National Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day

Each March, we recognize National Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) Day to honor the dedicated professionals who translate the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living. At the Murray State University School of Nursing and Health Professions, we’re proud to celebrate the incredible work of our own RDs who are shaping the future of nutrition and wellness through education, research, and community outreach.

Our faculty and program leaders in the Nutrition and Dietetics program are more than educators—they are advocates for health who equip students with the knowledge and skills to improve lives through evidence-based nutrition care. Whether it’s leading classroom instruction, guiding student research, supervising hands-on clinical experiences, or engaging in public health initiatives, their work reflects the highest standards of the profession.

What makes our RDs exceptional?
- They prepare future dietitians through a rigorous, accredited program.
- They mentor students to become compassionate, competent healthcare professionals.
- They contribute to community wellness through initiatives that address food insecurity, chronic disease prevention, and health education.

As we celebrate RDN Day, we thank our faculty who bring their passion for nutrition to life every day and inspire the next generation of leaders in health and wellness.

Going BLUE for Colon Cancer Awareness Month

March was Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and at the SONHP, our students and faculty went BLUE to raise awareness about one of the most preventable — yet often undetected — forms of cancer.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., but with regular screening and early detection, it’s highly treatable. To help get the word out during March, our Nursing students had the opportunity to help educate the community about the importance of colon cancer screenings using Kentucky Cancer Program - West's Incredible Colon while at Mercy Health - Lourdes Hospital. Remember that together we can make a difference by promoting education, prevention, and early intervention!

By investing in education, experience, and community engagement, the Purchase AHEC is helping build a stronger, more connected healthcare workforce for Kentucky.

Anesthesia Workshop

Our Anesthesia students gained hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology in their most recent on-campus workshop!

In Mason Hall, students were able to learn to use the GlideScope BFlex 2 Bronchoscope and how it can help in visualizing the airway during intubation, ensuring precision and patient safety. Over in our simulation lab, CRNA students tried out VR anesthesia simulations and combined forces with the BSN students on an interprofessional maternal hemorrhage and neonatal code simulation.

Psychological Simulation

Dr. Reid’s NUR 402 students stepped into a psychological nursing simulation, where they practiced balancing empathy, compassion, and critical thinking while completing a patient assessment. Simulations like this are an important reminder that mental health care goes beyond medical interventions—it requires understanding, active listening, and a human connection.

Julie Scrand - Educating to Empower

As we celebrate the incredible contributions of women in healthcare this month, we are proud to spotlight Julie Schrand, a 1997 graduate of Murray State University’s School of Nursing and Health Professions (SONHP), whose work in continuing medical education is making a powerful impact across the nation.

Julie earned her Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology and now resides in Pittsburgh, PA, where she serves as Senior Director of Medical Education at Medscape, a Certified Medical Education (CME) company. In her role, she partners with pharmaceutical, device, and diagnostic companies to build fair and balanced education for healthcare professionals (HCPs). These programs ensure that HCPs stay informed about new and emerging therapies that improve patient care—both those available today and those still awaiting FDA approval.

Julie credits her academic foundation at Murray State for helping her develop an understanding of clinical terminology and healthcare systems—knowledge that has proved critical throughout her career. “My degree is an HCP degree, so that helped from the perspective of understanding the terminology,” she shares.

But Julie’s journey isn’t just professional—it's deeply personal. Last year, she underwent a double mastectomy for breast cancer. Her background in medical education empowered her to make informed decisions about her diagnosis, treatment options, and recovery. “With the knowledge I have in this space, I was very confident in my decision, which led to a great outcome,” she says.

Outside of work, Julie finds joy in spending time with her husband of 28 years and their two daughters, ages 11 and 15. Guiding her daughters and watching them discover their own passions brings her purpose and joy.

When asked what advice she has for current students, Julie offers this heartfelt encouragement:

“Get your degree. Education is key for success in the corporate world. Don't get so hung up on what you will be doing the rest of your life right now, but get a degree, be open to new possibilities, and be a lifelong learner.”

Julie Schrand’s story is a testament to the resilience, adaptability, and compassion that women bring to healthcare leadership every day. We are honored to count her among our alumni and celebrate her continued impact.
