Stockwell Priorities
- To ensure our children are happy and we explain things well
- To ensure no child leaves our school unable to read
- To ensure children learn a broad vocabulary to access the world around them
- To enhance the educational experiences of diagnosed and undiagnosed children with SEND
It was a short, but jam-packed half term. I can't quite believe that there are only 7 and a half weeks left of this school year. As we head into the final term of this school year, I can't help but to reflect on the children's achievements academically, and in other fields. They remind me each day how proud I am to be their Head of School.
Thank you to the parents and carers that spearheaded the event, organising the raffle, rallying troops to help with food and decorations, writing scripts and making sure that everything went off without a hitch. Thank you also to Mrs Saloojee and Mr Serra for their efforts in making sure that the children were ready to perform in the assembly.
Events like this remind us how important it is to build bridges, celebrate one another, and share our experiences as a community. We are more than just a school—we are a family—and when we come together in this way, we grow stronger, more understanding, and more united.
We work closely with a number of schools through the Brixton Learning Collaborative. This cluster of schools comes together to provide CPD opportunities for staff, and both curricular and extra-curricular activities for pupils. Last half term, the children took part in a Pupil Wellbeing Ambassadors workshop. The children came together for a creative workshop day hosted here at Stockwell and thought about the question ‘How do we make a well world?’ They took part in drama activities, made a quilt of ideas and drawings and worked with Aga from Pegasus Opera to compose two songs.
The Ambassadors took away lots of ideas and tips for supporting Wellbeing activities back in their own school. It was lovely to see how well all the children got on together with lots of new friendships made during the day.
We are looking forward to celebrating male role models in our community on our first Father Figure Friday. We are planning an afternoon of activity and community.
- Dads, uncles, granddads, big brothers and male carers aged between 18 - 70,
- of all backgrounds, identities and faiths.
- Children aged between 4 - 11 of all backgrounds, identities and faiths.
Please register your interest in joining us using the link below: Father Figure Friday
A number of parents have commented that children other than their own have been riding on scooters around the school playground after they have been collected by parents. Please ensure that you supervise your children carefully after collection so that property is not damaged or lost.
If you are bringing your child's scooter or bike to school, please ensure that this is clearly named.
This is a gentle reminder that we do not have the capacity to cut up and give out whole cakes. If you wish for the class to share some cake for your child's birthday, please ensure that this is in the form of individual cakes such as cupcakes, or that the cake comes in already cut up.
There is lots happening this term, with lots of events for parents and the community. We are looking forward to welcoming you onsite. Don't forget to let us know if you can lend a hand - we are always looking for additional support.
Don't forget to join us for our Portuguese Celebration, Father Figure Friday, Enterprise Marketplace and Sports Days, which are coming up in the next few weeks.
Have a wonderful week - here's to a fantastic half term.
Sports Update
On Wednesday 30th of April, Stockwell attended our last league matches of the season with high hopes of securing a top 7 finish. However, in order to do so, Stockwell A would have had to beat 3 teams. First up was Stockwell Vs Van Gogh. The game started very tightly. However, Luay opened up the scoring with a wonder goal; we kept creating chances and scoring with Tariq, our captain, leading from the front. The day felt like a passing of the torch moment as Maher scored a thunderbolt goal to increase our lead to 3-0.
We moved on to a more feisty game between Stockwell and Sudbourne. The Stockwell A team brought the heat this game as last week, Sudbourne finished ahead, 2-1 winners against Stockwell Bs. Alexander was sensational as he scored two belters to put us 2-0 in the lead, with Luay tripling his goal count on the day. The match ended Stockwell 4, Sudbourne 0.
Finally it was time for the Stockwell Derby where Tariq, in his last league game for the school team, scored the only goal of the game with a screamer. The last game of the season meant individual awards, with Stockwell As finishing up in 7th and Stockwell Bs finishing up in 14th.
Player of the season Stockwell As: Tariq 6K
Player of the season Stockwell Bs: Aleandro 6A
Mr Osman - Sports Coach
The girls’ football league has now finished, and what a fantastic first season it has been! A huge well done to our brilliant Year 6 players — you’ve made amazing progress, shown great teamwork, and we’ll be sad to see you go. Siena was the standout performer scoring most of our goals. Big mentions also go to Jaelyn for always being at training and never stopping running, and Shersy for making some important saves. We hope you continue playing and enjoying football in the future! Looking ahead, some eager Year 4s have now joined the team to start preparing for next season, and they’re already showing great potential.
If any children are interested in joining the team or improving their skills, we encourage them to make the most of opportunities to practise at lunchtime. Anyone keen to be considered for the team should speak to Mr Hirsch or Mr Osman.

