Technology Tips: The Anxious Generation

Many parents and educators are discussing the impact of phones and social media on children. One widely read book that has come up in discussions at school recently, The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, examines how the rise of smartphones and social media has reshaped childhood and contributed to increased anxiety and mental health challenges. Haidt emphasizes the importance of shared, community-wide norms rather than families feeling they must navigate these issues alone. He outlines four key norms: no smartphones before high school, no social media before age 16, phone-free schools, and more independent, free play for children.

Haidt and Catherine Price also recently released The Amazing Generation, a tween-friendly book designed to help kids think critically about screen use. Parents who would like to learn more can visit anxiousgeneration.com for short videos and resources, listen to a related podcast conversation with Dr. Becky Kennedy, or explore The Anxious Generation and The Amazing Generation books themselves.

Cub Scouts helping out FSS

The Bolton Cub Scout Pack 37 had the privilege of assisting Florence Sawyer School by respectfully retiring two American Flags that had flown proudly over the years and were ready for retirement. The Tiger Den carefully followed the proper protocol for flag disposal, which included cutting out the Union and separating each of the 13 stripes. Throughout the process, the Cub Scouts demonstrated the utmost respect and reverence, honoring the significance of the flag. In addition to the retirement ceremony, the Cub Scouts also learned how to properly fold an American Flag that is still in use. The Pack extends our sincere thanks to Principal Bates for providing our Cub Scouts with this valuable opportunity to learn and practice proper flag etiquette.

The Spring session of K-2 ASL Club will be starting on Tuesday, April 28th before school from 7:45-8:25. New members of the Club will learn the basics of ASL and returning students will be building on the skills they’ve learned previously. We will walk any second graders to the Sawyer Wing for the start of school. New permission slips are required for the Spring session if students participated in the Winter session.

We will meet students between 7:40-7:50 by the front door of the Emerson Wing every Tuesday morning of Club. If school is delayed or cancelled for the day, Club will not meet.

If your child would like to participate in the K-2 ASL Club, please complete the extracurricular permission slip and students may turn it into their homeroom teachers or in either office by Friday, April 18th. Please note that we are limited to 20 students.

If you have any questions, please contact Miss Richards (jrichards@nrsd.net) or Mrs. Scudiere (escudiere@nrsd.net).

Nashoba Athletics

We are excited to welcome you to the Nashoba Regional High School Interscholastic Athletics Program. Nashoba Athletics is rich in pride and tradition, and NRHS offers more than 50 teams across 26 different sports, providing students with a wide range of opportunities to get involved, compete, and represent their school community.

Athletics play an important role in the overall high school experience. Participation in sports helps students develop teamwork, leadership, resilience, and school pride while building meaningful connections with teammates and coaches. At Nashoba, we often refer to our community as “The Pack,” and being part of a team is a special way for students to contribute to that culture—supporting one another, working toward common goals, and representing the Pack with pride.

Participating in athletics at the high school level requires a greater level of commitment than club or recreational teams. Student-athletes are expected to attend all scheduled practices and competitions. Depending on the sport, weekend practices may also occur and should be anticipated. In addition, many teams practice and compete during school vacations and on certain holidays (such as Columbus Day and Veterans Day).

Prior to the start of each season, the high school hosts a preseason meeting for students and their parent(s)/guardian(s). These meetings provide an opportunity for coaches to share important information about their program, including team philosophy, expectations, schedules, communication, and other key details.

While the athletics office will send out season-specific information via email prior to each season, we wanted to share this overview in advance for all prospective incoming ninth-grade students and their families.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Tania Rich, Director of Athletics, at trich@nrsd.net or any of our head coaches.

Declaring Independence: Then & Now May 29

The Stow Historical Society will present "Declaring Independence: Then & Now" on Friday May 29th at 7 pm at Stow Town Hall. This is a public performance depicting how residents of communities in Massachusetts and New Hampshire debated the idea of declaring independence from Great Britain in 1776. The thought-provoking presentation explores what the Declaration of Independence meant to those who lived during the American Revolution and what it means to people today. The program is sponsored in conjunction with Freedom's Way National Heritage Area and will be followed by ice cream. Admission is free. Pre-registration is encouraged (so we know how much ice cream to buy!) at historystow@gmail.com. This event is made possible thanks to Freedom's Way National Heritage Area.
