Principal's Message
Dear Hallinan Families,
With the help of music teacher, Mr Haynor, the very creative 2nd grade students in Mrs Lindsey's, Ms Locke's and Mrs McLaren's class performed The Lorax for their families this week. I am so glad I had the opportunity to watch some of their magical performances!
It has also been such a delight to see the excitement of the Book Fair at Hallinan! A new (or new to me) book is always such a welcome treat. And I love the moments I get to visit a classroom and read a good book. If you are looking for a good storytime, consider visiting the Book Fair tonight between 5 and 8 pm for Storyteller Night in the Library. Students are encouraged to wear PJs and bring a stuffy – stuffies are invited to spend the night in the school!
Want even more opportunities to read? Check out the LOSD Winter Break Read-A-Thon message and video below.
I hope you and your children are able to carve out some time to read a good book or two (or more!) this holiday season!

Mrs Landau and all of her wonderful volunteers have been hosting the Book Fair this week - we hope you have had the opportunity to visit and see some of the amazing books on hand. Next week, as we continue our study of the character trait EMPATHY, she will read In Your Shoes: A Story of Empathy by Kristin Johnson to our Pre-K-2 students and Chocolate Milk, Por Favor: Celebrating Diversity with Empathy, by Maria Dismondy to our 3-5 students. AiS = Architects in Schools COMING TO HALLINAN
Dear Hallinan Families with 5th grade students,
A very exciting opportunity is quickly approaching! I (Mrs. Doran) applied for a program called Architects in Schools and was accepted! All 5th graders will experience this in-house architect residency project in STEM January 23rd-February 10th!
In the AiS program, all students learn:
- That design is all around us and we make decisions every day that affect our environment.
- How the subjects they study in school apply to the real world outside of school.
- That design of the built environment affects and is affected by human behavior.
- That there are many people who create the spaces in which we live, learn, work and play, and some examples of their jobs (i.e. architects, landscape architects, structural and civil engineers, contractors, urban planners, etc.).
- Skills that help them work better in groups, communicate their ideas, and understand that designing and building spaces is a process as well as a product.
The AiS program is not trying to create “mini design professionals.” Although, some students realize through their participation in AiS that they’d like to grow up to design and build spaces, all students participating learn important skills through lessons that include cooperation and planning, connect to the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards and help to gain a better sense of how school relates to the “real world.”
With the help of local professionals, our 5th graders "home" projects will take 2-3 weeks to complete. We can't wait to dive into this experience and I am so excited to share all the things with you!
There is only 1 thing needed from you -- Please complete the image release forms for AiS as soon as possible! Thank you for your help in making Hallinan such a special place to learn!

Hello Hallinan Families!
Slices of Gratitude
Let's show our gratitude for ALL our support staff & specialty teachers! And let's do it in the form of gift cards and holiday goodies!
The gifting collection ends on 12/12!!!
You may have already seen emails from your child's Room Parents about the ALL support staff & specialty teacher collection. Your Room Parents will also be collecting for your child's teacher, please note that this is a separate collection.
Support staff & specialty teachers GIVE SO MUCH each and every day but they do not have individual Room Parents to lend them a helping hand or spoil them during the holidays. That is why the whole school comes together and creates one big pool of thanks. There are two ways to donate money to specialty teachers & support staff.
- Membership Toolkit: https://hallinanpto.membershiptoolkit.com/packet/3337
- Venmo. We are using Shelby Setters's personal Venmo: @Shelby-Setter or the QR code up above.
Again, the collection ends on 12/12. On 12/13 our incredible Hospitality Team (Audra & Catherine) work their magic!

Winter Break Read-A-Thon!
Your elementary student is invited to join in LOSD’s first-annual Winter Break Read-A-Thon! It’s a fun program developed by our high school students. Your child will learn more about it during library time. Keep reading for more information and watch the video:
What is a “Read-A-Thon”?:
All elementary school students in LOSD are encouraged to read as much as they can over winter break! Read alone, with an adult, listen to an audiobook…whatever inspires a love of literacy!
Family and friends are asked to pledge an amount for each book their student reads to a corresponding class fund.
One-time donations and/or continuous pledges per books read are accepted.
All donations support our local Lake Oswego Public Library and SMART Reading, an Oregon-based organization whose goal is to provide access to books and reading sessions to students in need.
Our Goal:
To encourage elementary school students to read at least five books over winter break.
To inspire elementary school students to raise $20 each to help us reach our district-wide goal of $5,000+ in donations!
To promote healthy reading habits throughout our local district, and to improve literacy across Oregon!
How to participate:
We are using a website called 99Pledges to keep track of reading and collect donations.
Here's how it works:
Click here to create an account for your student. Scroll down to the bottom, and click "Add Participant".
Once you fill out the quick form, you will receive an email from 99Pledges. The email will have two links: one to manage your page and one to share with others to collect donations.
Once your student's page is created, send the link to relatives and friends so they can help support your student in their reading goals! When sending the link, share how many books your student plans to read so their donors can pledge accordingly.
Each time your student finishes a book, update the book tracker on the website!
Prizes:
Every LOSD school that raises $3,000 or more by the end of the Winter Break Read-A-Thon will be entered into a drawing for a school-wide donut party! (Note: We will have alternative prizes for students with dietary restrictions or allergies).
The school that reads the most books will be crowned "The FIRST-EVER LOSD Read-A-Thon Champions!", and will receive a giant banner to put in their library, presented by us at a celebratory school assembly!
On top of this, a prize will be awarded to the student who reads the most in each grade across the district!
Thank You!
Thank you to our amazing LOSD community for all the time and support you dedicate to our local community and kids. It’s because of your support we can host fun events such as these. We wish you all the best this holiday season, and happy reading!

Oregon State Assessment Opt-Out Form
Each school year, Oregon students take assessments to meet federal requirements. The purpose of these assessments is to provide data that schools can use to ensure that every child is on track and achieving learning goals.
State law requires us to inform you that a form is available from the State Department of Education that allows you to opt your child out of the math and English Language Arts assessments for the current school year. Should you wish to opt out your child, fill out the form and submit it to the main office at your child’s school. Please note the submission deadlines listed on the form. Meeting the deadline will help the school with planning and preparation. If you wish your child not to participate in the science assessment for grades 5, 8, and 11, submit this request in writing to the principal of your child's school.
If you have questions or want more information about state assessments, please contact your child’s principal or teacher(s).
Click here for opt-out form for Math and English Language Arts.
Winter i-Ready
This Winter, all elementary students will complete two online i-Ready assessments. Like Fall, one is for math and the other is for reading. i-Ready is a diagnostic that will help us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows us to meet your child where they are and provides us with data to inform and tailor instruction to accelerate growth. This is the second of three i-Ready assessments we give each year, and the results will be shared with parents.
Practice Skills at Home with i-Ready Personalized Instruction (My Path)
To unlock i-Ready's full potential, students should access 45 minutes of instruction per subject (reading and math) per week. Each student's i-Ready Personalized Instruction (My Path) provides instruction at their individual level, allowing them to practice the skills they need to be successful.
With holiday breaks coming up, i-Ready Personalized Instruction (My Path) is an excellent option to help keep your student's skills sharp and extend their learning.
If you have any questions about how to access i-Ready Personalized Instruction (My Path) on your student's device, please feel free to contact your teacher.
