A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
As we enter the final week of Term One, it is important to recognise this has been a far from ordinary period of time. As a community we have achieved, endured and reflected a great deal.
Last Friday afternoon the College community was shaken by the collapse of Mark Vivian at the end of the Cross Country. The wonderful rallying of the College staff, parents and students to play a role in supporting the incredible efforts of the Phys Ed team, especially Marius Ndiaye, Boston Williamson, Sarah Fogliani and Renea Mayer, to administer the necessary first response measures for Mark was truly special and inspiring. Since Friday I have received so many messages from our families expressing their support, thanks and acknowledgement of our amazing staff. Mr Vivian is progressing extremely well as a result of the first aid administered. Along with the many staff who worked together. I am also grateful to Fiona Leck and Antonette Fazzari for their leadership throughout the whole weekend.
Mr Vivian has asked that the photo below of the PE staff visiting him last Sunday is shared with you all.
TOGETHERNESS
I have referred to and written many times to the statement that we live in the shelter of each other. The African proverb that says "I am because we are" is so pertinent for us at this point in time. Our College will continue to strengthen where there is unity and togetherness. We combine together in many ways – House teams, Learning Area teams, Year teams, Admin teams, Leadership teams, Class teams, Sport teams and many more. It is important to celebrate the excellence that occurs when teams function at a high level. The value of community connection is so important.
Here are some reminders of our togetherness.
TOWARDS EASTER Our term will conclude with a special whole school liturgy which will take us into Easter. A special part of this Liturgy will be the sharing of the now completed Stations of the Cross Project. The Liturgy will lead us into the Easter period and will be a special start to Prendiville Day.
GRATITUDE
It is always great to reflect with gratitude on all the good that happens at our College. It has been a difficult term outside the classrooms and admin offices – despite these challenges every staff member has been giving their very best in their own unique way.
The theme of LIFE at Prendiville has never been more relevant - let us all embrace and continue to appreciate LIFE@PRENDIVILLE in 2019. These actions are as important for our staff as our students:
L- Love learning, living and one another.
I - Include others leaving no one out
F - Foster friendship and faith
E - Encourage and enjoy the success of others.
The special time of Easter will fall during the holidays. Easter is a time where we can experience all emotions. I always encourage people to attend as many of the Easter Masses as they can to experience the Easter Story. It is a time of reflection and renewal. It is a time of sadness, joy and hope.
May your time together be a celebration of life and love. Enjoy a restful break and a time of reflection at Easter and also on ANZAC Day.

STUDENT, PARENT AND TEACHER CONFERENCES
Tuesday 30 April – 1pm to 7pm
Student, Parent & Teacher Conferences (Parent-Teacher Interviews) will be conducted on Tuesday 30 April from 1.00pm – 7.00pm. Parental presence in the College enhances student learning and promotes understanding between home and school. The richness of this conversation is enhanced if the student is part of this conversation and as such students are expected to attend interviews with their parents. This day is a pupil free day with Term 2 commencing on Wednesday 1 May.
Bookings are made through the online system called Parent Teacher Online (PTO) and the link is on the SEQTA Engage Welcome page. The PTO booking system is now open for the parents of students for whom staff have specifically requested an interview. On Thursday 11 April the booking system will open for the entire school community.
The College welcomes all parental contact, however, we do request that where one teacher has the same student for multiple subjects that parents book only one time slot. In addition, it is not always necessary for parents to meet with all of their child’s teachers. It is up to parent judgement as to which teachers they meet, though the College believes it imperative that appointments are made if a teacher has specifically requested an interview. Teachers who have had recent contact with parents may have chosen not to request an interview. Parents may however, still choose to make an appointment with these teachers.

YEAR 11 PRENDIVILLE TIME
Elevate Education
The Year 11 students were surveyed and asked to identify how they would like to spend Prendiville Time. The two highest needs were – 'How to study effectively' and 'Stress Management'.
Last week during Prendiville Time, the Year 11 students spent valuable time with six dynamic, young presenters from Elevate Education. Topics covered by the presenters included - how to study, how to effectively use your time and the use of some specific study skills that data suggests students find useful. The feedback on the session was very positive both from staff and students and some students are keen to explore this topic further. Elevate Education surveyed the students and 98% of the students said the seminar was time well spent and they recommend it to others.

SCIENCE AT PRENDIVILLE
Year 7 Science Club Astronomy Night – 8th April 2019
Over fifty Year 7 students joined many of the College Science staff for our annual Astronomy Night with renowned Perth astronomer Richard Tonello. After a very interesting talk on the life and death of stars, the students had time to see such things as the moon, the Orion nebula, the Jewel casket star formation and stars in the sky. Students also had time to sit around the campfire with Mr Devlin and hear an interesting talk of the aboriginal interpretation of the heavens.
A great night enjoyed by all. A special thanks to all the Science staff who came along and helped support the evening in various ways.
Prendiville Science USA Tour 2019 – April School Holidays.
USA, here we come !!
In a few days 18 of our Year 10 and 11 students plus three staff members fly off on their 14 day trip to the east coast of the USA visiting NASA, Orlando and then onto Washington on our second Science tour. We wish the group all the best on this fantastic experience. A special thanks to Tour Coordinator, Mr Michael Van Der Kwast and Science staff members, Mrs Margarita Tranquille and Mrs Marie Jovanoski, for their hard work organising the tour over the last couple of years.
We wish the tour group all the best.

