What's Happeningat Perry 2-03-2025

Hi WAPMS Families,

Welcome to another week at W.A. Perry Middle School! As January comes to a close, it’s hard to believe how quickly the school year is moving! While we’ve been busy, it’s been a productive and rewarding start to 2025. As we dive into the rest of the year, we encourage families to help ensure students maintain strong attendance. Good attendance is key to academic success and helps students avoid the risk of losing credit or needing to attend summer school.

Looking ahead, we’re excited about the many fun events and activities planned for the coming months. Please review the growing calendar below and plan to support our students and staff. Have a great week! Go Eagles!

With Great Eagle Pride,

Dr. Robin L. Coletrain

Eagle Recovery for Quarter 2 started last week. This program is designed to give supplemental content material to your child so that they may have the opportunity to change their failing Q2 grade(s) to a passing grade of a 60. We will be using an online format called Progress Learning so that they can work on the assignments at any time of the day. The online assignments will be available on January 15th, and your child must complete them with at least a 60% accuracy to be considered done. Your student(s) will need to stay after school on select Wednesday evenings from 4-6 p.m. to receive assistance from a content teacher. The deadline for these assignments is February 19th. Please open your emails from Ms. Chynna Wilson for more details about the program, the rest of the dates, and to fill out the transportation form."

Additional information is forthcoming regarding date, time, and location. Attendance Matters Attendance Matters

We kindly remind all families that consistent attendance during these final weeks is essential, as our students will be participating in important assessments before the break. Every day of instruction counts in preparing your student for these tests and ensuring they enter the holidays confident in their achievements. Classes start at 8:40 AM each day. Students arriving at school after 8:40 am should report to the Main Office and get a pass to class. Parents should sign in late students at the Main Office or send a note with the student explaining the tardy. Repeated tardies to school and/or class will be referred to the grade-level administrator.

AVID's mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

In our AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school-wide program, students are provided with a color-coded system for organizing their notebooks and materials. This organizational strategy helps students keep their academic materials orderly and makes it easier to locate information quickly. Each subject is assigned a specific color. Red (ELA), Yellow (Math), Green (Social Studies), Blue (Science), Black (Related Arts) This practice is part of W.A. Perry AVID’s broader focus on organizational skills, which are crucial for academic success.

AVID Strategy of the Month AVID Strategy of the Month

The "Say, Mean, Matter" strategy is a critical thinking tool used to analyze texts or ideas. It involves three key steps:

  1. Say – Identify what the text literally says or its surface-level meaning.
  2. Mean – Interpret the deeper or implied meaning, considering context, tone, and symbolism.
  3. Matter – Discuss the significance or relevance of the information. Why is it important? How does it connect to larger themes, ideas, or real-world implications?

This strategy helps readers move beyond surface-level understanding, encouraging thoughtful analysis and reflection on the broader importance and impact of what they encounter.

SAY MEAN MATTER FOR TDA

Tidy Thursday Tidy Thursday

We want to remind you how important it is to keep your bookbags organized. A tidy bag helps you find your materials quickly and stay focused in class. During 4th period each Thursday, take a few minutes to reorganize and refresh your bag. A well-organized bookbag sets you up for success! Let’s keep our learning environment neat and efficient.
