Carmela Full of Wishes Theater Trip Carmela Full of Wishes Theater Trip

Thank you so much to our Connors PTO for sponsoring this week’s exciting schoolwide field trip to see a live performance of “Carmela Full of Wishes” at the Growing Stage in Netcong, NJ! The show was an incredible opportunity for all K-5 students to be exposed to live theatre, and the students had an amazing time! For some of them, this was the first time they experienced a live theatre production and it was such a wonderful experience for all! Funds were raised by the PTO to sponsor this trip through raffles (including a raffle dating back to pre-pandemic that we’ve been waiting to use!) and family donations – thank you so much for your support of this effort!

Walmart Women in Tech Presentation for 2nd graders Walmart Women in Tech Presentation for 2nd graders

On February 8th, 2nd graders at Connors had a special visit from a project manager at Walmart named Ms. Farese as part of their K-12 Outreach Program. She taught us about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). We also learned how STEM relates to her job at Walmart by learning about the supply chain - going from the suppliers, moving to the store or warehouse, and eventually getting to the customers. After learning how STEM is something that we can find in different parts of our lives, Ms. Farese then presented us with the following materials: sugar cubes, toothpicks, frosting, and mini marshmallows. We were told that we needed to come up with a way to design an igloo using only these materials. We couldn't have more than 5 sugar cubes, a scoop of frosting, a handful of mini marshmallows, and 15 toothpicks. Before getting any materials, we had to come up with a plan of how we were going to build our igloo and which materials we wanted. After coming up with a plan, we were given our materials and went straight to work. When our igloo creation was complete, we discussed what we would have done differently, given another opportunity to create an igloo. We had such an amazing time learning about STEM with Ms. Farese!

The Reading Specialist Corner The Reading Specialist Corner

The Hoboken Public School District is proud to have a certified Reading Specialist in each of our three elementary schools and Hoboken Middle School. Teaching children to read requires that every child receives excellent reading instruction and that children who are experiencing reading difficulties receive early intervention and additional instruction from professionals specifically prepared to teach them. The role of the district Reading Specialist is to provide research-based, small group reading instruction using the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education’s (IMSE) Orton-Gillingham (OG) methodology. The purpose of the Reading Specialist Corner is to provide families with at-home literacy tips to ensure strong home-school partnerships. This week, the Reading Specialist Team is excited to share Phonemic Awareness activities from the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education for you to try at home .

What is Phonemic Awareness?

Phonemic awareness is the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words and is a strong predictor of future reading success. A ‘phoneme,’ is the smallest sound unit in a language. The English language has 44 phonemes. The beauty of developing a child’s phonemic awareness is that no manipulatives are necessary. This skill can be practiced “in the dark”; all you need are your “listening ears” and the sound of your voice.

Phonemic Awareness Activity for Students in Kindergarten through Second Grade:

High Five: Rhyming Activity

Rhyming words have the same ending sound.

  • Step 1: Say a word to your child. For example, cat.

  • Step 2: Have your child say a rhyming word (i.e bat, mat, sat). As your child shares rhyming words, have them put a finger up for each one.

  • Step 3: Once 5 rhyming words have been shared, give your child a high five.

  • Step 4: Continue to practice rhymes with new words by repeating steps 1 through 3.

Phonemic Awareness Activity for students in Third through Eighth Grade:

Sound Cuts: Phoneme Deletion Activity

A ‘phoneme,’ is the smallest sound unit in a language

  • Step 1: Say a word to your child. For example, start.

  • Step 2: Tell your child all of the sounds in the word. For example, /s/ /t/ /a/ /r/ /t/.

  • Step 3: Ask your child to “cut” the final sound from the word (/t/) and then tell you the new word, star.

  • Step 4: Continue to practice phoneme deletion with new words by repeating steps 1 through 3.

Math: This week in math we started a new unit called Build a Block, Build a Wall. This geometry unit focuses on 3D shapes. Students have been learning about all different 3D shapes. They have been going on shape hunts around the classroom and the school. Students have been creating, identifying, describing, comparing, and building 3D shapes in class! They have been exploring 3D blocks with partners and identifying the faces they find.

ELA: This week's essential question was, "What kind of things grow on a farm?" Kindergarteners listened to the informational text An Orange in January and retold the story by identifying one important fact and one interesting fact from the story. Kindergarteners also did a phenomenal job reading the story Ron With Red; we were so impressed with their reading fluency and sounding out their words; way to go, KOALAfied Kindergarteners! This week's letters were Ff and Rr, and our phonics focus was /f/ and /r/. The sight words of the week were he and with! We are so proud of our amazing Kindergarteners and look forward to a fun week of celebrating Valentine's Day and the 100th Day of school next week!

Social Studies: In Social Studies this week students are learning about Black History Month. We made a flip book that answers the following questions: when do we celebrate, why do we celebrate, and how do we celebrate. Each class is focusing on a different American visionary who is honored through Black History Month. The classes will be decorating their doors to honor these figures.

Science: Students learned about coding and algorithms. Kindergarteners learned that algorithms are codes to tell a computer what to do. Students coded various mystery pictures using the algorithm provided. They did a great job!

