The 12 week report card has been given to students. Remember you can always find report cards on AERIES. If you don't know how to access them visit our Parent Center, where our wonderful staff will show you how! We have approximately 5 weeks left of school before we start Final Exams. It is an exciting time of the year as we start to wrap up all the joys and struggles of this school year. Our class of 2024 is also preparing for the culmination of their high school career and planning for the next part of their journey!

Attendance

As we gear up for the final stretch, we want to stress the importance of keeping up school attendance. Regular attendance plays a crucial role in your child's academic success, especially as we near the end of the school year.

Why School Attendance is Important:
Consistent attendance not only helps students stay on track with their learning but also significantly influences their overall academic performance. Being present in class allows students to actively engage with the material being taught, participate in discussions, and seek help when needed. By attending school regularly, students establish a routine that enhances their focus, comprehension, and retention of information.

School attendance is strongly correlated with good grades. Research shows that students who have high attendance rates tend to achieve higher grades compared to those with poor attendance records. Regularly attending school ensures that students have the opportunity to fully grasp concepts, complete assignments on time, and participate in assessments to showcase their knowledge and skills.

In April, we are excited to celebrate the 150th day of school with students who have maintained an attendance rate of 96% or higher. We are incredibly proud of their dedication and commitment to their education.

9th

The 9th-grade team is working on scheduling meetings with students who have received three or more failing grades and arranging parent conferences to discuss strategies for improvement. In addition, the team has been actively engaging with parents to encourage their children to attend tutoring sessions. Parents have been informed of the tutoring options available and have been advised that their children can now log in and out of the tutoring center. Furthermore, the team has been notifying parents via email if their child is receiving one or more failing grades. Parents have also been apprised of their child's academic performance, including earning a GPA of 4.0, 3.0, or higher, or a GPA of 2.0 or higher. These initiatives are intended to foster a culture of academic excellence and ensure that students receive the support they need to succeed. The 9th-grade team remains committed to helping students achieve their full potential and working collaboratively with parents to achieve this goal.

The 10th grade counselors are very proud of students who completed a Health or PE class during Spring Break at Assurance Learning. We had a total of 70 students complete either Health or PE! We are also excited for students taking advantage of Birmingham summer school. Classes are in Aeries and if a student needs to make up additional classes they will be referred to Assurance Learning Academy, email registrations will be sent in the next few weeks so please CHECK YOUR EMAILS.

11th Grade

Counselors met with all their students last month to discuss their graduation/A-G status and program for senior year. This summer is our last opportunity to make up credits before senior year. Therefore, any students who are not on track for graduation and/or A-G will need to attend summer school. The school year is coming to an end fast, it is important that all students pass their classes with Cs or above to ensure they are on track for graduation and four year universities. We are cheering you on!

12th Grade

Seniors are in the homestretch! Just 30 more days until graduation! Counselors have sent out notices through email and will soon be mailing letters home to notify parents if their student is in danger of not graduating due to grades from the 2nd progress report. If you receive the notice, please encourage your student to talk to their teachers and do what they can to improve their grades in the next month. Your student should also have been notified if they need to appeal to participate in the graduation ceremony due to attendance. As a reminder, appeals are due to Ms. Franco by May 10th!! LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. We're almost at the end! We believe in our seniors and are here to support them during their last month of high school!!

How Can PSW's Support My Student?

The Psychiatric Social Workers (PSW) support the social, emotional, behavioral and mental wellness of students by providing therapeutic support to children and families, crisis intervention and response, group facilitation, and connection to community resources while upholding the general promotion of mental wellness in the Birmingham community. Through these services, PSWs ensure that students are mentally, physically and emotionally present in the classroom. PSWs are also the advisors for the H.O.P.E. Club - Healing, Optimism, Perseverance, Empowerment and collaborate to spread awareness on Mental Health throughout school-wide campaigns.

Mental Health Resources/ Events Mental Health Resources/ Events

April - May

April: Date TBD. The H.O.P.E. Club (mental health club on campus) is collaborating with the Wellness Committee to host a healthy eating campaign. This year's topic is, “Healthy Foods, Healthy Minds.” The Wellness Committee along with the H.O.P.E. Club students and PSWs will pass out resources with tips on healthier food choices, post posters along campus and pass out healthy snacks from the school's cafeteria. The hope is to have students understand that the human guy serves as the “second brain” that affects not only digestion, but also mood, health, and thoughts.

May 1st: To kick off Mental Health Month, the PSWs will be presenting to 9th graders on identifying developmental needs and its connection to decision-making. The presentation will also offer information on tangible coping and problem-solving skills. Students will walk away from the presentation with an understanding of their relationship with mental health, tools for helpful decision-making, and resources to access further support.

May 11: Join us for the 3rd Annual Wellness Resource Fair happening on Saturday, May 11th from 11:00am-2:00pm! We are excited to bring together community resources, car show, art exhibits, free haircuts and thrifting boutique, performances and more in honor of Mental Health Month! The first 50 attendees will receive a FREE “Mental Health is Health” t-shirt! This event is free and open to the community! See you all there! See the flyer attached for more information!

May 22: PSWs will join EduCare on their Mental Health Day during student lunch to provide resources and engage them in activities that promote health and wellness! :)
