Sunset Lane Sunday Message
November 1, 2026
Dear Seahawk Families,
Wow! What a crazy busy week, but one filled with so much learning, laughter, and fun! A huge thank you to all of our parent volunteers who helped make "Spooky Season" and Red Ribbon Week such a success! We are also so thankful the weather held off so we could enjoy our annual Halloween and School Spirit Parade. It was so much fun seeing all of our Seahawks showing off their spirit! As we head into November, we also look forward to celebrating Native American Heritage Month and recognizing the rich histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of Native American communities. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn, reflect, and celebrate the diversity that makes our community so special. I hope everyone is having an amazing weekend! November is also a time for gratitude, and I am looking forward to celebrating the amazing Seahawk family we are so lucky to be part of. Friendly reminder: No school on Monday due to it being a Staff Development Day. Enjoy the extra day, and we will see everyone back on Tuesday!
With warm regards,
Dr. Tracy Gyurina
OCDE Impact School Award
We are so excited to share that Sunset Lane has been named an Orange County Department of Education Impact School! This recognition was awarded to only four schools across all of Orange County, and we are incredibly proud to be one of them! This award is a reflection of the collective efforts of our amazing teachers, staff, students, and families. Together, we have worked hard to strengthen literacy instruction, grow successful readers, and, most importantly, foster a genuine JOY of reading in our Seahawks. This accomplishment belongs to our entire Seahawk family. Thank you for all you do to make Sunset Lane such a special place to learn and grow. We are so proud! ❤️

Fullerton School District California State Preschool Program (CSPP) has spaces available for the 2026-2027 school year. For more information, please visit the District website preschool page at www.fullertonsd.org/preschool or call the preschool office at 714-447-7499.
Importance of Attendance
We understand that family trips and travel can be meaningful experiences. However, we want to remind families that extended absences during the school year are strongly discouraged, as students miss valuable classroom instruction, collaboration, and hands-on learning that cannot be replicated outside of class. While Independent Study is an option to make up absences, please note that the work provided is more generic in nature and does not fully align with the lessons, projects, and discussions happening in the classroom. We appreciate your partnership in prioritizing consistent attendance so that your child can stay engaged and connected with their learning community.
Surprise Attendance Days
At Sunset Lane, we know that every day at school matters! In an effort to encourage strong attendance and celebrate students who are at school every day, on time, and ready to learn, we are excited to begin surprise attendance days! On a surprise attendance day, students who are present at school that day will automatically get to participate in a special incentive or surprise! There’s no sign-up and no advance notice. You simply have to be here to join in on the fun! We hope these surprise days add a little extra excitement to coming to school and remind our Seahawks that every day is an opportunity to learn, grow, connect, and SHINE! You never know when a surprise attendance day might happen… so be here and be ready!
Independent Study
As an ongoing friendly reminder, please make note that all Independent Study requests must be submitted by the end of the school day on the first day of your child’s absence. Requests cannot be backdated, and any submitted after the office closes at 4:00 p.m. will be applied only to future absence dates.
Independent Study Update for Students with IEPs
We want to share a quick update about Independent Study for students with IEPs. Because each student’s situation is unique, it’s important that families provide as much advance notice as possible when requesting Independent Study. This allows our team to review the request carefully and ensure all supports are in place. In some cases, especially when requests extend beyond 10 cumulative days, Independent Study may not be possible without prior notice. Early communication helps us plan together and determine the best option for your child. Thank you for your understanding and for partnering with us to support your child’s success.
Social Emotional Learning
Rethink Ed
Rethink Ed is not new to us. Our staff have had access to it for years and have used it to support students who needed extra help. What is changing is that we're now using it for everyone, at all three levels of support, so students hear the same language and skills whether they're in a whole class, a small group, or one-on-one with a counselor. There are 22 lessons across the year, which works out to two or three a month, about 20 to 30 minutes each. They follow the calendar we already keep: Bullying Prevention Month in October, Online Safety Week, and our monthly PBIS theme. Rethink Ed takes the place of Second Step, which we will no longer be using. Tier 1 is all students, Tier 2 adds small-group support, Tier 3 adds individualized support from our counseling team.
