Tidbits from the President
There are always things on the horizon. The registration for NTQF 2025 quilts is fast approaching (May 31). Please try to enter a quilt. I think we all love seeing quilts from someone we know. And I am really looking forward to the May workshop by Ann Moore. I’m always looking for new binding ideas. There is a limit to how many can attend, so contact Yvette if you are interested. May means the end of school (or almost) so many families are busy. I’m even going to a field day with my grandkids in a few weeks. Busy, busy, busy…gotta get some quilts finished!
See ya at the meeting.

With a patent-pending on its unique design, Fold&Sew quilts are unlike any other quilts you have encountered and are designed to be fast and simple to assemble. This makes Fold&Sew quilts ideal for novice quilters wanting to begin with a straightforward project, as well as veteran quilters wanting to create a handmade quilt in record time. She will be offering a workshop to teach her unique and fun quilt method.

QUILT SHOW TICKETS
PRESALE PRICE IS $12.
Each guild is given an allotment of quilt show tickets to sell. Hopefully, I (Grace Stroud) will be selling tickets at our next meeting. These tickets can be had for a lower price than on the days of the show, and the guild gets to keep all of the money we make selling tickets. So please plan to buy your tickets ahead of time. Buy extras for guests you’d like to invite. Help me to not turn in any unsold tickets.
Quilt Show Booth - The Heart of the Home
Time marches on and the quilt show will be here before we know it. I have been working along with many others to create handmade items having something to do with kitchen/dining to sell at our both. This month I’ve made potholders—bluebonnet potholders and chicken potholders. The chickens were fun to make; there are purple chickens and green chickens and chickens with pink wings! I’m hoping to make some wine bottle bags and some more jar and bottle openers. I’d love to have some table runners, some potato bags big enough for tortillas (fajita sized), and will be most grateful for any contributions. The best thing is that the guild gets to keep every penny we make in our booth. Can you, will you make just one beautiful thing to donate?
Raffle Quilt
We have a raffle quilt every 2 years.
We need someone to manage the raffle quilt for 2026. The planning and creation needs to be done THIS year.
Sunshine and Shadows
Send Sunshine and Shadows directly to Anne Houpt: annhoupt@aol.com or via text message

Frayed Knots
meets 2nd Tuesday evening
Tight Knots
The Tight Knots bee met on May 7th at the home of Grace Stroud. Chris Tomich brought multiple baby quilts to donate. Cecilia Villa showed us a vintage apron that she is donating to the boutique. Cheri Bigham and Carolyn Hughes both brought baby quilts to show. All of us turned in two pillowcases each to be donated to Safe Haven. We celebrated Cecilia’s birthday by gifting her with Kaffe Fassett fabrics. We ate pineapple upside down cake and played LRC for patriotic fat quarters that Pat Wagers won.
Start a BEE
One of the most fun parts of belonging to a Guild is getting to know other quilters. But, there aren’t many opportunities to actually get to SEW and learn from one another, except in a bee. Most of the guild bees have been around for many years and don’t have openings for many newcomers. If you want to get know more of your fellow members, start a new bee!
General Guidelines
- Start with the people sitting near you at Guild or advertise in the bee section of the newsletter, or on the FB page.
- A place to meet: dining room table, living room, playroom, apartment clubhouse, nearby church… You may want to rotate hosting among those with enough space.
- Monthly meeting time for 1.5-4 hours. Some groups may also have periodic all-day project days or retreats.
- Some groups organize around a common interest: appliqué, modern, art, charity projects, while some are based on proximity.
- Start simply and see how the group’s dynamics play out through time. There are lots of activity ideas online.
Retreat 2025
Retreat Pictures
Bev Ramsey Fund
Bev Ramsey was a charter member of the guild, a past president, a teacher and a friend. We lost her way too early. The Bev Ramsey fund was set up to help those in need enjoy the things she loved very much, retreats and workshops.
Quilts of Valor
It’s been a busy month for our QOV group. On April 27th we drove out to Newcastle, TX to award quilts to four Vietnam veterans. When we arrived, there was a fifth added to the list. He had already received his Quilt of Valor in November but was invited by his friends to bring it and be wrapped along with them. The more the merrier, right!
This small community put on an incredibly special event for their veterans. One of the members of their church sang America the Beautiful. The son of one of the veterans got up and spoke about how his dad was his hero and how proud he was of his service in the Air Force.
Our friends Bill and Leta Goodman, who usually attend our QOV ceremonies, also drove out present the Vietnam Commemorative pins. Laurel Grannan received a surviving spouse pin.
A lovely reception was held in the fellowship hall afterward.
QOV Sew Day at Hollis Threads May 22, 2025 9-4. The cost is $5 per person for the use of the facility. Please pay Jennifer when you arrive. You can come for a few hours or spend the entire day with us. Bring your lunch or pick something up from one of the many local restaurants. We will have quilt kits and block kits ready for you to sew. Just bring your sewing machine and your usual supplies.
More kits and information will be available for members to pick up at the May meeting. I have backing fabric to go with the QOV quilt tops you make.

