Principal's Priorities: Supporting Third Grade Readers
3rd Grade State Testing
Attention third grade parents, on Tuesday 10-17-23 and Wednesday 10-18-23, your third grade student will be taking the third grade Ohio State Test. This test is an important snapshot into how your student is progressing in reading, and we wanted to provide you with resources that you might find helpful over the weekend and throughout the year. Students will also be taking this test again in the spring.
Student and Families page on the Ohio Department of Education- this link gives you a plethora of information about Ohio tests and the third grade reading guarantee.
Practice Test- you can log in here and take a practice test with your student which can help familiarize them with HOW the test works. You may even share your own personal tips and tricks with how you navigate through text.
Students are asked to type about their reading, so we hope you will encourage your student to write out their idea by hand and then work on typing their response into the computer, as it is hard for students this young to type their ideas straight into the computer.
Of course, most importantly, a good night's rest on Monday and Tuesday along with breakfast and words of encouragement will be the most impactful. Thank you for partnering with us in encouraging and supporting our third graders through this big step.
Veteran's Day Program- Save The Date!
On November 10, at 9:00 am we will celebrating Veteran's Day with a special program. We invite any relative or friend of a Jefferson Elementary student who has served, or is currently serving our country, to join us on Friday, November 10th at 9:00am so we can honor them for their service. Veterans are invited to dress in uniform or join us in red, white and blue attire!
Be sure to review next week's Jefferson Journal for a link to RSVP for the program.
Counselor's Corner- Parent Time-outs!
Mrs. Haringa - School Counselor
Time-outs can be a very useful tool for adults to use on themselves. When we find ourselves frustrated and at the end of our ropes we can take our own time-out, sort of like a pause button to use during difficult moments. Not only do we get the chance to gather our bearings, we are also modeling self-awareness and taking care of our emotional needs. It's best to let your child know of your plan ahead of time when everyone is calm. Tell them how long your break will be (can use microwave or Alexa as a timer), that you will be nearby and will return to finish the discussion so they do not feel abandoned. Time out is not intended to be a punishment for anyone - it is the chance to focus on feeling and thinking in order to show up in a better way with others.
GRIN provides food to be sent home on Fridays for families in need. If this is something you would be interested in, please fill out this form and send it back to me. You can also email me at haringah@gjps.org.
If you have a social, emotional concern for your child that impacts them while they are at school and would like to share this with me to see how we can help support your child, please fill out this form. Family Counseling Referral Form
