What's Cookin' At Your House?

By Mrs. Houchens, Editor

eLearning is what's cookin' at homes throughout Manchester this spring. On Tuesdays through Thursdays, MES students work via google meetings with teachers and instructional aids to finish up the 2019-20 school year. Daily food distribution at school is still available to any parents/guardians. Pick up Is between 11AM and 1 PM. Although many things have changed for our students, many things remain the same.

  • The Shiner Times is still posting your pictures, please do the Spirit Challenge so we can remember who you are!
  • MES students are still having birthdays; make sure you read to the end to see how a certain someone celebrated his.
  • MES friends are still caring about each other, they are just getting together in new ways and making new friends through social media; check out the great Minecraft article to see some options.
  • Students are still making time to do art, music, and gym classes; and, they are still finding their voices through the things they love to do most.

Sixth Graders Have Found Their Voice!

By Davin Hudnall

LA,la,la,la,laaaaa! Habit 8 is all about finding your voice. So what does this mean exactly? It is about figuring out who and what you want to be in life and focusing your efforts on becoming that to the best of your ability. That means you join clubs, read books, and take classes that help you to do it.

In my case, finding my voice means following my dreams to become a mechanical engineer. I have always enjoyed figuring out how things work and how to make things. I also love anything having to do with cars. This year I joined the Robotics Club to see if I was on the right path. It definitely gave me the opportunity to find my voice as I created robots for specific challenges. What do you love doing?

“Congratulations, Mason, you have now graduated with a doctorate degree and a major in the engineering field.” Today, we are venturing into the minds of the human brain to find peoples’ passions. I have a passion for building things out of wood and making new things. I want to be an engineer. There are almost 2,000 jobs you can do in engineering! Finding your voice is all about you and what you want to be. But, you have to work for what you want. You are you and no one else. Don’t let anyone decide what you do. Now, go find your passion!

Let's Do Gym At Home

By Mason Hamlett

Don't forget Physical Education still counts! Each week students are expected to create a log of their exercise during the week....or for the day of their gym class. Each week, Mrs. Wheat asks for a different response. The first week she asked us to log the beginning and ending heart rate after an activity was completed. The second week, Mrs. Wheat asked the younger students to play games that were played in gym class, like tag games. They had to tell her the games they played. For the older students, Mrs. Wheat challenged them to complete the two minute plank challenge. They were to do the challenge for two weeks and hold the plank for two minutes.(See Gracie's picture above.) Next, students were asked to assess themselves in different activities and then submit their lessons to Mrs. Wheat's email. It can be through google docs share, write it out in an email, or send a picture; whatever is easiest for them. Pictured here, the Shiner Times staff shows you how! (Jessica does a sit-up perfectly.)

LIBRARY CORNER LIBRARY CORNER

Info from Library

By Jessica Wullenweber

Do you ever want to just curl up and read a book? Well, quarantine is the perfect opportunity. Reading is important for learning. Did you know that President Abraham Lincoln taught himself to become a lawyer? His education was obtained from reading an extraordinary amount of books. He didn’t attended a public school or go to college, but Lincoln retained a lifelong interest in learning. Though he never went to school, he still became the most successful president according to online poles. It was because he read so many books that he was so smart.

Thanks to Mrs.Wilhelm, you can still read books from our school library. You can contact her to arrange a pickup. Parents just need to fill out the google form, then they can pick up your books in the front lobby which is open Monday through Friday from 8:00- 2:00. The link to the form is also on Facebook and Class Dojo. Here is the link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdTpP-_0AvW7k3c5W5ikEjEIis5vxNbz-B25e5hTR6zQ6pkAw/viewform?usp=sf_link

Classrooms Have New Friends

By Davin Hudnall

It’s a Tweet, Tweet Life.. it’s a tweet, tweet life for us! Have you ever been responsible for a pet? A little furry pet perhaps? Try being responsible for 10 of them at once! Welcome to my furry little tweet-filled world.

I currently have 10 guinea pigs, 4 boys and 6 girls. They are very sweet and lovable and fun to watch when they play. They make little squeaks and tweets that let you know when they need something, like water, food, or simply a little attention. They purr like a cat when you pet them. They love to play tag, and they “popcorn” when they are happy, which just means they jump around rapidly like popcorn popping!

Two years ago I got my first guinea pig, Rece, for my birthday. A few months later, she had a baby boy named Reese Cup. Then, she had a boy named Oreo and a girl named M&M. Later, the girls had more babies, Whatchamacallit (boy), Reese Pieces (girl), Cookies and Cream (girl), Twinkie (girl), and the twins Kit and Kat (boy and girl). A few months ago, the girls all had babies again at the same time, so I donated those babies to the pet store.

Some of the things that you have to do in order to make sure your guinea pigs stay healthy include monitoring their water and food. Veterinarians recommend giving them vitamin water to help their immune systems. It is important to pay close attention to any changes in your guinea pig’s eating and drinking habits, as this could mean that they are getting sick. Guinea pigs’ health can go downhill rapidly, but if you see red flags early and get them treatment, they can live long happy lives! They are the best classroom friends I have ever had.

Beautiful tulips waved in the breeze in the back garden that Mrs. Steinmetz's class planted in the fall. These flowers will return each Spring! Hopefully, next school year you will be able to see them live!

MineCraft, your virtual real life.

By Kamden Blackburn

MineCraft, you all know what it is, what can happen, and it’s limits ... which doesn’t exist. This game can be played with friends where you build cities, farms, anything (check out Grain, a good builder on youtube). You can pick up redstone and make cool machines (check out MumboJumbo a great redstone engineer on youtube). Or, you can create a survival world and make a base, mine, plan, and much more! There are also servers, mods, and maps to download and explore! You can play on any device used for gaming, and even on your phone. If none of this sounds cool, maybe you should try PVP or Player versus Player. Many servers have games that feature combat. Games can include Bed Wars, Skywars, Factions, and many more! Builders can have fun on servers also. There are many games - too many to list, even with short examples. If you are ever bored of vanilla MineCraft, there are always mods, challenges, and maps to explore and use. If you need help, or need ideas and suggestions, my email is kblackburn1850@students.sdcsc.k12.in.us.