Lovies
If you would like to make one (or 100) take two pieces of 14" square fabric - one cotton, and one flannel. Sew them right sides together, leaving a gap to turn. Turn, then topstitch around the entire piece.
Beverly Peterson collects them at Guild meetings to give to Harris Downtown for their NICU unit.
JPS NICU Quilts (and Cancer Care Center items)
Eighteen quilts were delivered to JPS in April. We had an assortment of NICU quilts and baby quilts plus one larger adult quilt. Thanks to all who donated.
Current request from JPS—bags that can be attached to walkers to hold keys, water bottles and other small items.
Carolyn Hughes and Judi Janes
JPS Co-Chairpersons
-------
We encourage each member to read the information below just to refresh your memory about all the items you can make for JPS. It’s not just NICU quilts. They love to get baby quilts of all sizes. The NICU quilts can’t contain flannel, but other quilts can. A new item added to the list is a wheelchair quilt (approximately 36 x 48).
Our donations are really appreciated by JPS, the moms, and any other patients who receive them.
NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Quilts
One of our community service projects is making NICU quilts for John Peter Smith Hospital. NICU quilts are 36” x 36” prewashed cotton quilts -NO Flannel. These are placed on the incubators in the intensive care unit and become the property of the baby/baby’s family. As some of you may know, the Tight Knots Quilt Bee makes NICU quilts each year as one of their community service projects. Maybe your bee would consider doing the same.
JPS has also requested other items for their patients:
Baby Items:
Receiving blankets and baby quilts – of all sizes
Layettes and Isolettes no smaller than 52”x56”
Cozy Cub Slipcover (tubular coverlet) See the link below for a sample of this item. 40 inches long
9 inches – circumference for small
11 inches – circumference for large
CozyCub–Dandle.LionMedical www.dandlelionmedical.com
Adult Items:
These items are mainly used for patients undergoing chemotherapy at the JPS cancer center and geriatric patients.
Bags to hang on walkers
Adult quilts or blankets (quilted or fleece)
Wheelchair quilt (approximately 36 x 48).
Ostomy bag covers
Small heart-shaped pillows for breast cancer patients to place under their arms after surgery

Help your Newsletter Editors !!!
After working with Smore for a while, we have run into limitations of the formatting available to us. It is easiest if the information is sent either as text, JPG or JPEG pictures. We can attach PDF, Word, and XL documents to the newsletter, but they will appear as links and the reader must download them to their device to read them (easier if done from a laptop/desktop). DOC files that contain text only will be copied into the newsletter, but some of the formatting may be lost.
I would like to share pictures of show-and-tell items, but we must have someone willing to take pictures and email them to the guild email address.
If you are unable to bring your project to the meeting for Show and Share, send a picture to the guild address - with subject - Newsletter show n share. We can include a brief description
