NorthropNewsletterMay 2026

Dear Northrop Families,

It's hard to believe that we're in the last month of the year! It has been such a great school year and

we have enjoyed spending it with your student(s), watching them grow and learn! May is an

incredibly busy month, so please look carefully at the events listed below. A few important notes:

Spring concerts for 1st, 3rd, and 5th grades will be held on May 19th. Please see the letter below for specific times and additional information.

Field Day Info

Field Day will be held on Thursday, May 21st. Only adults who have signed up via the PTO sign up

genius are able to help on that day.

Please make sure your child brings the following:

  • Water bottle
  • Loose-fitting clothes
  • Running shoes (no Crocs or flip-flops)
  • A great attitude!

Grade Level Shirt Colors. We encourage students to wear a shirt that matches their grade level color.

  • Kindergarten: White
  • 1st Grade: Red
  • 2nd Grade: Green
  • 3rd Grade: Yellow
  • 4th Grade: Gray
  • 5th Grade: Blue

This is optional, but it helps us quickly identify groups during activities, makes sorting teams easier, and helps students find their class again if they need to step away (for example, to use the restroom)

A Few Helpful Reminders

  • Please label water bottles and other personal items. Field Day tends to produce a lot of “lost and found” water bottles, and labeling helps prevent them from getting mixed up or accidentally shared.

  • Apply sunscreen before school so students are protected while we’re outside enjoying the day.

As a culmination to their work researching and writing about a different culture, 3rd graders made a "float" to represent their learning. The whole school got to enjoy a Culture Parade as our 3rd graders walked through the halls and shared their work!

5th graders have been working with community partners all year to explore career options and help to solve real world problems. They celebrated a culmination of their work by inviting the community partners in to share their learning, their solutions to the problems they were given, and practice their greeting, speaking, and listening skills. It was a great way to celebrate all of the hard work and thank our community partners!

We had some truly creative Arbor Day project submissions this year and it was very difficult to narrow it down to just 4 winners! Congratulations to Avery, Raelynn, Liam, and Haylee, who were selected to represent Northrop at the Kiwanis Luncheon at Williams on the Lake. They did a wonderful job!

Social Emotional Learning Social Emotional Learning

As part of our work to support students with their social and emotional development, we teach lessons daily that cover a variety of skills. These lessons give students words to describe their feelings and strategies to use when they're feeling upset. Not only does it help the individual students when needed, but it also builds the classroom community and helps everyone understand how to handle things when they don't go as expected.

During the month of April, students reviewed zones of regulation and practiced some new relaxation and breathing techniques. A few examples are below:

wielguss@medinabees.org (330) 636-4607

I am at Northrop on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays each week.

As an elementary school counselor, I am committed to supporting the social and emotional needs of our students and the families of the students we serve. In addition, I am also committed to supporting our staff here at school to ensure that we are meeting the individual needs of each student during the school day. By addressing social and emotional needs as well as academics, we work together to increase learning and academic growth for each student here at Eliza Northrop and Waite Elementary Schools. As a school counselor, my typical services include small groups and/or individual meetings with students, as well as in the whole group, which is often in a classroom setting. I teach students new skills that can assist them with positive and appropriate emotional expression as well as in learning coping skills and the use of coping tools.
