A Message from Your Principal Team
Dear Washington Families,
School is in full swing, and our 3rd–5th grade students recently attended an assembly showcasing the exciting afterschool activities available for the rest of the year. Each student received an interest and permission form to take home.
We’re proud to offer five engaging afterschool programs this session, running every Tuesday and Wednesday from after school until 4:00 p.m., starting October 21st, 2025.
This session’s clubs include:
-
Danza Azteca (Grades 3–5)
-
SMILE Club (Grades 4–5, Tuesdays Only)
-
Oregon Battle of the Books – OBOB (Grades 4–5)
Pickleball Club - (Grades 3-5)
-
Choir Club (Grades 3–5)
Some activities may require additional permission slips. Please talk with your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader about which club they’d like to join! More details about each program are listed below.
Afterschool activities offer wonderful opportunities for students to explore new interests, build friendships, and develop skills beyond the classroom. They help strengthen teamwork, confidence, and responsibility—while giving students a safe, supervised space to grow and learn.
It truly takes a village to raise a child. Thank you to our families and staff for your continued support and commitment to building a strong Washington Elementary community.
Go Eagles! 🦅
Warmly,
Alfredo Belanger, Principal
Antonio Ramos, Asst. Principal

Eagle Feathers
What are Eagle Feathers?
In Washington, we use eagle feathers as recognition for school-wide Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS) students. Students are recognized when a staff member observes that the student is following our school expectations. In Washington, students and staff strive to be safe, respectful, and responsible every school day.
Students have the opportunity to exchange these eagle feathers for small prizes at the eagle feather store. The student store is currently open every Monday morning from 7:30 to 7:55 right outside the gym and cafeteria.
Unity day October 22nd
Unity Day is National Bullying Prevention Month's flagship event, celebrated in October. The day calls on all of us to unite in kindness, inclusion, and courage to prevent bullying wherever it may occur. The day places particular emphasis on bullying in schools and online spaces. Many children are bullied in these spaces, and this is what the day aims to eradicate. On average, one in five students between twelve and eighteen are bullied. This number is unacceptable, and Unity Day seeks to bring it down to zero.
🎨 Washington Elementary Student Art on Display! 🎨
We’re thrilled to invite our families to visit The Bungalow Theater starting October 10th, where our students’ incredible artwork will be on display!
Our 4th and 5th graders have designed and drawn their own creative bridges, our 2nd and 3rd graders explored color and shape through abstract art inspired by Wassily Kandinsky, and our Kindergarten and 1st graders created vibrant melted plate sculptures in the style of Dale Chihuly—currently brightening our library windows!
Come celebrate our young artists and their amazing creativity on display at the Bungalow Theater!
Educational Equity Advisory Committee
Educational Equity Advisory Committees are meant to help school leaders identify what helps or hinders the success of students who Oregon’s educational systems have historically excluded, impacted, marginalized, or underserved. They are intended to advise superintendents on the educational impacts of policy decisions, the larger district-wide climate, issues impacting underserved student groups, and additional topics necessary to fully elevate student experience.

Safety
Message from WSD
Dear Woodburn Community,
We learned of a targeted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation that led to a parent of a child in our schools being taken and the potential exists that there could be more situations like this in the future. At times like these it’s important that we maintain our commitment to safe and respectful learning environments where all of our students, staff, and families feel welcome and a sense of belonging.
We support and uphold Oregon's "Sanctuary Laws," under which no public resources, including school employees, may be used to assist with federal immigration enforcement actions. Immigration officials will not be allowed access to any part of a school building beyond the school office, and, absent a judicial order, Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) officials do not have the authority to remove a student from school. Our district does not collect information about immigration status, and if student records are requested, they will not be provided without a judicial subpoena. Student records are protected under federal and state law.
Family Resources - Here you’ll find family preparedness resources and videos as well as information about what our schools do and don’t do related to ICE and other resources. Each school has staff trained to support families with completing a family preparedness packet upon request. Please contact your school principal for support.
Thank you for your commitment to maintaining a safe and welcoming school culture and for helping us create a kind, supportive environment where every student can be engaged, inspired, and prepared.
