Principal's Notes Principal's Notes

This first full week of school was a busy one! We started with the bus evacuation drill on Monday morning. All students heard from the bus drivers what to do in case of an emergency before heading into their classrooms to start the day. Preschool students started class on Tuesday with Miss Anne and had so much fun meeting new friends. All K-5 classes recognized Constitution Day with a focused social studies lesson on Thursday. We are off to a great start thanks to our amazing students, our supportive families, and our talented teachers and staff!

I sent home an urgent email yesterday reminding families that all changes to dismissals must be entered in Pick Up Patrol (PUP). The Norwell Recreation programs, the YMCA, Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts, etc are all completely separate programs from the Norwell Schools. We are not gathering their student enrollment lists and cross referencing those lists with Pick Up Patrol. Parents/Caregivers are the only ones that can relay this information to Cole School through Pick Up Patrol. Parents/Caregivers can select:

Absent - Include reason for absence

Early Dismissal - Include reason and person picking up

Pick Up (Car Loop) - Name of person picking up

Walker - Walkers are dismissed to the front of the building

Bus - If not normal route, include destination. Students may only ride the bus they have been assigned to. (ex. - Student rides bus 7 but is getting off with a friend two stops later)

YMCA - Must be pre-registered

School Activity/Rec Program - Enter the name of the School Activity or Rec Program (ex. Hands in Clay, Girl Scouts, etc)

Other - Please enter more information (ex. - Student is riding bike to and from school)

Parent/Student Handbook Reminder:

Electronic Devices

Using personal electronic devices including all smart devices is not permissible during the school day

(including bus rides to and from school). If brought to school, all personal electronic devices including all smart devices must be turned off and kept inside their backpack. The school will not be responsible in the event that the device is lost, stolen, or damaged while on school property.

Unauthorized student use of electronic devices during the school day will result in the device being

confiscated. The device will be returned to the student and/or the parent after a conference with an

administrator. In the event that a parent deems it necessary to contact their child during the school day, they may do so by contacting the main office directly.

Putting the device into SMART MODE and wearing the device is not allowed. It must still be in the backpack and turned off for the length of the school day.

Many thanks to the PTO for funding a new climber that will placed where the tire swing is on the playground. Installation will take place on Saturday, September 26th.

Norwell CARES Day is taking place on Thursday, September 24th (raindate, 9/25). This is a day when the students at Norwell High School connect with the community in a variety of ways. We look forward to welcoming the juniors to Cole School on that day to work with classrooms and the sophomores to complete a few projects around the building.

  • Ninth-grade students and peer leaders will participate in our Advisory Kick-Off Day, which helps freshmen transition to high school by fostering connections with their homeroom peers and teacher.
  • Tenth-grade students will be involved in our Tens Around Town program, engaging in service projects at prearranged locations throughout Norwell.
  • Eleventh-grade students will take part in our Juniors to Juniors program, spending the day building relationships with elementary students at both Cole and Vinal Schools.
  • Twelfth-grade students will host the Senior to Senior program, creating a carnival-style atmosphere here at the high school.

Mark you calendars for the upcoming Open House/Curriculum Night on Thursday, September 24th. Students and families are welcome to come visit the classroom and specialist areas, meet the teachers, learn more about the grade level curriculum, and see the classroom. This year, please join us in the gym for the first 10 minutes to hear important information from a School Committee representative.

  • 5:00-5:10 Grades 1 and 2 Families Convene in the Gym for School Committee Speaker

  • 5:10-5:45 Open House/Curriculum Night in 1st and 2nd Grade Classrooms

  • 6:15-6:25 Grades 3-5 Families Convene in the Gym for School Committee Speaker

  • 6:25-7:00 Open House/Curriculum Night in 3rd-5th Grade Classrooms

We will be reviewing expected behaviors with the students before Open House/Curriculum Night, but please also preview the expected behaviors with your children before entering the building:

1. Children MUST stay with their family for the duration of the event (no running through halls)

2. Visit your child's current classroom and specialists only so previous year's teachers can focus on their new students and families

We look forward to having a handful of college students from both Stonehill College and Bridgewater State University observing in classrooms this fall. Supporting student teachers helps us keep the student teacher to teacher pipeline strong for the next generation of educators. We are so thankful that our teachers are opening their classrooms to college students for this reason.

We had a very successful parent book group two years ago when we read The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. We have decided to host another parent book group this year. Please see the invitation below and RSVP if you'd like to join me in discussing Isabelle Hau's book, Love to Learn.

Magnificent Meerkats Magnificent Meerkats

Check out the first group of Magnificent Meerkats for the 2026-2027 school year. Be sure to ask these students why they were nominated. Some of the reasons for nominations include:

  • including all students in play at recess
  • helping keep the classroom space organized
  • showing a positive attitude and smile each day
Ms. Dole, our new 4th grade teacher, was also nominated for being nice to students, playing fun games in class, and being a very positive person! Way to go, Magnificent Meerkats!

This week, students started to learn about Growth Mindset and Goal Setting in Second Step lessons. You can read more about what your students are learning and find questions to ask them at home, by opening the Second Step Home Links on my website. Also, in the next few weeks, students and teachers will complete SAEBRS screeners, which provides us a snapshot of how the kids are feeling about themselves socially, academically, and emotionally at school. We'll use those data to form small groups for social-emotional skill building. Please reach out with any questions or if your student needs support- anne.walsh@norwellschools.org
