Principal Corner

Greetings AES families,

As many of you may already know, I was of the building due to illness this week. Endless gratitude to the staff as well as the superintendent, Dr. Saunders, and assistant superintendent, Dr. Forest, for supporting AES in my absence. I am looking forward to being back next week, I have missed the students and staff so much.

A few reminders:

When Your Child is Going to Be Out

When your child is going to be absent, please let the front office know by 8:40 in the morning. You can either put their absence in Pickup Patrol (please list the reason why they are absent), give us a call at 603-588-6371 or send an email to sedwards@conval.edu. Automatic absence calls go out at 10:10am to parents of students who are absent but we have not been given the reason why. These students will be marked Unexcused as we don’t know why they are absent. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Layers as the weather changes

It's hard to believe, after a day with temperatures in the mid to high 60s that we need to consider snow and freezing temperatures. Students go outside for recess in the morning and mid-day and we will be outside as long as the temperature and windchill is above 10 degrees. In order to have children play outside safely, we need them dressed for the weather. We recognize many students come to school with heavier clothing or layers already, we need to make sure this is consistent for all children.

At times students push back, not wanting to wear the coat. We ask that children wear their coats if it is below 50 degrees. Please talk to them about this at home and we will at school as well. Consistency in messaging is critical and we greatly appreciate your support. Please feel free to contact me with any concerns and we can talk.

As the season changes, so do many of the children's sizes. Please feel free to bring gently used jackets or snow gear to school for others who may need it and if for any reason you need support to obtain cold weather clothing, please reach out to Sarah Edwards, Vicki Mellon or to me.

Thank you so much for teaming with us to keep all kids safe, warm and playing outdoors.

Please remember we only have two days of school next week, then off on Thanksgiving recess, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend ahead.

Dyslexia Law Dyslexia Law

Recently, the New Hampshire legislature passed a law, Screening and Intervention for Dyslexia and Related Disorders (RSA 200:59). This law went into effect on September 26, 2023, and it requires us to screen all kindergarten through third-grade students for the identification of potential indicators or risk factors of dyslexia and related disorders. Please know, the assessments we are asked to conduct are not tools to diagnose Dyslexia. Rather, they are screening tools meant to identify students who may be at risk and allow us to intervene with systematic and structured literacy interventions to help these students succeed.

As part of the beginning of the school year, students in grades K-3 in the Conval School District were administered grade-specific universal screening assessments by AIMSwebPlus. These assessments are designed to predict whether or not your student might struggle while learning how to read. By conducting these assessments, we ensure we are identifying and supporting students appropriately throughout the school year together. The District has been using AIMSweb assessments for many years, and these assessments meet the requirements of RSA 200:59.

If this applies you your student, a letter will be going home with your student on November 21, 2023

First Friends 2 - The Harris Center came in for a visit. The students learned all about black bears. Their parts, what they eat, and where they sleep for the winter.

Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, we finished our Brown Bear books. The students have been working very hard to illustrate their own individualized books to share with their families.

First Friends 1 loved our visit with Kara from the Harris Center! It was amazing to learn so much about black bears, especially how big their paws can be. We pretended to be bears for a walk in the woods behind the playground.

We’re having fun with turkey games and stories, and making something special to share with our families at Thanksgiving.

In Ms. Lawler’s class, we have been reading lots of Thanksgiving picture books and using them to practice important literacy skills. We have sequenced stories, identified characters and settings and have started to sound out words to do our own writing! This week we read The Perfect Thanksgiving and made hand turkeys to match the one in the story and we read Turkey Trouble and then disguised a turkey to keep it safe for Thanksgiving.

Grade 2 Grade 2

In second grade, we have been working hard on becoming masters in subtraction! Students have shown grit as they learn each step in double digit subtraction. We have also been practicing gratitude and writing about what we are grateful for each day! Great job!

Grade 4 Grade 4

In fourth grade we have been working hard!

In math, we have been learning 3 digit by 1 digit multiplication as well as 4 digit by 1 digit multiplication. Ask your 4th grader to show you all the ways they can solve an equation!

In literacy, we have been working on opinion writing. Fourth graders can come up with a topic sentence, three reasons, three pieces of evidence and a conclusion!

From Ms Gregg, School Counselor.

In weekly classroom counseling lessons this week, Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade students learned about recognizing emotions/feelings in ourselves and other people and reasons for particular feelings. Third Grade students discussed the fact that feelings vary in intensity, depending on the situation and what else is happening in our lives. The intensity of our feelings does not always match the size of the problem. Fourth Grade students continued to learn about the brain and the importance of balancing the emotive and logic centers of the brain.
