News from the Technology Department

As we approach the last day of the current school year, Thursday June 5, 2025, we need your help to return internet hotspots and student devices as detailed below. Students in Grade K through 4 will have summer access to many school apps through personal devices were availble at home, while grade 5 through 11 students will continue to have access through their school issued devices.

Student Apps

All students can continue to access RapidIdentity Go! portal at apps.isd728.org during summer months. Some classroom digital resources may be limited as grade levels are updated and systems are prepared for the new school year. Instructional delivery by teachers will not be available outside of offered summer programs for eligible students.

Student Devices

All school issued hotspots for internet access are asked to be returned to school or the District Office by the last day of school, which is when they will be disabled from use. This will allow time to prepare the technology for the upcoming school year.

Grade 12 students or students not returning to ISD 728 will return their chromebook at the end of the school year, or after finishing summer school. Look for your school's communications for detailed instructions. Device drop off will also be available after school is out, Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. at the District Office located at 11500 193rd Ave NW, Elk River, MN 55330. Devices not returned will be disabled from use and a replacement fee will be charged. Google Takeout is available for students graduating or leaving ISD 728, allowing taking personal content and school work from their student accounts before being turned off.

Grade K-4 and Early Childhood families who have school iPads or Chromebooks are asked to return them to their school or the District Office by the last day of school when they will be disabled from use unless otherwise arranged. Look for your school's communications for detailed instructions where applicable.

Grade 5-11 students will continue to have access to their school issued Chromebook during summer months. This allows students continued learning opportunities during summer programs, as well as additional options to stay connected to their schools, friends, family and the community during the summer break.

  • Protection plan coverage or repair fees for damaged or lost devices will apply during summer use. Protection plan sign-up information is available here if not already covered and interested.

  • If you are not planning to use your assigned district-provided technology over the summer, please store your device in a safe place to be ready for return in the coming school year.

  • Support, repair, and replacement options will be available during the summer starting after school is out, available by phone (763) 241-3490 or by visiting isd728.org/LetsChat Technology option to arrange onsite appointments when needed.

  • Safety and Internet Filtering at Home - ISD 728 chromebooks will continue to have summer filtering to help protect students against harmful or inappropriate online material.

New or infrequently used websites that are not yet known by the GoGuadian web filter will not be accessible to students until the system categorizes appropriately. It is a similar process to doing a brief background check for those we invite into the learning environment. If legitimate websites are blocked, reach out for assistance to have them re-evaluated. Some popular sites may be temporarily blocked due to security concerns, and others may not be available for certain grade students.

Despite the District's attempt to filter and provide additional protections outside of school, parents/guardians still play an important role in supervising their child's internet access and usage. Parents are encouraged to discuss rules for appropriate internet usage, and reinforce lessons of digital citizenship and safety. Please review our technology responsible use guidelines and visit isd728.org/academics/digital-learning-728/digital-wellness to learn more about available parent resources.

  • Visit here for more information about what is filtered.

  • Visit GoGuardain Parent App for information on how parents and guardians can monitor their children's chromebook browsing activity, and choose to block sites such as YouTube.

  • Schools will continue to receive real time Smart Alerts if a student views inappropriate content, resulting in the student's device being disabled until school resumes.

Have a safe and wonderful summer break!

Parenting for Digital Wellness

Empowering Parents: Steps to Foster Healthy Technology Habits in Children

As parents, understanding the appropriate use of cell phones and social media is more crucial than ever. While social media offers some positives, there are indicators that it can also affect the mental health and well-being of young people.

With increased access to digital technology among adolescents, the potential impact on their mental health and overall well-being has become a growing concern. Research by the US Department of Health and Human Services shows that social media use by young people is nearly universal, with up to 95% of those aged 13-17 reporting using a social media platform and more than a third saying they use social media “almost constantly.”

The Surgeon General's recent advisory further underscores the importance of this topic, emphasizing the need for parents to be proactive in establishing guidelines for technology use at home. These guidelines can include creating tech-free zones, teaching responsible online behavior, and ensuring that children are aware of the potential risks associated with excessive screen time. By staying informed and involved, parents can help their children navigate the digital landscape safely, fostering a healthier relationship with technology in your family.

Have a Safe and Fun Summer!

To ensure teen safety during summer break, parents can create a "cool house" that offers structured fun and safe activities, implement regular check-ins, and emphasize water safety. Additionally, promoting healthy habits like staying hydrated and avoiding sun exposure, along with driving safety measures, can help prevent accidents and emergencies.
