Thank you to all our students for celebrating Read Across Hale'iwa Week with us! We had so much fun celebrating reading and story telling the same week of our Book Fair. We were happy to raise funds to help our student activities in the future.

Month of the Military Child Month of the Military Child

by Mrs. Tara

April is Month of the Military Child and here at Hale'iwa we wanted to recognize and learn a little bit more about this special group of kids. We spotlighted 8 students over the course of the month, asking them questions about where they've lived, what they like about being a military child, and what parts of being a military child are challenging for them.

Along the way we also learned that we have several former military children - both students and staff. We concluded the Month of the Military Child on Wednesday with a finale presentation and recognition where CAS Davis joined us to help honor these students. Military children are brave, resilient, strong, and open minded! We are grateful for the service of their parents and as we learned this month, they serve too!

Teachers of the Year Trip to Maui Schools Teachers of the Year Trip to Maui Schools

Aloha Everyone,

Last week Monday and Tuesday, I along with the 2023 Teachers of the Year had the opportunity to visit Maui schools. We learned about: school initiatives and exchange ideas on high priority topics, hosted a community talk story event at UH Maui College, were recognized by Maui Mayor Bissen, recorded videos to support beginning teachers, and engaged in a day of collaborative professional learning focused on sharing their expertise and brainstorming ways to strengthen public education.

Mahalo,

Mr. Haiola

EOEL: Guest Speakers and their Roles at Hale'iwa EOEL: Guest Speakers and their Roles at Hale'iwa

by Mrs. Angelica

As we are continuing our "Community Unit '' in our classroom and focusing on Caring for our Campus, we had some familiar faces come into our classroom to speak about their role here at Hale'iwa! They each talked about their jobs, how they became what they are, the best and hardest parts of their job, and what their favorite thing about Hale'iwa Elementary School is! Our students also brainstormed their very own questions to ask our guest speakers, in which we found out we shared a lot of common interests! Students asked our guest speakers questions such as what their favorite snack was, their favorite color, and if they had any pets to name a few! It was so nice getting to know the different guest speakers who came to speak to our students in our classroom! To thank our guests, our students sang them a song and made and gifted them a thank you card! EOEL is super thankful to all of the wonderful staff members who took time out of their day to come and speak with us! Mahalo!

Kindergarten: Flower Garden Kindergarten: Flower Garden

by Ms. Brooks

Kindergarten’s flower garden is still thriving. They have had new flowers bloom this week! For their science lesson this week, they became scientists and went out to their flower garden with magnifying glasses to observe their garden. They came up with different questions that a scientist might have regarding their garden. A few examples were, “What made this hole in the leaf of the flower?” “Why do the leaves have lines on them?” “How do the flowers open up?” “Why do the same seeds have different colored flowers?” We can’t wait to figure out the answers!

Third Grade: Field trip to Bishop Museum Third Grade: Field trip to Bishop Museum

by Mr. Baker

Third grade went on a field trip to Bishop Museum last week. Our class learned about animals, insects, sand, and Hawaiian studies.

Sixth Grade: Sharks Sixth Grade: Sharks

by Mrs. Villalpando

Did you know that sharks don't have bones? The hard material in their body is called cartilage. This is one of the reasons why they are so agile. We learned that sharks have a different perspective at the bottom of the ocean looking up, that is why shark attacks happen because they think humans are sea animals such as turtles and monk seals. We also learned that sharks are apex predators and are known to show signs of aggression to either show dominance or as a warning sign.
