PBIS School-Wide Celebration
We have continued to work hard being Respectful, Responsible and Safe at Vine Street School and we have now earned our next school-wide celebration! On Friday, March 28 students will enjoy guest readers, fun & educational activities like "flashlight" and "glow" reading, and a pajama day!! Students are invited to wear pajamas that day. Please be sure the pajamas are appropriate for school and students have boots and warm jackets/ski pants for outside play that day as pajamas are often thinner than regular clothing. If you have any questions about this, please reach out to your child's classroom teacher.
Drop off/Pick up on Larkin Street 🚗🚸
I know mornings are very busy and drop offs can be hectic, but I want to remind you to please drive slowly and carefully in the school drop off zone, including the four way intersection (stop sign) at Larkin and 6th Street. There are many families that walk to school and cross this intersection. Please be sure to stop completely at this stop sign. During school hours, Larkin Street and 6th Street has a 15 MPH speed limit. Thank you! 🚸
PEAK Night
Join us Thursday, March 27 from 5:30 - 6:30 pm for our March Movement and Mindfulness PEAK Night! See the flyer below for more information! FYI - please make sure your child is dressed in comfortable clothes for the dance part of the evening, and something you are not worried about possibly getting putty on it during our mindfulness piece of the evening.

Guest Reader
During library time, the Vine Street second grade classes participated in an event in collaboration with Maine Agriculture in the Classroom to have a guest speaker, Mrs. Katherine Garland, a horticulturist from the University of Maine, read and demonstrate the need for gardeners. Mrs. Garland read the students a book entitled, "Farmer Eva's Green Garden Life" by Jacueline Briggs Martin. Afterwards, the students were able to plant their own microgreens to take home to grow. Students learned what gardeners do and the importance of farming. They enjoyed getting to take home their own plants to care for as well! Second graders have the opportunity to go on a field trip later this spring to Rogers Farm at the University of Maine to learn more about Maine agriculture.

How Spring Got Its Name 🌸 🌱 🐣
- 🌱 The spring season gets its name from the verb "spring." It's a nod to the flowers and plants springing up, springing open, and bursting into blossom.
- 🐣 The word itself comes from the Old English word "springan," which means "to leap, burst forth, fly up; spread, grow."
- 🌸 During the 14th century, the word came to describe the spring season, the time when plants wake from their winter sleep and bloom.
- 🌅 Before that, the word "Lent" was used to describe the season: "In the past it was the main word for ‘spring.' Lent surfaced as ‘lencten,' that is, ‘lengten': the season got its name because in spring days lengthen." (full article here)
