Warhawk Culture - Uncommon Favor

I’ve been reading Uncommon Favor by Coach Dawn Staley, and it’s been both inspiring and affirming of the work we do together each day at Westerville Central. Staley’s story is one of resilience, leadership, and purpose—rooted in a determination to lift others up while always striving for excellence herself.

One of the most powerful ideas she shares is that greatness grows through gratitude and grit. She credits much of her success to the “uncommon favor” shown to her by others—coaches, teammates, and mentors who supported her along the way—and she honors that favor through her hard work, humility, and leadership.

That message connects beautifully to our Warhawk Blueprint and the values that guide us: being Better Together, showing pride in all we do by Owning It, and staying committed to Pursuing Excellence. Like Staley, we believe that we are all part of something bigger than ourselves—and when we support one another, we all rise higher.

As we move through the next few weeks, I encourage each of us—students, staff, and families—to think about what “uncommon favor” means in our own lives. Who has believed in you, encouraged you, or helped you along the way? And how can you share that same encouragement or kindness with someone else?

Let’s continue to show gratitude for those who have invested in us and demonstrate grit as we work toward our goals together. Thank you for the uncommon favor you bring to our Warhawk community every day.

WINGS UP !

Mrs. Sayre

Principal

🎇 Worth a Watch: (6 min interview from the TODAY Show)
Coach Dawn Staley recently shared her story and lessons from her book Uncommon Favor in a powerful interview here. Her message about gratitude, hard work, and lifting others up connects closely with our Warhawk Blueprint values. It’s an inspiring reminder that success grows when we use our talents to help others rise with us.

Our Warhawk Blueprint outlines what we believe, how we behave and outcomes we hope to achieve together at WCHS. These beliefs are our guidepost that provide alignment in all we do.

COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SENIORS

Every year individuals, organizations, and businesses come together to provide scholarships to our seniors. Please see timeline below:

  • Week of 11/10: A list of available scholarships will be communicated via email, Schoology and sent out via School Messenger. It will also be in Ms. Sayre's Weekly Family Update the following Sunday.

    • At this time, students should be identifying the scholarships they qualify for as well as collecting documents needed: digital copy of letters of recommendation (all students will need one), essays, resume, etc.

  • December 8: The online portal for the application will go live and the link will be communicated via email, Schoology and Ms. Sayre's Weekly Family Update.

    • Application will close on January 9, 2026 at 3pm.

ALL college-bound students should plan to apply. Scholarships are not just based on GPA. Scholarships also focus on memorials-losing a loved one, community service, sports/activities, careers (engineering, education, etc), elementary and middle schools attended, etc.

School Clinic

Happy Fall Warhawk Families!

‘Tis the (cold and flu) Season…

Is your child not feeling their best? When they’re sick, the best way to recover -and protect others- is to rest at home. Students can return to school once fever free for 24 hours and symptoms have improved. Our school clinics follow all Ohio Department of Health guidelines to help manage and prevent the spread of illnesses and communicable diseases. Please let me know if your child is diagnosed with any contagious condition. We report these to our local health departments in accordance with public health requirements.

If your student becomes ill at school…

Please remind your student to check in with the clinic if they are not feeling well. We will evaluate their symptoms and then notify you directly if needed. Take a moment to review your child’s emergency contacts listed in Powerschool and make sure it is up to date. This allows someone other than you to pick up your child if you are not able to. If you need to add anyone to the list or make any changes, contact our guidance secretary, Carrie Shaffer, at shafferc@westerville.k12.oh.us.

Parents of Juniors:

Please start planning to get your student the REQUIRED Meningitis MCV4 booster before their senior year next fall. These can be done at your child’s annual well visit, local health departments, pharmacies, or health clinics. I am happy to help with scheduling if needed!
