The Order of Australia Association NSW Branch 2026 Youth Community Service Award

We are incredibly proud of Year 11 student Marlon Rowe, who has been recognised with the Order of Australia Association NSW Branch 2026 Youth Community Service Award at Government House for his outstanding leadership and commitment to serving others.

Marlon has made a significant contribution both within Bulli High School and across the wider community. He has served for three years on the Student Representative Council and is a valued mentor to younger students. He has also demonstrated initiative and leadership through environmental projects, including co-leading a World Soil Day initiative, working collaboratively with students from our Autism Unit and Wollongong City Council to promote sustainability, inclusion and community connection.

Beyond school, Marlon volunteers with the Austinmer Rural Fire Service and Austinmer Surf Life Saving Club, where he supports Nippers and promotes water safety. He has also contributed to community welfare programs supporting families experiencing hardship and regularly participates in ANZAC Day commemorations.

Marlon’s leadership and service have been further recognised through the Australian Defence Force Long Tan Award. His work experience at NSW Parliament and participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award have also provided valuable opportunities to develop his civic leadership, resilience and teamwork.

What is particularly impressive is the sincerity and humility with which Marlon approaches his service. He consistently demonstrates kindness, initiative, collaboration and a genuine desire to make a positive difference.

We are immensely proud of Marlon and congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition. He is a wonderful role model for our students and an inspiring example of the positive contribution young people can make to their communities.

Congratulations, Marlon!

Drawn Together Exhibition

It was lovely to see parents and members of our community come through the Drawn Together exhibition on Friday evening and throughout the weekend.

This special exhibition brought together students at opposite ends of their schooling journey — our Year 10 students and Kindergarten students from Stanwell Park Public School — who worked together to create a shared artwork. The project was a wonderful example of how art can connect generations of learners and build relationships across our community.

It was particularly special to have the students meet each other at the exhibition on Friday and experience the finished work together. The pride and excitement they shared was a wonderful reflection of the collaborative spirit behind the project.

A sincere thank you to the Clifton School of Arts for supporting and providing the space for this wonderful exhibition, and to everyone who contributed to making Drawn Together such a memorable experience.

Year 9 2027 Subject Selections

Year 9 2027 Subject Selections are now open.

Students have received an email to their school email address with information and instructions on how to complete their selections. All subject information is also available through the Year 8 Wellbeing Google Classroom and on the school website.

Important: Subject selection is not first in, best dressed. Students should carefully consider their options and select subjects in their order of preference.

Selections will close at 11.59pm tomorrow, Friday 28 August 2026.

We encourage parents and carers to take some time to discuss the available options with their child and support them in making informed decisions about their Year 9 studies.

Big Picture Learning Academy 2027 Applications

The first round of applications for the Bulli High School Big Picture Learning Academy (BPLA) are closing soon. The program will launch in 2027 and is open to current Year 8 and Year 9 students.

The BPLA is designed around each student’s individual interests, strengths and goals, with a focus on authentic, real-world learning. Students will undertake internships, develop a Personal Learning Plan in partnership with an Advisory Teacher, and participate in regular Exhibitions to share and reflect on their learning and growth.

Places in the founding cohort are limited.

If your child is interested in applying, please complete the Expression of Interest form and return it to the Front Office by 4.00pm this Friday.

Please note: Applications must be handwritten.

Arts Masterclass

Yesterday, Year 4 and 5 students from our Seacliff Community of Schools completed their final Arts Masterclass as part of the High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) Program, with a focus on the Creative Domain. The final session featured an engaging Visual Arts masterclass led by Ms Scott and Ms Moran.

The students explored the work of renowned artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, drawing inspiration from his distinctive style to create their own artworks. They demonstrated creativity, curiosity and a thoughtful approach to developing and refining their ideas, with many producing truly impressive pieces.

It was wonderful to see the students so engaged in the creative process throughout the program. We look forward to seeing how they continue to develop their talents and the wonderful work they will produce in the future.

Southern Stars

I look forward to seeing our talented student dancers take to the stage at Southern Stars over the weekend at WIN Stadium.

A special thank you to Ms Merola for her dedication in encouraging, supporting and inspiring our students throughout their preparation. Her commitment, together with the hard work and enthusiasm of our dancers, is helping to make this a wonderful opportunity for them.

We wish all our students the very best for their performances and look forward to celebrating their achievements at Southern Stars!

HSC Art Exhibition & P&C Meeting

Next Tuesday evening, we invite our school community to join us for the HSC Visual Arts Exhibition, from 6.00–7.30pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the creativity, talent and hard work of our HSC Visual Arts students and to view the impressive artworks they have developed throughout the course. This is an evening not to be missed!

Our P&C Meeting will then be held on Wednesday evening at 6.00pm. We encourage parents and carers to come along, connect with other members of our school community and contribute to discussions about our school.

Mrs Denise James

Principal

Acknowledgement of Country Acknowledgement of Country

We would like to acknowledge country and the traditional custodians of this land who are the Wodi Wodi people of the Five Islands Dreaming, Dharawal Country and the Yuin nation.

We would like to acknowledge the country on which we meet and gather, near Sandon Point, the declared Aboriginal land rich in Aboriginal history and culture.

We thank the ancestors and Elders for passing down their knowledge of country and traditions which is the reason that Aboriginal culture thrives today.

At Bulli High School, it is our responsibility to preserve and respect the integrity of this significant site for future generations.

Wellbeing

Starting in Week 6, selected students across Stages 4, 5, and 6 will have the opportunity to participate in the Warhammer Alliance program, running twice each term.

Operated by Games Workshop as a free educational and enrichment initiative, Warhammer Alliance supports schools in running structured, engaging extracurricular clubs for students aged 12 to 18.

Moving beyond traditional sports or academic formats, the program uses tabletop gaming—encompassing miniature assembly, painting, narrative writing, and strategic play—to promote student wellbeing, social connection, and multidisciplinary skill development.

Key Program Highlights & Student Benefits

  • Inclusive Community & Social Connection: Offers a welcoming environment for students to build meaningful friendships and collaborate on creative projects alongside peers with shared interests.

  • Hands-On Craftsmanship & Focus: Model building and painting develop fine-motor precision while providing a screen-free, mindful space that fosters concentration and patience.

  • Cross-Curricular Learning:

    • STEM & Engineering: Applies practical spatial reasoning, geometry, probability, and scale assembly.

    • Literacy & Creative Arts: Encourages creative writing, world-building, color theory, and rule interpretation.

    • Strategic & Critical Thinking: Enhances tactical planning, resource management, and fair-play negotiation.

We look forward to seeing our students develop these valuable skills while engaging in a rewarding and creative hobby!

RU OK? Day — Thursday 10 September

Adolescence is when most lifelong mental health difficulties first appear, and teenagers are far more likely to turn to a friend or family member than to a professional.

That's what makes R U OK? Day matter for young people: it isn't about having the perfect words, it's about normalising the question so that asking — and answering honestly — feels ordinary rather than dramatic.

Our students will take part in activities at school but the conversations that count most happen at home and playground.

Five ways to ask your teen about their mental health each day

1. Ask side-by-side, not face-to-face. In the car, walking the dog, doing dishes. Teens open up more when they don't have to hold eye contact.

2. Be specific. "How was your day?" gets "fine." Try "What was the best and worst bit of today?"

3. Ask twice. If the first answer is a shrug, come back gently later: "You seemed a bit flat earlier — everything okay?"

4. Listen without fixing. Resist advice for the first few minutes. "That sounds really frustrating" keeps them talking; "you should just…" ends it.

5. Check back in. Ask again in a few days about something they told you. It shows you were actually listening.

In the classroom: mindfulness and gratitude at the beach

Some of our Year 9 PDHPE students recently took their Kindness, Mindfulness & Gratitude lesson out of the classroom and down to the beach.

Students completed a barefoot sensory grounding walk — deliberately noticing the sand underfoot, the salt air and the sound of the water — before forming a gratitude circle and writing what they were thankful for in the sand.

Simple practices, but the research behind them is strong:

regular gratitude and mindfulness are linked to lower anxiety, better sleep and greater resilience.

Wear It Purple Day — Friday 28 August

This Friday, students and staff are invited to wear something purple. Wear It Purple began in 2010 after a string of deaths of young people who had been bullied because of their sexuality or gender identity, and its message has stayed the same ever since: every young person has the right to be proud of who they are.

This year's theme is "Colours of Courage" — a reminder that courage usually isn't a grand gesture. It's the small, everyday choice to be yourself, and to make room for someone else to do the same.

For young people who are questioning or who already know who they are, a day like this does something specific: it tells them, before they ever have to ask, that this school is a place where they'll be safe.

And for everyone else, it's an invitation to be the kind of friend who makes that true.

Skittles: our LGBTQI+ student group

Support at our school isn't limited to one day a year. Skittles is a monthly lunchtime group for LGBTQI+ students and their friends and allies, run by our Year 8 Year Adviser Ms Payne.

It's a relaxed space — food, games, conversation, and the simple experience of being around people who get it.

Students don't need to label themselves, tell anyone why they're coming, or commit to attending every month. They can just turn up. Allies are genuinely welcome; some of our most valued members are there to support a mate.

Skittles meets on the last Friday of each month in Science Lab 1. For more information, students or parents can contact Ms Payne or Head Teacher Wellbeing, Mr Hickey

If your child mentions Skittles at home, the most useful response is usually the simplest one: interest, not interrogation.

Support That Doesn't Clock Off: The BHS Online Wellbeing Hub

Our wellbeing team is available every school day — but distress doesn't keep school hours.

The Bulli High School Online Wellbeing Hub exists so that students have somewhere reliable to go at 11pm on a Sunday, not just at recess on a Tuesday.

Just as importantly, it's built to develop independence.

One of the strongest predictors of good long-term mental health in young people is help-seeking skill: knowing what you're feeling, knowing where to look, and being willing to reach out. The Hub gives students a place to practise that themselves, rather than always relying on an adult to find the right door.

What's on the Hub

· Support teams — who our Wellbeing and Learning Support teams are, and how to reach them

· Topic-by-topic guidance — anxiety, depression, self-harm, friendships, family, grief, body image, social media safety, school refusal and vaping

· Targeted support — gender and sexuality, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, young carers, students in unsafe home situations, and learning adjustments

· Practical tools — recommended mental health apps, links to 24/7 online counselling services, chill-out and stress-management strategies, and "The Frog" local support directory

· A parent and carer section — worth a look yourselves

Year 9 will be putting it to the test

As part of their Year 9 mental health unit, every Year 9 student will review and evaluate the Hub: navigating it, assessing whether the information is credible, accessible and actually useful to someone their age, and identifying what's missing.

This is core PDHPE work — critically evaluating health information and services is a skill students will use for the rest of their lives.

It also means the Hub gets improved by the people it's for.

We'll act on what they tell us.

Have a look with your child: BHS Online Wellbeing Hub

Farewelling Year 12

At the end of this term, our Year 12 students will graduate.

Everything in this newsletter, from asking a mate if they're okay, to a gratitude circle on the sand, to the hard conversations about respect, points at the same thing: we are not only trying to send good students out the gate, we are trying to send good humans.

Our Year 12s have grown into exactly that kind of group, and we could not be prouder of them. To the families, thank you for trusting us with your kids and we look forward to celebrating with you in the coming weeks.

15s Boys Basketball

Congratulations to our 15s Boys Basketball team, with 4 wins today at the South Coast Regionals & now progressing through to the State Top 20, with wins against Nowra (78-19), Goulburn (47-35), Eden Marine (46-25) & Smiths Hill in the final (76-27)

After a slow start against Nowra, once we shook off the early morning cobwebs & the engine started purring, it was one way traffic as we zoomed away with a 59 point win to open the day & every player getting on the scoresheet.

Game 2 against the Highlands Region Champs was perhaps our toughest test of the day as Goulburn really made us earn every bucket.

Our defence was phenomenal, with C Moses an absolute menace guarding the ball, but Matty 'The Chef" Drinks Water was raining them down from downtime with FOUR huge triples to open up the lead.

Game 3 saw us face off against the Eurobodalla champions & they had some offensive weaponary that we struggled to contain early, before the big bodied walls of Henry, Heartbreaker & Quinn started to muscle up the keyway & we ran away with the 21 point win.

In the final game of the day against the unbeaten Smiths Hill side, it was win & progress or lose & season over & our boys were primed for the occasion.

We came out possessed & with lock down D up the floor & at the rim, within minutes we had a 20 point lead & it was 30 by the half!

The relentless efforts didn't stop there as our D kept turning up & we ran away with a 49 point win.

Trey turned it on with 23 for the game, Quinn was enormous on D AND dropped 18 & Felix rounded our our top scorers with 10, but it was all about the collective D. Mitch kept putting a wall in front of the ball (& may have shot 100% for the day in a super efficient day out), the Heartbreaker was breaking hearts & chests with his physicality, Matty & Trey doubled the ball relentlessly, Felix was picking off passes left, right & center & Chase was the maestro behind it all marshalling his troopers from the back. Then there was C Moses (AKA 'the Guard's Nightmare') who wore the opposition PGs like a tight glove all day & gave them zero room to move.

Now whilst our 'veteran' 14 & 15 year old stars got most of the props, massive shout outs have to go to our younger & rookie crew. MJ has risen up the ranks & can proudly boast to having an unbeaten record playing D1 for his school.

The Heff (despite being in YEAR 7) was trusty & reliable running the point in his stints, showing leadership beyond his years. & Manu & Henry in Year 8 also flexed their muscles guarding bigger opposition & with the rebounding efforts around the paint.

Our depth & commitment is what makes us such a tough team to play & then you add in our extended squad & support crew & they fulfil the final piece of the puzzle.

Huds & Carter were excellent scorekeepers, Stampy was great with the running stats & media duties, Max earned his stripes as an official & Peralta cheered his heart out from the sidelines still resting from the plates & screws in his wrist & itching to get back on court for some action.

Onto the State Top 20 we go!

Thanks of course to the parent group for all the support, transport & communications. We couldn't do it without you.

Credit & thank you to Louisa Kirby & Anna Davids.

Help Honour the Legacy of Bulli High School

As Bulli High School celebrates its 70th year, we are proud to launch a lasting project to permanently name selected school buildings and significant spaces in honour of individuals whose legacy continues to inspire future generations.

This project recognises outstanding staff, alumni and community members whose service, leadership, achievements and enduring commitment have made a lasting impact on Bulli High School.

Honouring those who have shaped our school is already part of our history. Our gymnasium proudly bears the name Kerryn McCann Gymnasium, recognising Bulli High School alumna Kerryn McCann – a three-time Olympian and two-time Commonwealth Games marathon gold medallist - whose courage, humility and sporting achievements continue to inspire our community.

Now, as we celebrate 70 years of Bulli High School, we have the opportunity to recognise more of the remarkable people whose contributions have helped shape our school's story.

We invite students, staff, alumni and members of our wider community to nominate individuals they believe deserve this lasting recognition.

Complete a nomination using the link below:

https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/QnnAc1QeNW

Together, let's honour the people who have shaped Bulli High School's proud history and ensure their legacy continues to inspire generations to come.
