Bataan Memorial Death March
Los Alamos High School seniors Matthew Haight and Noah Banks participated in the 37th annual Bataan Memorial Death March held on March 21, 2026, at the White Sands Missile Range near Las Cruces, New Mexico.
This is a memorial endurance march/marathon that honors American and Filipino soldiers who suffered during the Bataan Death March of World War II. This event is not a typical race—it’s closer to a ruck march/endurance challenge. Participants include civilians, military personnel, and teams from around the world. While the total number of participants has not been publicized, the event usually sees between 6,000 and 7,000 participants. Because of the extreme heat this year, the organizers limited the distance of the march to 15.8 miles, which Matt and Noah completed in 3 hours and 36 minutes, making them among the early finishers (average time to complete this distance is 4.5-5.
Signed copies of his book of poems were given to the LAMS and LAHS librarians.

Safe Homes, Safe Communities: DEA Drug Take-Back Day
Families are encouraged to take part in the upcoming DEA Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Los Alamos Police Department (North Parking Lot, off Central Avenue). This convenient drive-through event provides a safe way to dispose of unused or expired prescription medications. (Please note: sharps and aerosols will not be accepted; supplies will be available to dispose of liquids and creams.
Participating in Drug Take-Back Day is a simple step that makes a meaningful difference. Most teens who misuse prescription medications report getting them from home or from friends and family. By safely disposing of unused medications, families help reduce access, lower the risk of accidental poisoning or misuse, and model healthy, responsible behaviors.
Across our community, families are taking proactive steps to keep their homes safe—this event is one more way to support those positive norms. Creating safe environments, maintaining open communication, and limiting access to potentially harmful substances are all key protective factors that help youth make healthy choices.
If you are unable to attend on April 25, a permanent drop box is available inside the Los Alamos Police Department year-round.
For questions, please contact Evidence Cpl. Peter Rogahn at 505-663-1888.
Panorama Survey
Please remember to complete the Panorama Survey which was sent out recently. It takes about 15 minutes. Helping students do their best in school requires a team effort! Parents, students, and schools all play important roles in this process. To help us learn how to make your child's schooling experience as positive and beneficial as possible, please give us your honest, thoughtful responses. Students and staff across Los Alamos Public Schools are participating in this survey and we seek 100% participation so that all voices are heard.
