The SHARK Alert Chatham Elementary School Community Update

August 1st Update

Dear CES SHARKS & Friends,

I hope you have been enjoying the summer break! Here at Chatham Elementary School we have been busy preparing for the upcoming school year. Our custodial team has been deep cleaning and moving classrooms, our administrative team has been processing orders, and our teachers have begun to arrive and start setting up their classrooms. We are eagerly anticipating the start of the school year and welcoming our Grade 1-4 students back on Tuesday, September 3rd. Kindergarten students begin on Thursday, September 5th, and our Pre-Kindergarten students begin on Monday, September 9th.

Each summer our school welcomes new staff members and wishes a fond farewell to others. After the end of the school year, two beloved CES teachers made the difficult decision to move on from our school. First-grade teacher, Mrs. Sandy Hanson made the difficult decision to retire and second-grade teacher, Ms. Allie Howell and her fiancé also made the difficult decision to relocate off-Cape. We wish both Mrs. Hanson and Ms. Howell much success and love in their new adventures. They will be missed!

As difficult as it is to say goodbye, I am thrilled to announce the newest staff members to CES. These dedicated and enthusiastic educators will be an incredible addition to our SHARKS family. Please join me in welcoming them to the CES community.

Grade 1 Teacher - Mrs. Caitlin Imparato (formerly CES K-1 Specialist)

Grade 2 Teacher - Mrs. Emily Tuccio (formerly HES 3rd Grade Teacher)

K-1 Specialist - Ms. Sue Linnell (long time CES Instructional Assistant & Teacher)

SEAL Special Education Teacher - Ms. Katie Ganshaw (former HES Teacher & MRSD graduate)

We have also added several new Instructional Assistants, please join me in welcoming:

Mrs. Barbara Olsen - PreK

Mrs. Brennan Finnegan

Ms. Hannah Jerauld

CES is still hiring for one additional Instructional Assistant, so please check out schoolspring.com and apply if interested in this incredibly important role in our school.

Please make sure to pencil our annual Ice Cream Social on your calendars. The Ice Cream Social takes place on Wednesday, August 28th at 6:00 pm. Students and families are invited to catch up after the summer break, meet teachers and classmates, and enjoy a sweet treat. This is also the time for our new Kindergarten students to join me on a quick bus ride through the town of Chatham where we go over bus expectations. The bus ride is from 6:00-6:15 pm.

Please enjoy the remaining weeks of vacation. If you have any questions or concerns, the Main Office is open Tuesday-Thursday until August 15th and Monday-Friday beginning August 19th. We are counting the days until we are all back together again!

Warm regards,

Dr. Kelly

CES Wins Best Civic Float in 4th of July Parade

The 2024 Chatham 4th of July Parade's theme was "Chatham....It's a Shore Thing" and Chatham Elementary won the award for best Civic Float with our entry "Success at CES...It's a Shore Thing!" Our CES representatives had a blast blowing bubbles, handing out candy, and singing our school song for the thousands of spectators at this year's parade. We look forward to making our participation in the annual parade a new tradition at CES. Thank you to all who participated and came out to wish us well!

Practice Math & Reading - Win Prizes!!

This summer, returning CES students have the opportunity to increase their learning and win some cool prizes. Let's beat the summer slide and come back to school in September ready to hit the ground running.

At CES, we would like to ensure that our students are as successful as possible. We can combat the dreaded summer slide with short, but consistent practice (20-30 minutes, 3-5 times a week). Our incredible interventionists have put together a menu of activities for students in Grades K-3. Please visit the links below for games, activities, books, and suggestions on how to practice those important academic skills this summer.

Grade K-3 students will receive a copy of a Summer of Learning calendar with their report cards. For this challenge, students are asked to record math and reading practice in 15-minute increments. For each day your SHARK completes 15 minutes of math practice, place an "M" on the calendar day. The same goes for reading, for every 15 minutes of reading practice, place an "R" on the calendar day. Students who log at least 6 hours of practice this summer will be eligible for a wide range of prizes and invited to a special breakfast in September.

Reading Suggestions & Links

"Summer slide" is a phrase coined by educators and researchers to explain the loss of learning that takes places over the summer vacation months. Here are some statistics about summer slide:

  • Kids in grades 3 to 5 lose about 20% of their school year gains in reading and 27% of their gains in math. (Source: Scholastic)
  • Students lose about a month’s worth of learning on average over the summer. (Source: Sage Journals)
  • The more kids learn during the school year, the more they’re likely to lose over the summer. (Source: Kappan)

So let's keep those skills sharp and log those minutes of practice this summer. We can't wait to see our SHARKS' completed calendars and celebrate their summer SUCCESS in September!!
