Letter from the 'Editor'

Hello LSSPs,

Happy Fall! I hope you are staying warm and dry and have been able to avoid the worst of this chilly rain.

Welcome to November. The initial wave of transfer students are wrapping up and the school year is now in full swing. I am sure you are getting inundated with requests for consults and evaluations. Everything is getting into a rhythm just in time for a series of breaks :)

While I am sure you all have your eyes on the Thanksgiving Break, don't forget about the all important event just before that: School Psychology Awareness Week 2018!

SPAW 2018 takes place from 11/12 to 11/16 and is a wonderful opportunity to share out with your teams and community about the important work that you all do and educate on the expertise and value you can provide to your colleagues and students. This year, NASP has selected the theme of "Unlock Potential: Find Your Password". There are a wide range of resources, ideas, and activities on the NASP SPAW Week site available now. I urge you to check it out and find a way to make SPAW week work for you. Read about the goal of the theme. Select and activity to use. Get a copy of the poster. Update your social media banner and post what you are doing with #unlockpotential.

Thanks for reading and enjoy Getting School Psych'd!

Good Reading in November

Here is a quick highlight of some great articles/websites to check out:

Joining Forces for Children - What Are ACEs?

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can have incredible impacts on children and their learning, but are frequently ignored or misrepresented. Take a quick dive into what ACEs are, the challenges they create, and how to address them.

Edutopia - Teaching Self-Regulation in the Early Grades

Self-Regulation is a critical executive function and needs to be addressed as early as possible, learn some simple practices and strategies to support Self-Regulation in early education.

Child Mind Institute - Understanding Anxiety in Children and Teens

This 2018 Children’s Mental Health Report looks at how widespread these disorders are, how they develop, and the risks of untreated anxiety.

LSSP Region 10 PD Survey

If you haven't already done so, please take a few minutes to complete the Region 10 LSSP Professional Development Survey below. This will be the primary data source for determining what professional development opportunities will be made available through Region 10.

I know 6 pages sounds daunting, but the survey is primarily rating scales and multiple choice questions, so it is not as lengthy as it seems and should take around 5-10 minutes to complete. Thanks for your input!

Getting to know you

One of my biggest goals of GSS is to get information about our LSSPs. I know your time is valuable and I don't want to ask you to spend half a day filling out tons of information, so I have settled on what I am calling the Two Question Quiz. Every so often, I humbly ask for you to answer two questions about yourself to help us get a better picture of the LSSPs in Region 10.

Intervention/Strategy: Social Stories Sampler

Social Stories are a very powerful intervention plan for students to help to better grasp some areas of social and emotional learning. Sometimes, the tough part of implementation and fidelity is coming up with the stories themselves. Have no fear! Dr. Carol Gray has come along with a Social Story Sampler.

This Social Story sampler comes with 16 ready made and ready to use social stories on tough topics such as safety, resilience, and stereotyping.