MATHEMATICS
After School Mathematics Help
The College offers an extra afternoon of assistance to students who would like extra help in mathematics. A gentle reminder that these sessions are not designed as tutoring sessions for students or for students to receive extra work on top of their set homework and classwork. Staff are available at this time to assist students with any problems or concerns they are having with their mathematics class work and/or homework and to answer any questions students may have. It is an expectation that students who attend these help sessions do so with the intention to complete mathematics work and respect that many students using these sessions would like to work in an environment that is conducive to study.
A reminder that the College After School Mathematics Help is not available in the final week of term and the first week of term. These sessions will re-commence Thursday, Week 2 Term
Mathematics Methods and Specialist Help
Help sessions for students enrolled in ATAR Mathematics Methods or ATAR Mathematics Specialist are invited to attend help session on Tuesday mornings 7:30am - 8:30 with Miss Charles. These sessions will recommence Tuesday, Week 2 Term 2.

STUDENT ARTWORK ON DISPLAY AT THE ART GALLERY
Pulse Perspectives (formerly Year 12 Perspectives) is a showcase of the best work from Year 12 Visual Art students from across the state. Some of the most talented high school artists feature at the annual event, and we're thrilled to announce that Prendiville Catholic College is represented in the form of Sarah Janes' work, Deliverance. This excellent piece will be on display alongside forty-five other works at the Art Gallery of WA until July and is well worth a look if you're searching for an activity to do over the school holidays. Congratulations, Sarah! Knowing how much time and effort went into creating your work, we're thrilled that you were selected for this highly prestigious exhibition.

DA VINCI DECATHLON 2019
The Da Vinci Decathlon was held on Monday 3 April where a group of Year 7 and Year 8 Paideia (Gifted and Talented) students from Prendiville competed against over 20 schools from across the state. This is the second consecutive year for students from the College to participate in the academic challenge and students are growing in confidence as they meet the demands of the challenge and engage in the fun that it brings as well.
Students participated in a diverse range of challenges from English, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Cartography, General Knowledge and Science, to Ideation and Engineering.
It was a very busy and exciting day of competitions in which the students have to allocate their time and resources accordingly in order to complete each challenging task within a set time. Students are to be congratulated on their overall participation and effort. WELL DONE!!!

INTERHOUSE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
The Interhouse Athletics Carnival is coming up really soon – 9th May (Year 7-9) and 10th of May (Year 10-12). The carnival is a compulsory event for students to attend and it is a great day for students to participate, have fun and perform to their best of their abilities.
The carnival is run in a tabloid format. Students will be in their Houses and Year groups and will move from one event to the next as a group throughout the day with rest periods at various times. Students will compete within that group at all events and have the option of competing in as many events as possible. Student’s results will be collated during the day and students will be ranked across the year group. The more events the students are involved in, the more points they will obtain individually and for their Houses. The results are also used to help us select our athletics team for the ACC Carnival in Term 3.
Information regarding the pre-carnival events have been sent out along with food orders for the carnival day for students who will need recess or lunch. Food orders need to be submitted to the Finance office by the 3rd May (Term 2, Week 1). Students will be allowed to go to the Café during their rest times to collect their food.
Lastly, as part of the athletics programme in Term 3, the PE Department along with specialist coaches from Athletics WA will be running training sessions to better prepare our team for the ACC Carnival. Students will be invited to come regardless of ability and it will be great opportunity to learn or improve their skills. A direqt message will be sent out regarding Athletics training late in Term 2.

PRENDIVILLE VOLLEYBALL
WA Beach Volleyball Schools Cup
Prendiville was once again represented strongly at the Term 1 WA Beach Volleyball Schools Cup with eight teams ranging from Year 9 to Year 12 playing. This competition was held on a beautiful day at City Beach and provided the students with an opportunity to develop their Volleyball skills against players from throughout the state. Four of the teams made the finals of their divisions with the Year 9 Girls and Year 12 Girls both finishing 3rd. Well done to the Year 9 Boys and the Year 11 Boys on winning a silver medal in their respective divisions.
CAS Volleyball
Congratulations to both the Senior Girls and Senior Boys CAS Volleyball teams on finishing on top of the ladder after the regular season. This was the first time the girls team has finished first in the seven years of CAS Volleyball which is an even greater achievement considering a large majority of the team are in Year 11. Unfortunately the girls lost a close grand final to a very strong St Marks team 2-0. After going through the regular season undefeated, the boys team also came up against a strong St Marks team in the grand final. The boys came out firing in the first set and put St Marks on the back foot. They were never able to recover and the Prendiville boys ran out winners 2-0. Congratulations to the boys team who have now won the last two CAS Volleyball premierships.
Year 7 & 8 Volleyball
Volleyball training sessions are now being offered to Year 7 & 8 students for the first time in a number of years. This is a great opportunity for students to learn a different sport in an enjoyable environment. All students in Year 7 and Year 8 are invited no matter the skill level. Training sessions throughout Term 2 will be offered on Thursday afternoons from 3.30-4.30pm in the school gym. Please note that Volleyball is not a CAS sport for juniors and therefore students are still able to play CAS throughout Term 2.
WA Junior Volleyball League
Good luck to the Year 11 Girls Volleyball team who will be playing in the WA Junior Volleyball League each Friday night throughout Terms 2 and 3.
