Livonia PTSA Council Courier
April 2024
Welcome Back from Spring Break!
Thank You LPS Families and Units for Donating to the
Transportation, Maintanence and Warehouse
Appreciation Event!
Membership
Can you believe it's already April?!?! At this point in time, you should either be reaching out to members for next year's board or have your slate already selected. Remember, those on your slate should currently be members of your PTA/PTSA.
Are you getting ready for and having celebrations that will carry on throughout the remainder of the year? Those who are volunteering to help, are they members of your PTA/PTSA? If not, it's never too late to get them to join! Just remember, they have to become members by the end of April to be eligible for your unit to receive PEP points.
Nicole Dant, Membership Chair
PTA/PTSA Excellence Program (PEP)
It's that time! April is officially here. This is the last month to submit items for PEP credit. The end of this PEP year is the end of the day on April 30, 2024! If there's anything you want to count toward this year's total, and boost those PEP points even more, please submit them to PEP no later than the end of the day on April 30, 2024. If you notice any errors in your PTA/PTSA unit's PEP totals, please reach out to PEP as soon as possible with those concerns. They will be addressed as they come in. Any corrections that are submitted after April 30th will not be considered as the PEP year will be over. All entries that are received and marked May 1, 2024 will count toward next year's PEP totals. The top earning PTA/PTSA units will be announced after May 1st when all points have been totaled.
Good luck to you all!
Sara Bennett
Livonia PTSA Council, PEP chair
The PTSA Council Nominating Committee is pleased to present the following slate of officers for the 2024-2025 Livonia PTSA Council executive board. Voting will take place at the April 17th general membership meeting.
Second Grade Field Trip Experience:
LPTSA Council enjoyed having James McConnell from the Livonia Historical Society speak at one of our meetings regarding the "Second Grade Field Trip Experience" at Greenmead Historical Park. Students get to experience what a day in the Newburg School was like when it was a functioning school.
There are currently 16 second-grade LPS classrooms signed up for this field trip this spring. Still, it has become the Livonia Historical Society's goal to have every second class in LPS experience this educational and fun field trip.
Students will learn what a typical school day was for children who attended the Newburg School from how they dressed, what they brought their lunches in, what they learned, and how their school day compares to today's school day. And of course, there is the much-anticipated candy bag at the end of the trip! These are just a few of the trip highlights. Dr. McConnell has asked that we share this information with all of our units so that they may also share it with the admin and staff at their schools.
Dr. McConnell is also requesting donations from PTAs to help fund the trip. If your PTA is able to donate toward your second grade classrooms' trips, please contact him at jam1776@sbcglobal.net or 734-525-2962. You may need to amend your budget and add a line item.
If your school has an interest in having their second graders attend the Second Grade Field Trip Experience at Greenmead, they can reach out to the Livonia Historical Society at livoniahistoricalsocietymi.org or they can contact Susan Bailey, Greenmead Tour Coordinator at 248-477-7375.
COUNCIL'S UNIT SPOTLIGHT
Cleveland Elementary
In March, Cleveland Elementary had our 2nd Annual Cookies & Canvas event. This year, our new art teacher, Ms. Honicker, helped students and guests create a beautiful flower picture while munching on yummy cookies. We were able to have 100 painters this year!
We also had our first Reflections Virtual Assembly. Our school had 32 entries. Two entries received an award at the District level and one entry received an award at the State level. Our principal, Dr. Owens, hosted the two students, who are actually brothers, and their parents for the virtual assembly to celebrate with the whole school.
Hoover Elementary
March was reading month! We set a lofty goal of 4,000 hours for our students and staff, and they did it! Their reward was getting to duct tape Mr. D to the wall! We also had our 2nd Annual Literacy Night, which was a great success!
We also had a Dine to Donate at Panera, and a skate night!
Kennedy Elementary
Over at Kennedy, we have been having fun!
Recently, our students and families had a chance to attend a USA Hockey game and skate with the players afterward. Those who attended had a wonderful time!
Our Kennedy Stars also had the opportunity to attend a Family Skate Night at Riverside this month. These skate nights are always a big hit! This time the night was offered on a different evening of the week. Our PTA is always mindful to offer these events on different days throughout the year to give all students and families a chance to attend.
Our PTA happily stocked the lounge for our wonderful staff during the month of March. The snacks and drinks were a hit and helped lift everyone’s morale heading into the break.
Lastly, our PTA always helps to support March is Reading Month. This year at Kennedy, the theme revolved around Taylor Swift and it was an absolute hit with our kids and families. Our wonderful librarian spearheads everything and we love supporting her along the way.
Randolph Elementary
Webster Elementary
Welcome Spring! It was a busy March at Webster. We had two authors help us celebrate March is Reading Month: Kelly Dipucchio, a children's author; and Aimee Carter, a children's and young adult author. Then on March 18th, 11 teams of 5th and 6th graders competed in Battle of the Books. To go along with the theme of "When you read, your imagination can take you anywhere", Nelson from Wildlife Safari brought in some pretty exotic animals to share with our students. Our dine out at Dairy Queen and skate night at Riverside Arena allowed us to purchase a new recess cart!