Math: Students are having so much fun learning in math workshop. This week students were introduced to a new math game called "10 Plus" where students use a deck of cards to add two numbers together, then coming up with a new 10 plus equation. Students are also working on tens and ones and becoming more familiar with higher numbers. Students continue to build on these skills using Math IXL and online Investigation games. In Unit 5, we will continue to engaged in new math games and take time to share our strategies we used during our end of lesson discussions. Great job first graders!

ELA: This week our essential question was, "How do we get our food?" We focused on rereading to make sure we fully understand the text and to help us find text evidence when answering comprehension questions. After reading our non-fiction books, we used a graphic organizer to sequence the order of events by using first, next, then, and last. Our phonics focus was on variant vowel spellings with digraphs: oo, u. We practiced this by sorting cards, reading our decodable books, and online Reading Wonders games. In grammar, we reviewed inflectional endings and contractions. Our red words this week were: after, buy, done, every, soon, work. In writing, we began our introductions for our informative writing piece. Next week we will begin writing about each subtopic and finishing our books with a closing. We can't wait to share them!

Social Studies: This week in Social Studies, the students continued their exploration of Black History Month, by diving deeper into the lives and legacies of significant figures. Mrs. Sheridan's class focused on Mary McLeod Bethune, while Ms. Vayda's class dedicated their efforts to Toni Morrison. Ms. Klag's class continued to learn about Ida B. Wells. The students examined various aspects of these individuals lives, including their birthplaces, educational backgrounds, and family lives. They wrote about their achievements and contributions to society. The students got creative when decorating the door.

ELA: This week our second graders worked on learning about expository texts. The essential question for this text set was "how does the Earth change?" Students continued to learn about the author's purpose and text features such as headings and bold print. Students read the story "Into the Sea" and learned about how erosion affects communities. Students used context clues to identify words or information they did not know. The phonics focus for the week was r-controlled vowels. Second graders have been working super hard on their realistic fiction stories and can't wait to start writing their conclusions and editing!

Math: This week in Math the students continued to explore solving multiplication and division word problems. The students also were able to use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division while completing multi-step word problems. This was a great challenge the students enjoyed taking on. By practicing our skills, we are getting closer to mastering our facts for both multiplication and division.

ELA: This week, the third graders were excited to finish our third core novel, Who Was Coretta Scott King? by Gail Herman. They worked collaboratively to reflect on the text, the author’s purpose, and the main idea in order to create posters that represent Coretta’s beliefs, traits, and legacy. Additionally, the students began using all they learned about Coretta to create their own “Histogram” page from her perspective. Through the culmination of this core novel, the students reviewed many of the skills they practiced throughout this unit. They used these skills to engage in Review Centers, and finished the weej by completing their Unit 3 Wonders assessment. They are looking forward to starting the next unit soon!

Social Studies: This week third graders celebrated Black History Month, learning about its significance and honoring African American visionaries who have had a significant impact on history and life today. Each third class was assigned a visionary to research and create a visual representation of that individual's life and legacy. Ms. Gillen's class explored the courageous life of Rosa Parks, Ms. Schmidt's class learned all about Mae C. Jemison's extraordinary contributions to science, and Ms. Hall's class learned about the powerful Maya Angelou. These displays can be enjoyed and seen on our classroom doors!

Third Grade Thrills: This week students visited the Growing Stage Children's Theatre to see their production of Carmela Full of Wishes! Third graders had an amazing experience seeing the actors and actresses portray a story of connection, family, and community. A special thank you to the PTO for helping make this experience possible!

Science: Third graders worked hard this week. Students learned about various African American scientists. Students worked on their African American scientist research report in groups. Each group picked an African American scientist to research and completed the slide template that was created. Each student was graded according to the rubric provided. To end the week students completed their mid year assessment. I am so proud to see how much students have grown and learned from the first half of the year.

Music with Mr. Azzarto Music with Mr. Azzarto

Hi Connors Families,

The week of February 5th was filled with plenty of singing and a little poem rapping.

In Ms. Garcia’s class we had a little late Groundhog Day celebration. When a holiday comes around we sing various songs to celebrate the holiday and Groundhog Day was no exception. The students love to sing holiday songs, so “Shadow Free” was the one we chose for this holiday. Yes, they heard that we are going to have an early spring. Here is Josie with the lyrics and Chrisette with her ukulele singing “Shadow Free”!

In the 4th grade the students used the treble clef to fill in the missing letters to a poem about the winter season. They learned that poems are a lot like rap lyrics. After they finished the worksheet, we used the poem as a rap song. They also learned that rap music is a lot like what the Beatniks from the 1950’s did when they were reciting their poems and radio DJs did while they were introducing songs. Rap music can be traced back to many different art and media forms and reading poems is one of them. Here is Sydney, Khloe, and Lucas beatboxing and rapping the winter poem!

Mandarin with Ms. Ni Mandarin with Ms. Ni

This week in Mandarin we made lanterns and practiced our Chinese zodiac animals in Bingo. The Chinese New Year or Spring Festival (春节)kicks off tomorrow with the New Year’s Eve dinner (年夜饭). Saturday, February 10, officially marks the beginning of the year of the dragon. 新年快乐!