Subject Spotlight - Spanish
At Stockwell, Spanish is taught as a discrete subject. Each class has a weekly timetabled slot with our specialist Spanish tutor who delivers a bespoke language curriculum to the children. Our language curriculum is designed to develop the skills of the children and repetition is planned for in order to support with language acquisition.
The children begin their journey as language learners in Nursery and this journey continues up to Year 6. They begin by learning Spanish in a fun and engaging way, through songs and games. This continues to be developed and by the time they reach Year 6, they are using their knowledge to speak and write in sentences with a focus on grammar.
At Stockwell, we feel it is important to create opportunities to learn about the culture of Spanish speaking countries and by writing letters to children in Spain, we can learn about the similarities and differences in the world around them. We also feel it is important to monitor the progress made by the children. We have created an assessment tool in order to assess the language skills acquired by the children, we use this to inform our planning and to ensure that the children are successful language learners.
Additionally, we feel it is important to celebrate the languages in our communities and as such, we have a Language of the Month. This provides the children with information about different countries around the world as well as learning greetings that we then use to take the register. This month's language is Slovakian. Do you know where in the world Slovakian is spoken? Do you know how to greet people in Slovakian?

A Whole School Approach to Anti Bullying and Online Safety
With its limitless opportunities for building, exploring and collaborating, Minecraft remains a global gaming phenomenon. Its broad appeal lies in how open-ended it is – but this also means it’s not without risk. From chatting with strangers on public servers to the grief of having a beloved creation destroyed, young players can face challenges if left unsupervised. Minecraft can also become a time sink for enthusiastic players, with late nights spent crafting and constructing, potentially impacting school and social lives.
The National College has created this free guide to help parents and educators understand how to keep young gamers safe – from choosing age-appropriate game modes to setting boundaries around screen time and spending.
Parent and Carer Support
Friends of Stockwell (FOS) PTA
We have an active PTA, called Friends of Stockwell, who do a brilliant job of fundraising for the school and bringing the community together. It is great to see new faces taking part. Every parent is a Friend of Stockwell. I ask that everyone gets involved. If you can spare an hour per term (that's three hours per year), your contribution would make a huge difference.
Please email friendsofstockwell@gmail.com to get involved.
The Eid celebration raised £205.50, which was put towards the cost of the event.
FOS Update
For the last 4 years, we have held a school summer fair, with stalls selling drinks, snacks and gifts; a bouncy castle and games; PTA cakes and tombola; and much more.
Unfortunately, the person who usually coordinates the fair is unable to do so this year. Without someone to take on this role, we won't be able to have a school fair this year :-(.
Have you ever wanted to get involved in event organising? We have a group of parents on the PTA who are happy to support you, but haven't got time / don't feel able to take on a coordinator role.
Please get in touch with friendsofstockwell@gmail.com if you're interested and want to know more about what this would involve.
Call to Action
Can you help out around the school? Are you a keen gardener? Do you have skills or knowledge that the children would benefit from? Visit our Call to Action page to let us know how you can help.
Attendance
Central to raising standards in all schools and ensuring all pupils can fulfil their potential is the need for children to attend school regularly to benefit from their education.
There is a strong link between good learning, high achievement, rapid progress and developing good social skills with excellent attendance.
We want to take this opportunity to outline our expectations for school attendance this academic year.
If your child arrives at school from 9am they will be marked as LATE, if they arrive after 9.30am, they will be classed as “late after the register is closed” and their attendance is classed as absent for the morning session. As the registers would have already been returned to the Department for Education.
Regular poor punctuality can also have a negative effect on your child’s attendance as well as their academic learning. Being 6 minutes late each day equals 30 minutes of missed learning every week.
If your child’s attendance drops below 90%, we will need to share our concerns with the Local Authority Education Welfare Officer at Lambeth Council.
Holidays in Term Time
Education Law states that it is not a parent’s right to take a child out of school during term time to go on holiday. Families must seek permission from the school and your school’s Headteacher is limited in what they can authorise. We can authorise leave if a child is in a performance and a performance license has been granted by the local authority. For any other authorised holiday, there must be extenuating circumstances therefore we cannot authorise a holiday because it is cheaper outside of term time.

School Uniform
School uniform should be worn throughout the school day. While we do not enforce that all school uniform should be branded, children should be wearing the correct colours (white t-shirt tops, navy trousers/ skirts/ pinafore dresses, sensible black shoes). Football boots/ coloured trainers are not school uniform and should not be worn.
Children should be changing into their PE kits for PE lessons (blue or black tracksuit bottoms, plain white t-shirt, trainers). We have made arrangements for girls and boys to be able to change separately, so the expectation is that all children change for PE.
While our supplier of school uniform is WearAbouts, we do have some items available for sale from the school office. Please check with us to see if we have what you need in stock.
Reporting a Concern
If you have a concern, please see your child's class teacher in the first instance.
If they are unable to resolve the problem, please speak to your child's phase leader.
If they are unable to help, please see one of the school's Assistant Headteachers.
If you are still dissatisfied, please see the Head of School.

Fostering in Lambeth
A new child comes into care every day in Lambeth. Many of these children will need the love and stability that a foster carer can provide.
What is fostering?
Being a foster parent means caring for someone else’s child as part of your family. Foster carers look after children who are unable to live with their parents, through no fault of their own. You'll be given lots of training and support, as well as allowances to cover living costs, the costs of food, travel and for the time you'll need to invest in supporting any child in your care.
Who can foster?
Lambeth Fostering welcome applications from everyone with a passion for caring. You just need to be over 21, have a spare room, good written and spoken English, and permanent UK residency.
Find out how you can be the difference: www.lambeth.gov.uk/be-the-difference
