Kathleen Janke - Reading Interventionist

Tell us about your family.

My husband, Jason, and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary last November. We have three wonderful boys together. James is our oldest at 22. He is away studying engineering at Iowa State University. Our twins, Michael and Alex are 19. Michael is at MCC studying to be a firefighter and Alex is at Illinois State University studying to be an English teacher.

What is something that makes you really proud?

My boys make me so proud every day! It has been so fun to watch them grow into young men and start to make their own lives.

What is your favorite hobby?

I love reading and jigsaw puzzles. My happy place is listening to an audiobook AND working on a puzzle at the same time! I also love to travel. We have a farm in Kansas where we spend most of each summer. We’ve also been to Scotland, Ireland, Japan, Canada, and all over the United States. Experiencing new places with all my boys is the best!! Plus it is one of the few ways I can get them all together!

What is your favorite food?

Peanuts, in any form, are my absolute favorite snack!

What is something you have learned lately?

I have learned how to be an empty nester. I am still adjusting to having a quiet house without three rowdy boys running around. I don’t always know what to do with all the extra time.

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

I think I would be narwhal. It is the closest real animal to a unicorn and who doesn’t want to be a unicorn!

What is your favorite thing about Prairie Grove?

PG is a family! Staff, students, and families all working together to grow and learn every day.

Jill Elliott-Student Services Administrative Assistant

1. Tell us about your family.

Hello! My name is Jill Elliott and I am the new Student Services Administrative Assistant here at Prairie Grove. I have lived in Johnsburg with my husband, Jeff, for about 17 years. We have 3 kids who keep us very busy after work hours with sporting events, music lessons, and friends. Our oldest daughter is 14 and she is a freshman at Johnsburg High. She is an amazing artist and has recently been learning to play guitar! My middle daughter is 12 and a 7th grader at Montini Catholic School in Mchenry. She is a super fan of any stuffed animal, Taylor Swift and Benson Boone. She loves volleyball and plays on her school team and club. Our youngest is Brecken, and he is 11, a 6th grader at Montini. He plays basketball for his school and a travel team. He will out run and out Lego anyone given the chance. We also have 2 pug puppies! Pearl and Pepper are 1 year old sisters. We really don’t know what entertained us before they came along. They are an absolute trip and we all love them dearly.

2. What is something that makes you really proud?

My kids make me so proud! They amaze me every day with their curiosity, kindness and the way they see the world. Somehow, they end up teaching me just as much as I try to teach them - about patience, perspective, and finding joy in the little things. They push me outside of my own comfort zone daily! Watching them grow into such wonderful humans fills my heart with gratitude and love.

3. What is your favorite hobby?

My favorite way to fill my time is reading! I am an avid reader and use my time reading to decompress and fill my bucket. My favorite genre is historical fiction, but my book taste overall is very eclectic. I am always looking for recommendations! I love plants and gardening. Spending time outside with my kids while they still want to shoot hoops or play volleyball in the front yard trumps anything else on a nice day.

4. What is your favorite food?

My favorite food in general is pizza or mexican; however, I will always overindulge on my husband's carbonara! That is my absolute favorite!

5. What is something you have learned lately?

Lately, I have been learning all sorts of things with my new role here at PG! The SPED world in education is new to me. Luckily, the administrative assistant role in a school is not new to me. I spend a lot of time watching training videos and trying not to bug Barb Bailey in her new found retirement with questions!

6. If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

If I were an animal I would be a bird! Birds are so wild and free. When you get a chance to see them up close their colors and characteristics can be outstanding. I would love to be able to just fly anywhere I wanted to travel to.

7. What is your favorite thing about Prairie Grove?

My favorite thing about Prairie Grove so far has been the people. From my initial interview, to the paperwork process and then onboarding and training, everyone has been kind, helpful and down to earth. The kids are great too! They keep the day enjoyable and entertaining! I love learning little things about them as they stop in the office for help, or have questions.
