November Update
Class photo: School Spirit - Color Day
Supporting our students with independence:
One of our big focuses the past few weeks has been around growth mindset and encouraging independence. Many students are afraid to try work independently because they are afraid of getting the wrong answer. Just because we don't know something YET, doesn't mean we can't learn it. Mistakes help us to grow and become better learners!
Attendance:
We did it again! The 5/6 classroom has achieved perfect attendance for 91% of the school days in October. The students will be able to choose an "extra special" time as a reward.
Reminder - Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for Thursday, December 5th from 12:30-5:45. Meetings are 15 minute slots and can be held in-person or over the phone. Many families signed up during Open House, but if you haven't signed up yet, please email me so we can find you a time slot. I look forward to meeting with you all and sharing all of the incredible things your student has learned so far this year!
Reading Nook
Wit and Wisdom:
This researched based curriculum helps students become strong with reading comprehension and vocabulary. We will beginning our new module, Myth Making. In this module, students will discover myths and stories that communicate cultural beliefs and values. Students analyze stories from the Greeks, Romans, and Native Americans - as well as from contemporary America. Students will study common themes in these stories to help teach us about the human experience across cultures.
Novel Study:
Our next novel study will be included with our Wit and Wisdom module. We will start Walk Two Moons in lesson 15.
Reading Rotations:
Students have been working hard with their interactive vocabulary curriculum, iReady reading lessons, and a new figurative language unit!
Read Aloud:
We are almost done with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. After completing the read aloud, we will watch the movie, use a graphic organizer to take notes, and write a compare/contrast essay!
Math
Science/Social Studies
Social Studies:
Our next unit in social studies will focus on the earliest civilizations and how geography decided where the earliest people settled down.
Science:
We are currently using an interactive notebook to help us determine the difference between physical and chemical properties of matter. We will get to be hands-on with some experiments and put our knowledge to the test!
