KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
Happy 2026 Northwood families! It has been joyful to have students back in our hallways this week. We are excited to welcome our newly enrolled students and their families to the Northwood community. Our amazing staff welcomed students back with excitement, reviewed schedules, and jumped back into weekly routines. It was also great to see so many attend the All Pro Dad meeting this morning.
This is a reminder that the Georgia CCRPI survey window is open. This weekend it’s the parents who have homework….the survey won’t take too long but does serve as an important component of Northwood’s overall school score from the state. Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 will take the student version of the survey during school later this month. Northwood Elementary Family CCRPI Survey
Enjoy the weekend – maybe find time to snuggle up with good books while dodging raindrops and between watching the NCAA and NFL playoff football games.
Fondly,
Heather Rucker, principal
ESOL EXPLORERS
Happy New Year! We are excited for the second semester of this school year! Our ESOL students have had a great first semester making new friends, learning new vocabulary words, practicing phonics, as well as reading and comprehending both fiction and nonfiction texts. We are so proud of ALL of our multilingual students as they acquire more of the English language and grow as learners.
In the next week, our ESOL students will be preparing to take the yearly ESOL Assessment called ACCESS. The ACCESS test consists of four domains: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. For grades 1-5, each domain will be administered on a different day, and the students will take these assessments on their devices. For Kindergarten, the ACCESS test is given to each student individually. This ACCESS test will determine ESOL placement for the 2026-2027 school year. We look forward to having our students demonstrate their English proficiency and growth. Thank you for your continued support!
CLINIC NEWS AND NEEDS
CLOTHING DONATIONS
Accidents happen - in the classroom, at recess, at lunch or the bathroom. When our Explorers get messy they often head to the Clinic to get cleaned up. We keep extra clothes on hand for those quick changes. We appreciate donations of all clothing sizes, and are currently in need of girls bottoms - all sizes. If you have any clothing items you'd like to contribute you can send them in with your student or drop them off at the front desk. Thank you!
AVID GOAL OF THE WEEK
Northwood is proud to be an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school. AVID Elementary equips students with the foundational skills and mindset needed for future success. Our staff is focused on enhancing instructional consistency, fostering a college and career readiness mindset, increasing student engagement and building organizational and study skills.
As part of this, each week Northwood will be focused on one goal as a school. Be sure to ask your child about it!
Next week's AVID goal is: to continue to be cooperative with my classmates.
CAFETERIA NEWS
NEW CAFETERIA PRINCIPAL ACCOUNT FUND
This year, with the new lunch system, our school community has the capability to create a Cafeteria Principal Account Fund. This account would be used to fulfill any meal costs for students that reach an account balance of zero. We often have families and extended family members that ask if or how they can pay off lunch balances or support our students in this way, now the process of doing so is easy!
Should you be interested in adding to the Cafeteria Principal Account Fund, just send a check or cash to school in an envelope to Ms. Cristhal Austin, our cafeteria manager in training, and notate that the funds go to the Principal Fund. Please reach out to Ms. Austin, austinc4@fultonschools.org, if you have any questions.
