Sarah Engler Honored in Catalyst for Educational Change
Mercer School’s own science teacher, Sarah Engler, has been nationally recognized for her outstanding contributions to education. She was recently named an Educator Appreciation Honoree by Catalyst for Educational Change, a prestigious honor awarded to a select group of educators across the country who demonstrate exceptional commitment to student learning and innovation.
This recognition is well deserved ! Mrs. Engler has led the way in implementing project-based learning, creating dynamic and engaging experiences that connect students with real-world challenges and their local community. Whether guiding students through environmental science projects showcased at the North Lakeland Discovery Center or mentoring the Science Club as they bring inventions to life, her teaching goes far beyond the textbook.
Through her leadership, students are not only gaining knowledge—they are developing skills in critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving. Her classroom has become a hub of curiosity and creativity, and her impact reaches well beyond school walls.
"We are incredibly proud of Mrs. Engler,” said District Administrator Renae McMurray. “This honor reflects the dedication, innovation, and passion she brings to her students every day. She is a true catalyst for educational change in our district and beyond.”
Congratulations to Sarah Engler on this well-earned recognition!
Mercer School Environmental Science Showcase
On May 15, students from Mrs. Engler’s Environmental Science class showcased their project-based learning during a special community presentation at the North Lakeland Discovery Center. From 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the students shared research and solutions on environmental topics they had explored throughout the semester.
The rest of the school visited the Discovery Center to support their peers and learn from the engaging, student-led presentations. This event is a powerful example of real-world learning in action, where students tackle meaningful environmental issues and share their findings with an authentic audience.
Projects included:
-
Laken Walker – Promoting youth engagement in outdoor activities
-
Cody Augustiniak– Exploring the connection between forestry and hunting
-
Dylan Eith– Educating others about Wisconsin snakes and dispelling common fears
-
Kaylee Powers– Offering strategies to protect local turtle populations
-
Irene Moreno Zapico– Designing backyard habitats to support wildlife such as salamanders
Following the presentations, Laken and Cody led a hands-on fishing demonstration—complete with a few quick catches and releases—that further connected classroom learning with outdoor experiences.
These projects highlight how students are applying scientific thinking, research, and communication skills to address real environmental topics that matter to our region. Bravo to Mrs. Engler and her students for their hard work and meaningful contributions to our community!
Students enjoy the props as Cody presents "Logging Effects on Hunting"
Irene shares how to create a "Wildlife Corner"
Laken encourages youth to get involved in the outdoors through hunting and fishing.

Spring Art Show in the School Forest
On Tuesday, May 13, students and staff gathered in the school forest for a one-of-a-kind art experience during this year’s Spring Art Show. With the theme “Easter Eggs,” student-created artworks were cleverly hidden throughout the forest, inviting attendees to explore, reflect, and discover the hidden meanings behind each piece.
Armed with maps, and clues left along the trail (a rendering of a fried egg marked the departure from the trail) visitors searched for the artwork. Pieces included sculptures, ceramics, drawings, and graphic art. The forest was filled with conversation, laughter, and plenty of surprises. The event was not only a celebration of student talent and creativity, but also an opportunity to connect with nature and each other in a relaxed, joyful setting.
Mercer's art teacher, Mr. Griffin, created this opportunity for students to share their artwork with the community and showcase the school forest as an amazing backdrop. This event takes countless hours to put on and is definitely a labor of love. Everyone looks forward to the amazing art and time spent on the school forest trails. Although this is only the second year for the annual Art Show in the forest, it has already become a hallmark event for Mercer School.
Adding to the outdoor atmosphere, Miss Nancy served up brats and hot dogs that were grilled outside for lunch, while the Culinary Arts class treated everyone to fresh, homemade beignets—an instant crowd favorite.
The combination of art, nature, good food, and community made this event a memorable success. A big thank you to our art students, Mr. Griffin, staff, and everyone who helped bring this creative outdoor exhibit to life!

Support the Class of 2025
The Mercer Senior Class of 2025 is having a Flamingo Flocking Fundraiser to raise money for their trip to South Padre Island, TX!
For this fundraiser, people can donate to have a group of pink plastic flamingos placed on someone else's lawn as a surprise, essentially "flocking" their yard. Those who have been “flocked” will then have the option to "flock" a new yard (within Iron County) by donating. Flamingos are moved each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays until Graduation. If you are “flocked” you will receive a flyer from the seniors giving you further information and instructions!

Attendance Matters
For children and teens, attending school isn’t just about getting an education. It’s about developing their whole selves—emotionally, socially, and personally.
Attending school regularly and in person gives students the ability to follow daily routines, as well as connect with friends, peers, teachers, and others outside their family circle. They’re able to engage and interact, to use their brains and try new things. They can be part of a team. They have a purpose.
Help your child be their best self. Promote good attendance.

Building a Culture of Partnership
At Mercer School, we are committed to fostering a culture where partnerships, belonging, and positive relationships thrive. That’s why we are proud to highlight "Connections: Linking Community and Curriculum", a vital initiative aligned with our strategic priority of Culture and Community.
The goal of this initiative is simple yet powerful: to bring together students, staff, families, and community members to create a supportive and welcoming environment. By encouraging active participation from all stakeholders, we are working to achieve a shared vision of success that benefits everyone.
Through "Connections," we aim to:
- Build strong partnerships with community organizations, businesses, and families.
- Foster positive relationships within the school and beyond.
- Ensure that all voices are heard and included in decision-making processes.
- Create opportunities where community expertise enriches classroom learning and vice versa.
This initiative is not just about collaboration—it’s about creating a culture where every student, staff member, and community partner feels valued and empowered to contribute to our shared vision. Together, we can build a brighter future by linking what we do in school with the resources and strengths of our community.
We invite you to join us on this journey. Whether by volunteering, sharing your expertise, or attending school events, your involvement makes a difference. Let’s work together to strengthen our connections and create lasting opportunities for our students and community!
The examples below highlight the many ways our school is building connections through partnerships and positive relationships. These efforts are part of our ongoing commitment to creating a supportive culture that benefits students, staff, and the broader community.
This week, we highlight the following Connections:
