6th Grade Science- Ecosystems

In science, our 6th graders are exploring ecosystems through the story of New York Harbor. Students are learning about food webs, energy transfer, organism interactions, biodiversity, and how changes in an environment can affect entire populations. We are also investigating the history of the harbor, the impact of pollution, and the important role oysters play in improving water quality and providing habitat.

7th Grade Science: Density and Properties of Matter

In this unit, students are investigating the physical properties of matter—such as density—and how these properties help us classify and identify different substances. Through hands-on experiments and modeling activities, students explore how matter behaves at the particle level and look for patterns to make predictions. They will use scientific tools to measure and analyze various materials, deepening their understanding of structure and function. By the end of the unit, students will be able to use evidence to explain why density is a key property in identifying matter. This unit builds critical thinking and scientific reasoning skills.

8th Grade Biology: Homeostasis Unit

In this unit, students are exploring how the human body maintains internal balance, or homeostasis, through complex interactions between body systems. They are learning how feedback mechanisms help the body respond to changes in the environment, both inside and out. Key concepts include thermoregulation (how we maintain body temperature) and blood sugar regulation. Through hands-on activities, discussions, and investigations, students are discovering how the body works to stay stable and healthy. By the end of the unit, they will understand how our body systems work together to keep us in balance—even when the world around us changes.
