Last week in Mr. Romano's science class, as part of the introduction to their waves unit, students conducted a lab in which students had to recreate transverse and compression waves using large springs. Students measured the time it took each wave to travel the length of the lab table in order to calculate the speed of each one. The goal of this activity was to help students visualize the difference between the two forms of mechanical waves so that they can better understand how they transfer energy differently.

Students found that compressional (back-and-forth) waves, like those produced by sound, are faster than transverse (up-and-down) waves, like those we see in the ocean. Students were able to conclude that the reason the compression waves were faster was because they traveled in a straight line compared to the winding path taken by the transverse waves.

During the Fashion unit, 5th graders in Ms. Liska's Home and Careers class were participating in a color analysis. They were helping each other decide what "color season" they were based on different criteria. They used the drapes to first determine if the person's undertones were warm or cool, based on how each specific color made their face look. Then they used that information to determine if the person was a summer or winter (if they had a cool undertone) or a spring or autumn (if they had a warm undertone) again, based on which color drape brought out their features and made them look best.

Our 8th grade students celebrated finishing The Outsiders novel with a special 8th grade Spirit Day. Students came to school dressed as Greasers or Socs representing familiar characters from the novel. This was a fun way to celebrate their learning and bring literature to life!

Ms. Sadoff is preparing her 5th grade orchestra for their Stringfest concert. The class read the book "Spy Guy: The Not-so-Secret-Agent" by Jessica Young. Using the themes from the book the orchestra arranged their own musical "spy guy" story to play at the concert. Come join them and all of the 5-12 orchestra students at the Stringfest concert on Tuesday, April 21 at 7:30pm to hear what they came up with!

Big Knights meet Little Knights—Grade 7 continued a cherished tradition with their spring "Little Knights" visit to Miller School. They read books with excited 1st graders, led a spring craft, and visited former teachers.
