ββHUGE Attendance Shout Out to our STUDENTS and FAMILIES! ββ
πββOur overall, September Average Daily Attendance was 94.20%!ββ
That is INCREDIBLE! Every grade level exceeded the MSDE Attendance goal of 94%. We are so proud of each and every member of our school community!
βπGrade 1 is the September Monthly Attendance Winnerπβ
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about schoolβand themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and college.
Did you know? π
- Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month in a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just 1 or 2 days every few weeks.
- Being late to school may lead to poor attendance
Strategies for Success π
- Monitor your childβs attendance and contact the teacher to address any concerns.
- Post the school calendar on your refrigerator.
- Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up.
- Call on a family member, a neighbor or another parent to support you and your student.
- Ask for help when you need it. School staff, after-school program providers, and other parents or community agencies are available to help families and address other experiences that make it difficult to attend and participate.
- Schedule medical appointments and extended trips when school isn't in session.

Volunteers: Gift of our Community!
Baltimore County Public Schools encourages and welcomes school volunteers. The academic achievement and educational experiences of all students are enhanced by a community invested in their learning. We invite parents, families, and community members to engage in volunteer activities in our schools from Kindergarten to high school and become partners in teaching and learning. Volunteers serve in a variety of roles, based on each school's needs.
Visit the BCPS Volunteer website to complete the application and training. If you have any questions, please contact our CARE Liaison, Chrissy Forsythe at 443-809-7500 or cforsythe2@bcps.org

A Message from our School Counselor, Mrs. Westdorp
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As part of our School Counseling Program, your childβs class will have the opportunity to engage in monthly counseling lessons throughout the school year. In the month of October, students will discuss the topic of bullying prevention. These lessons help students understand what bullying is, how it can affect others, andβmost importantlyβhow they can stand up for themselves and support their classmates in positive ways. Below is the list of books/resources used in each lesson.
- Pre-Kindergarten: The Way I Feel by Janan Cain
- Kindergarten: Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns About Bullying by Howard Binkow
- 1st grade: Have You Filled a Bucket Today by Carol McCloud
- 2nd grade: I Walk With Vanessa by Kerascoet
- 3rd grade: One by Kathryn Otoshi
- 4th grade: Simon's Hook by Karen Gedig Burnett
- 5th grade: My Secret Bully by Trudy Ludwig
The goal of the monthly core curriculum counseling lessons is to help promote the social emotional, academic, and career development of our students. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about the program. I can be reached via phone at 443-809-5745 or via email at KWestdorp@bcps.org.
Respectfully,
Kristen Westdorp
