District 30 Board Brief
September 17, 2026 - Board of Education Meeting Summary
Learn about matters important to our schools
Join Conversations with the Community September 24!
Dear District 30 Community,
Our first weeks of school are off to a fantastic start! As we dive into a new school year, we are already seeing valuable learning and growth from our learners at Wescott, Willowbrook and Maple Schools.
Fall has also become an important time for us to reconnect with parents and community members through our invaluable “Conversations with the Community.” This semi-annual gathering welcomes all District 30 residents to learn about important school matters, talk with a member of our Board of Education and me, while also sharing time for questions and suggestions.
We learn so much from each other time and again, and I invite you to join us on Thursday, September 24, during an in-person session at noon in our district offices or virtually at 6 p.m. This month, participants will not only hear brief updates on what’s new in our schools for 2026-27 but also learn important information about economic development efforts in Northbrook that are likely to impact District 30 in the coming years.
Over the past year in this Board Brief, we have shared details on a residential development in the village that has been approved within District 30 boundaries, as well as a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district proposed near downtown, also within our school district. We have been working in close partnership with the Village of Northbrook to ensure we are serving as strong stewards of our district’s educational quality, facilities, and tax dollars – while also honoring our community’s priorities for a thriving downtown.
I invite anyone who lives within District 30 boundaries to join either an in-person session at our district offices in Northbrook at 12 p.m. on September 24, or to a virtual session at 6 p.m. that day. You can register at district30.org/conversations. Online registrants will receive an email link prior to the meeting, and in-person registrants will receive an email reminder the day prior.
Thank you for supporting our commitment to responsible financial stewardship, which ultimately benefits our students and schools!
Sincerely,
Dr. Emily K. Tammaru
Superintendent of Schools

Superintendent's report
Enrollment update
Dr. Tammaru reported that enrollment levels for the 2026-27 school year are steady, with a slight decrease in students overall throughout the District, likely due to low housing stock and high interest rates. She added that numbers are anticipated to increase notably in the coming years, however, with new housing developments approved within District 30 boundaries in both Northbrook and Glenview, and an additional development proposed in Northbrook, also within District 30.
Northbrook economic development and proposed TIF update
Dr. Tammaru shared an update with the Board on the latest developments regarding the Village of Northbrook's proposed tax increment financing (TIF) district that encompasses the former W.W. Grainger property at 1657 Shermer Road in downtown Northbrook, within District 30's Wescott and Maple School boundaries.
Most recently, the village posted the draft TIF Designation Report to its website on Friday, September 11, 2026. Dr. Tammaru also shared a memo detailing District 30's participation in the process, the potential operational impacts on District 30, and the district's commitment to working collaboratively with the village to support resident interests through proactive intergovernmental planning.
She noted that it is important for residents to be informed about these developments, their benefits, and their potential impacts. Therefore, the District 30 Conversations with the Community events on September 24 will focus primarily on exploring this topic.
Administrator search
With the June 2027 retirement of Mr. Dale Falk, Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations, District 30 is searching for a successor. Dr. Tammaru highlighted a stakeholder survey that is being shared with District 30 staff, PTO boards, and the Board of Education, as well as input meetings with Business Office staff to identify qualities for the ideal candidate. She added that District 30 aims to post the job by early October.
Board reports
TrueNorth
District 30 Board President Mr. Ammar Rizki detailed the most recent meeting of the TrueNorth Governing Board, which focused on the search for the cooperative's new director. The meeting included reviewing a hiring timeline and details on how stakeholders, including District 30, can provide input on the ideal candidate. He added that enrollment trends are positive and recently implemented financial changes are showing signs of success.
Dr. Tammaru discussed the recent fall meetings of the TrueNorth Executive Committee, which includes superintendents from each member school district. She also highlighted the director search and noted that TrueNorth is in excellent standing to recruit a highly capable director.
IASB 2026 Resolutions Committee Report
The Board received the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) 2026 Resolutions Committee Report that includes proposed resolutions to be acted upon at the annual meeting of the IASB Delegate Assembly on Saturday, November 21 in Chicago. The next Board meeting will name a delegate to the assembly.
Maple Springfield trip approved
The Board approved the annual Maple 7th-grade field trip to Springfield, which will once again be under the logistics of WorldStrides on November 2. Board policy requires approval for all field trips beyond a 200-mile radius. The trip was unanimously approved.
