Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 26th April 2024
Earth Day 2024
Year 5 - Earth Day
On Monday it was Earth Day and as part of Year 5's courageous advocacy work on 'Reuse, Reduce and Recycle' they planned lots of activities to highlight the importance of protecting our environment. It was great to see all the children and staff throughout school wearing the colours green, brown or blue to represent our world. As part of their work in DT, they spent the morning making carrot, blueberry, lemon and apple muffins to sell at the bake sale. Lots of the children also spent time at the weekend baking things at home to bring! At lunchtime many children in Key Stage 2 brought in packed lunches and took part in the Zero Waste Challenge. It was great to see so many lunches without any single use plastic. The staff in the canteen did a super job with school dinners too! Before the end of the school day the children held a clothes swap, swapping old items of clothing and accessories for new ones. Thank you so much for everyone's support throughout the day from those who baked, made packed lunches, brought in clothing to those who purchased items from the bake sale. The children made £89.62 and all the money made will be split and donated to the Salvation Army as well as going towards their class recommended reads. We will be ordering some books and delivering the money to the Salvation Army soon. On Wednesday a small group of Year 5's took all the remaining clothes from the clothes swap to the Salvation Army charity shop who were very grateful for our donations.
Year 6 Book Swap
As part of their courageous advocacy work on 'our world' and for Earth Day, Year 6 held a book swap to promote the need to recycle, share and swap preloved books in order to reduce the damage caused to animal habitats and homes. All the donated books were collected and grouped depending on difficulty and theme; this was a very time-consuming job. Isla and Bethany set up the book swap shop in the library during lunch and Ellie decorated the white boards ready. The book swap was a great success and Year 6 would like to thank everyone who took the time to help, swap or donate books. Thank you!
Colour Run
Sponsored Colour Run
In order to raise funds for school books the children have asked if they can do a colour run! This is quite an exciting activity and a great way to raise money to improve the quality and quantity of recommended reading books in each class. Holding a colour run does have some costs attached, therefore we wanted to share our ideas with parents and carers to see if people are aware of companies and businesses who may be willing to offer sponsorship for this activity. if you are aware of where we could potentially seek sponsorship or if you are willing to sponsor the event please do contact school on admin@riponcathedral.n-yorks.sch.uk
Thanks
St Wilfrid at Ripon Cathedral
This week the children in Year 2 ventured up to the Cathedral to learn more about St Wilfrid and his connection with the Cathedral and our city. Canon Matthew told the children about the life of St Wilfrid and took them into St Wilfrid’s underground Anglo-Saxon crypt from 672AD, the oldest built structure in any English cathedral.
Exploring Shadows
Nursery children took the opportunity to make the most of the sunshine by drawing around shadows using chalks and dinosaurs!
School Updates
Parking Around School
Please can we take this opportunity to remind all parents to park safely and with consideration for residents and pedestrians before and after school. The zig zag lines have been replaced outside school so we do recommend that parents and carers do obtain a permit from school to park in St Marygate car park (contact rbingham@riponcathedral.n-yorks.sch.uk).
Year 6 Leavers Event
We wanted to let parents and carers in Year 6 know we have had to change the date of our Year 6 Leavers Event to Thursday 11th July at 6.00pm. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Jewellery in School
It is school policy that children do not wear jewellery in school. This includes necklaces and bracelets. When there are instances that children are in non-uniform we do ask that the school policy continues to be followed, with no jewellery worn.
Children are allowed to wear earrings, however these should be stud earrings. Earrings must be removed for physical education sessions. Our uniform policy does state that earrings should be covered if they cannot be taken out. As we are updating this document, we have taken health and safety advice as the taping of jewellery can create a perception of safety and is not a satisfactory approach. Tape can often fall off and does not reduce the risk of compression injury.
Therefore for health and safety reasons we are taking the approach that all jewellery must be removed for physical education lessons. We recommend where children are unable to remove earrings that they are not worn to school on PE days. If children do have earrings in that they cannot remove, for their safety and the safety of others, they will not be allowed to participate in PE lessons. We will transition to this approach over the next six weeks to ensure those with earrings have time to know updated health and safety advice and learn how to take out earrings themselves. We do advise that if you would like your child to have their ears pierced, you do it at the start of the summer holidays. Thank you for your understanding and support.
