Strategic Plan Update
Thank you to everyone who participated in the online surveys for the strategic plan. We have received more than 500 responses that our Steering Team will start reviewing this month. We will use your feedback to develop the foundation of our plan that include identifying core values and a vision for the student experience in Mount Baker. In next month's newsletter we will be able to share examples of that work toward the new strategic plan. We will also begin updating the Strategic Plan page on the district website.
School Board Student Representatives
Superintendent Update
This month marks the start of our Steering Team work to develop the Strategic Plan. In addition to that work, we have three subcommittees to guide some important decisions that are open to students, staff, and community members:
- Calendar Committee: This group will make a recommendation about the calendar for next school year. There are two ways that you can participate.
- Give feedback in the 2026-27 Family Calendar Survey.
- Be part of the in-person committee that will meet on Feb. 19 from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m.. This committee will include both staff and parents. Please email Bridget Rossman at brossman@mtbaker.wednet.edu for more information and to sign up.
- Cell Phone Policy Work Group: Our student representatives will be helping me organize this group so that we can discuss possible changes to our district cell phone policy. This work will likely be in April, and we will update students, staff, and parents with more details soon.
- Budget Advisory Committee: This group will meet to discuss budget priorities to help guide us in making decisions about the 2026-27 budget. We are planning at least two meetings on April 2 and 30 from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. If you would like to be part of these meetings, please email me directly at jschenck@mtbaker.wednet.edu.

MBHS Teacher Awarded with Distinguished Citizen Award
Last month, the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office awarded MBHS Teacher Justin Thibault with a Distinguished Citizen Award. This was in recognition for his quick actions and work with Deputy Julie Baker to save the life of Dave Zollner, who was at the high school track last fall when he experienced a cardiac emergency. We are very proud of Mr. Thibault and very thankful that Mr. Zollner is doing well!