School Safety Reminders
Student and family safety is always a top priority at Sunset Lane, and keeping our campus and surrounding neighborhood safe is a shared responsibility. We have recently received concerns about pedestrian safety near the intersection of Sunrise Drive and Loma Verde Drive, particularly during arrival and dismissal. We understand that this is an area where many of our families walk, and we appreciate those who have brought their concerns forward. We are working to ensure the appropriate parties are aware and that the area receives the attention it deserves. We also want to remind families that arrival and dismissal can become very congested, particularly near our gates. After dropping off your child, please continue on rather than gathering or socializing near the gates, sidewalks, or blacktop. This is especially important around 8:20 a.m. and later, when additional families are still arriving. Crowded sidewalks and gathering near the gates can make it difficult for students and families to safely enter and exit campus, especially near the TK/K gate.
A few important reminders:
🚶 Please use designated crosswalks and model safe pedestrian habits for your children.
🚗 Please drive slowly and remain alert in the areas surrounding campus.
🚪 After drop-off, please leave campus promptly rather than gathering near the gates.
👥 Please keep sidewalks, gates, and walkways clear so students and families can move safely.
⏰ Please allow yourself enough time during arrival and dismissal so you are not rushing.
Thank you for partnering with us. Safety is everyone’s responsibility, and together we can help ensure that our students and families have a safe arrival and dismissal each day.
At Sunset Lane, student safety is always our top priority. We kindly ask all families to help us keep arrival and dismissal safe for everyone:
Please do not block the walkways or sidewalks near the TK/Kinder side gate or any school entrance. Students need a clear and safe path to enter and exit without having to step into the street. Once your drop your kiddos off, please move out of the way so our students can walk on the sidewalk safely.
Pets are not permitted on campus, including at pick-up and drop-off. While we know many families love their pets, not all children are comfortable around animals, and this helps ensure safety for everyone.
The Sunset Lane parking lot is ONLY for those with disabled placards and after school programs that pick up multiple students. No other vehicles should be entering the parking lot.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our campus safe and welcoming for all Seahawks!
The Fullerton Police Department let us know that they will be doing their best to patrol the area around our school more often. Please be mindful of following all traffic laws, as they will be issuing tickets to those in violation. Please check out our parking lot video for more details on how to successfully drop off and pick up your child/children.
Here are some friendly reminders:
- Always use crosswalks to cross the street and/or the staff parking lot. Even if accompanied by an adult, please do not cross the staff parking lot anywhere other than the crosswalks.
- Please do not walk in the middle of the staff parking lot. Use the crosswalks and sidewalk to leave campus. Since no one should be parking in the parking lot, there is no reason for you to be walking in the parking lot.
- Do not enter the staff parking lot unless you have a handicap placard or are an after school program that is picking up multiple students. Only park in the marked handicap spots or the parking lot loading zone if this applies to you. Even if you are dropping off your child/children for a before school activity, you should not be entering the staff parking lot.
- Remain in your vehicle at all times if you are in the loading zone and pull up as space becomes available. If you need to exit your vehicle, you must park across the street to do so.
- At the TK/K side gate, please drop your child/children off and promptly leave the area. This is a very small pick-up and drop-off location and we cannot have parents crowding around and blocking access to the gate and/or the sidewalk, making it unsafe for others to pass by.
- The side gate by room 208 and 210 is for bus loading and unloading only. No students should be entering or exiting campus from this location unless they are in Mr. Barbettini's or Mrs. Weber's classroom.

Family & Community Resources
Support and resources that are available in the Fullerton School District:
- Connect with Your School’s SSA - If your family is experiencing food insecurity, needs assistance with clothing, toiletries, or other essentials, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your school’s Social Services Assistant (SSA). Our dedicated SSA team members can help connect you with resources that make a meaningful difference.
- Food Distributions in FSD - We also want to share that several of our schools host food pantries, and our district maintains a permanent pantry that is open twice a week. No family should go without the necessities they need. We are here to help.
- Additional Resources - To learn more about available support or how to access services, please contact your school’s Social Services Assistant (SSA) or reach out to Juan Fonseca, FSD Community Liaison, at (714) 447-7519. You can also reference the attached flyer for links to current and upcoming food resources, and we will also update this webpage with resources as they become available: bit.ly/foodresourcesfsd. We are proud to serve such a caring and connected community and remain deeply committed to supporting all FSD families.
