Dear Syosset Community:

I learned a new quote this week: “Art is how we decorate space, music is how we decorate time” (Jean-Michel Basquiat). The point was brought home at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting in the contrast between a moment of silence – undecorated time – remembering those from the Farmingdale bus accident, followed by the most beautifully decorated time, the extraordinary musicianship of pianists Theodore Gaeta and Emily Young. Both are Seniors who achieved perfect scores on a Level 6 NYSSMA Solo and had been part of our Honors Piano Recital last Saturday alongside 13 other students of all ages celebrating this same accomplishment.

The Board and District administration also continued discussions about our facilities – how to deal with our aging physical plant and our growing student body – and how to be thoughtful stewards of the community’s assets by prioritizing the work ahead. The Board will resume that conversation later this month on Wednesday, October 18th.

In the News📰

New York’s PIX11 stopped by volleyball practice this week to spotlight Senior volleyball player Aaron Johnson in their “New York’s Very Own” segment. The story highlights Aaron’s talents on the court – at 6’5” he’s an imposing middle blocker. Off the court, Aaron volunteers in our community. He said in the interview, “You’re not winning if you’re not a team.” Good advice for volleyball… and for life! Congrats, Aaron!

Spotlight on Instruction 🔦

Back in my pre-med days, my favorite class in college was Comparative Primate Anatomy. I liked it so much, I went on to be a Teaching Assistant both as an undergrad and then again in grad school. We dissected and compared monkeys, baboons, and a human cadaver. So, you can imagine my delight in Syosset’s new “Pre-medical Anatomy and Physiology” class. This full-year, college-accredited course covers a detailed overview of mammalian physiology for students pursuing health sciences, such as human or veterinary medicine. Taking the place of a real cadaver is a sophisticated 3D virtual dissection device called an Anatomage Table. With this tool, not only will students cover the structural and functional organization of the human body, they’ll also explore the interdependent relationships between different anatomo-physiological systems, and the diseases and disorders of each system, with the ability to visualize both healthy and diseased body tissues. I hope our students find it as fascinating as I did.

Syosset High School offers 31 Advanced Placement courses–that in itself is an accomplishment that makes me so proud. But wait… there’s more! The College Board has awarded us a “Gold Distinction” on its AP School Honor Roll. Schools earn this recognition annually based on criteria that reflect a commitment to providing opportunities for students to earn college credit, and maximize college readiness. Last year, 78% of our seniors took at least one AP exam, 70% scored a three or higher on at least one exam, and 46% took five or more exams. We are so grateful for this honor – and that we are able to offer such a breadth of opportunities to our students.

Taking advantage of a Sunday rain date, Syosset hosted Relay for Life to raise money for the American Cancer Society with an event at the high school track. The Relay movement is dedicated to helping communities find a cure for cancer and raise awareness. There were more than 250 participants – and the event raised more than $18,000! This rain date was truly all about bringing the sunshine.

Bright Spot

Sophomores Quincy Elyahou and Sydney Youngman are cleaning out their closets – while giving to those without. The two have started the Syosset/Woodbury chapter of Hoodies for the Homeless. The student-founded nonprofit collects sweatshirts and donates them to homeless shelters. Quincy and Sydney realized they had an abundance of swag they have received over the years that would better serve homeless members of our community. The girls added collection bins to their front porches, and have encouraged their friends to drop off their hoodies as well. They’ve already donated several hundred to The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. If you or anyone you know is interested in donating, you can message Quincy (@quincyelyahou) and Sydney (@sydfaryl) on Instagram to find out how. With winter coming, I’m certain these cuddly donations are so appreciated. Thank you both for making our community even warmer!

A reminder our District is closed on Monday. Enjoy the long weekend!
