They were going dotty at Stevens on the last day of school
The last day of school at Stevens Elementary School on June 10 included a glimpse into the future for students, families and staff. Architects were on hand with conceptual drawings, including playground options, for the future new school in South Aberdeen.
The students pictured above are using stickers to pick their favorite playground layouts and playground toys for the new school.
The district has received funding through the state's Seismis Safe Schools grant program to design a new elementary school for South Aberdeen to be located out of the tsunami zone. The district has purchased property off of Lomax Street abutting the border with Cosmopolis. Once designed, the district will be in line for construction funding from the Legislature.
The design for a new Harbor Learning Center is completed and the project awaits state funding -- hopefully in the next budget cycle. It will be located on the grassy field near Aberdeen High School between 4th and 5th Streets.
The photos below show the conceptual drawings for the new grade school in South Aberdeen that were on display the last day of school.
Strong showing for SkillsUSA teams at nationals
Aberdeen High School and Miller Junior High School students came away with honors in several different events – including two Top 10 finishers – at the 2026 SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference last week in Atlanta, Georgia.
Miller Junior High’s Mariana Valerio Souza placed ninth in Middle School Extemporaneous Speaking, while the team of Allison Benson, Jese Rodriguez Garcia, and Sophia Norsby placed eighth in the Middle School Team Engineering Challenge.
AHS Freshman Emily Dominguez placed 16th in Prepared Speech and Jaycee Kost, also a freshman, placed 13th in Extemporaneous Speaking.
Advisors for the Middle School SkillsUSA are Janet Dayton, Rob Burns and Hailey Pfeifer.
Aberdeen High School SkillsUSA Advisors are Chuck Veloni, Cory Martinsen, Travis Wheeler, Cordell Trusty, and Ashley Emmett.
“Both the Aberdeen High School and Miller Junior High School’s SkillsUSA Clubs would like to thank everyone who helped and supported these individuals as they represented Grays Harbor on a national level and as they achieved success in Atlanta,” Mrs. Emmett said.
Talking shop at Robert Gray
Students in Melissa Fritts’ and Denise Roberts’ 3rd Grade classes at Robert Gray Elementary School recently spent time in Business School – a unit on economics and business that the teachers designed.
“Students learned about supply and demand, profit and loss and scarcity,” Mrs. Fritts said. They created a business plan, crafted their products, learned about customer service and advertised to the first and second graders. Then, on June 4, it was Market Day.
“It was fabulous,” Ms. Roberts said. “The students learned so much and had a blast!”
“They had a great time shopping and our students had to learn about making change,” Mrs. Fritts added. “It was so much fun and we hope to make it a tradition.”

Family Access to Skyward will pause on June 15
The district is migrating to an updated version of Skyward called QMLATIV -- or just Q, for short -- which will require suspending access to the system while data is transferred. This pause will begin on Monday, June 15. We should be back up again by Monday, July 6, and hopefully sooner.
We hope these updates improve your Skyward experience. We will be sharing tips and tricks when school offices reopen for the 2026-2027 school year. Have a great summer!
