Little Buddies Enrichment - Building connections across schools!
Our Little Buddies Enrichment has been working hard at building positive connections with younger students at Pearson Elementary. The teacher of the younger students reached out to Ms. Nuessler, the RMS teacher running the enrichment class, expressing that they had a newcomers to their class from outside of Canada who spoke only Arabic. These students were feeling disconnected and were struggling with positive connections. Ms. Nuessler worked with our ELL teachers to find some student volunteers to join the Little Buddies Enrichment, allowing them to come alongside our young newcomers - supporting them in their home language and helping them experience some positive connections at school. Well done!
MIDDLE SCHOOL MOMENTS
The importance of nutrition on our wellbeing.
Hi Dear Parents!
This time I would like to talk about the importance of nutrition and how it affects the everyday well-being of our adolescent children. Sometimes, I see some students that have difficulties concentrating, feeling anxious and tired. When I asked them when the last time was you had your meal, they say that they did not have any breakfast or they were not hungry to eat their breakfast or lunch. I would like to bring this topic since many students compare themselves to others and would like to look thin, and as a result they skip their breakfast or lunches to look good to others. It is also the images that are portrayed in social media that adolescents are following that they feel they are not thin enough to be noticed. I thought I would bring some facts on how nutrition plays an important role in our well-being.
Adolescence is a period of rapid physical, emotional, and mental development. Good nutrition is important because teenagers need enough energy and nutrients to support their growing bodies, learning, and overall well-being.
7 Reasons Nutrition Is Important for Adolescents
1. Supports growth and development
Adolescents experience rapid changes in height, weight, bones, muscles, and other body systems. Nutrients such as protein, calcium, and vitamin D help support healthy growth.
2. Improves learning and concentration
Regular meals and adequate nutrition help provide energy for the brain, supporting attention, memory, and participation in classroom activities.
3. Provides energy
Teenagers need energy for school, sports, social activities, and everyday tasks. Carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats all contribute to meeting energy needs.
4. Builds strong bones and muscles
Calcium, vitamin D, protein, and other nutrients help adolescents develop strong bones and muscles during an important period of growth.
5. Supports emotional well-being
Adequate nutrition can help maintain energy and reduce hunger-related irritability and fatigue. Eating well supports overall health, although it does not prevent or treat every mental health concern.
6. Supports the immune system
Vitamins, minerals, protein, and other nutrients help the body maintain normal immune function and recover from illness.
7. Develops lifelong healthy habits
Learning about balanced eating, hydration, and responding to hunger and fullness cues helps adolescents develop habits that can support their health into adulthood.
