Excerpt Party

Eighth-grade students kicked off their year with a narrative writing unit. Their first assignment was to write a personal narrative. Students chose a meaningful event- something that impacted who they are as a person- and ultimately, helped classmates to get to know them better. Then, students chose an excerpt, or small piece of their writing, they were comfortable sharing with their peers. As students read their excerpts, the audience determined whether they would sign them as an author based on their shared excerpt and why. At the end, students who were signed received a certificate and feedback.

The excerpt party (complete with snacks and treats) is a way for others to hear their stories and learn from them. Students may learn something new about their classmates, and walk away feeling more connected to each other.

From Bubbles to Bar Graphs

Seventh-grade students in Mrs. Harrison’s Life Science and Advanced Life Science classes recently conducted hands-on labs to strengthen their measurement, data collection, and graphing skills. Using a container of liquid soap solution and a straw, each student blew bubbles and recorded the diameters in a data table. They experimented with different techniques to create the largest bubble possible, then analyzed their results to determine the best type of graph to illustrate their findings.

Making Numbers Make Sense

First graders are building a strong foundation in place value by using hands-on manipulatives to represent numbers with tens and ones. Through activities with base-ten blocks, linking cubes, and place value mats, students are learning how to group ones into tens and see how numbers are composed and decomposed. This hands-on practice helps them visualize and understand the structure of our number system, making abstract math concepts concrete and meaningful.

The Whit is Underway!

With the trees cleared and heavy machinery on site, the grading and piping of our newest athletic facility is underway. GWA alum Jackson Rutledge GWA ('24) with Benchmark is leading this portion of the project and looks to have the site ready for the build by mid-Oct. The facility will include restrooms, concessions, tennis courts and storage - all made possible by the generous contributions to our Go Beyond campaign!

Mandatory Meeting for Juniors

The College Counseling Office will be hosting a mandatory College Preparation Meeting in the cafeteria on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m. The meeting will end no later than 7 p.m. We ask that every junior and at least one parent be in attendance. We will review college admission guidelines, timelines, testing, the application process, and much more to make sure your family is completely informed and prepared for the upcoming college application process.

If you have conflicts, questions, or concerns, please let us know. This was the only day this month with minimal athletic or band competitions scheduled. Snacks will be provided.

We look forward to meeting with everyone. Have a great week!
