Dear Parents and Carers,

As we reach the end of another academic year at St Bonaventure's, we pause to give heartfelt thanks to God for the many blessings we have received. This year has been filled with joyful moments and proud achievements, and also with challenges that have called upon our community to show resilience, compassion, and faith. Through it all, we have persevered with hope.

We hold in prayerful remembrance one of our Year 9 pupils who sadly passed away following a brief illness. His loss has deeply touched us all. We ask God to grant his parents, sisters, and friends comfort and peace during this painful time, and we commend his soul to God's eternal care.

Our pupils in Years 11 and 13 approached their exams with dedication and maturity, and we are proud of their efforts. As they now await their results, please continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers. We wish them every success as they embark on the next chapter—whether in further education, training, or the world of work.

This week on 15th of July, we celebrated the feast of our beloved patron St Bonaventure, a highlight in our spiritual calendar. The occasion was marked with a joyful celebration of faith at Mass, community activities, treats, and a meaningful retreat day for our Sixth Form students—an opportunity for reflection, connection, and renewal.

Throughout this year, your children have been a credit to you. Their attitude to learning, their respectful behaviour, and their contribution to our school community have been truly commendable. We thank you for your ongoing support in nurturing these values at home.

As we head into the summer break, I wish all our families a restful and joyful holiday. May it be a time of refreshment, shared memories, and renewed energy for the year ahead.

God Bless

Pax et bonum

Mr McCormack,

Headteacher

St Bonaventure Feast Day St Bonaventure Feast Day

Who Is St Bonaventure?

Each year on the 15th of July, the Catholic Church commemorates the Feast Day of St Bonaventure, a revered theologian, philosopher, and Doctor of the Church.

Born in 1221 in Bagnoregio, Italy, St Bonaventure was baptised with the name John. As a young boy, he suffered from a serious illness and later credited his recovery to the miraculous intercession of St Francis of Assisi. After completing his Master’s degree in the arts, he entered the Franciscan Order, where he would go on to serve as Minister General for 17 years, guiding the community with wisdom and humility.

Known as the “Seraphic Doctor” for the depth of his spiritual insight and devotion, St Bonaventure made significant contributions to the Church through his theological writings. He is also recognised as the patron saint of those suffering from bowel disorders.

Our School Celebrations

During this week, students in Years 7–10 participated in Mission Day, a special time dedicated to deepening their understanding of the life of St Bonaventure and the Franciscan tradition. As part of the day, they engaged in Eucharistic Adoration at St Antony’s Church, taking time for quiet reflection and prayer, before coming together to celebrate Mass as a school community.

Year 12 students marked the Feast Day by joining the parish Mass following a mission-focused session led by our chaplains. This time allowed them to reflect on the life and teachings of St Bonaventure.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Planting Trees in Newham

Students and staff from our school teamed up with Thames Chase and volunteers from Newham to plant a range of trees and hedgerows across six different areas around the school.

Our pupils helped unload the trailer and carefully transported trees and equipment through the school to the planting sites, and even pushed wheelbarrows full of trees through the corridors. They worked hard to dig holes, cover roots with soil, and secure the trees with stakes and shelters.

Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge

Congratulations to Abiodun on his fantastic achievement in taking part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge 2025.

Standing up and speaking in front of an audience takes real courage, and his willingness to share his voice is something to be truly proud of. While he may not have placed in the top three, his participation alone is a testament to his confidence, maturity, and leadership.

CAFOD Young Leaders Celebration

Young people from across different deaneries came together to take part in the CAFOD Young Leaders Celebration Day, marking a year of faith-inspired action and achievement. The event was a chance to celebrate the campaigns they had led — from fundraising and awareness drives to justice-based projects rooted in Catholic Social Teaching. Our students shared the impact of their efforts in areas such as climate justice, food security, and global solidarity. It was an inspiring day of collaboration, prayer, and encouragement, reminding everyone present that young people are powerful agents of change within the Church and the wider world.

Rome Pilgrimage

Students had the incredible opportunity to travel to Rome, where they visited significant sites of Catholic heritage such as St Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and the tombs of saints. A particular highlight of the trip was that a group of students were specially chosen to meet Pope Leo XIV in conjunction with TELCO, recognising the outstanding work they had done on Catholic Social Teaching (CST). They proudly presented their advocacy and community work on themes such as housing, the dignity of labour, and fairness. This once-in-a-lifetime moment was a powerful reminder that young people can be active witnesses to faith and justice in the world today. It was a privilege to be a part of the first group from the UK to meet Pope Leo.

Icons Day

Icons Day was a non-uniform fundraising event inspired by the theme “People Who Inspire Us.” Students were encouraged to dress in honour of individuals who represent courage, faith, justice, and leadership — from saints to social reformers, artists to activists. The day raised funds for CAFOD, the Stephen Lawrence Foundation, and the London Ambulance Service, combining creativity with compassion. It was a joyful and meaningful celebration of how role models can shape who we are and what we stand for.

Deanery Transition Day – Chigwell

This event brought together pupils from across the deanery to support Year 6 students preparing for the transition to secondary school. Our student leadership team played a key role, leading and supporting a range of activities designed to build confidence, teamwork, and a sense of welcome. Through games, reflections, and shared prayer, they acted as faith-filled guides, helping younger pupils feel supported, inspired, and excited for the next stage of their journey within the Catholic community.

TELCO Youth Assembly

Our students played an active role in this year’s TELCO Youth Assembly, helping both onstage and behind the scenes. Several students took on responsibilities such as chairing discussions and supporting backstage logistics. They also had the opportunity to engage in dialogue with influential public figures, including Stephen Timms MP, discussing issues affecting young people in London. The experience was empowering and gave them a platform to express their voice on matters of justice and community.

Franciscan Mission Week

Franciscan Mission Week was a highlight of our liturgical calendar. Rooted in the values of St Francis and St Bonaventure, the week focused on peace, service, prayer, and humility. Students took part in acts of kindness, charity outreach, and liturgical reflection. A particularly special moment was the opportunity to spend time in Eucharistic Adoration, followed by the celebration of Holy Mass, giving students a chance to pause and connect with Christ in a deeper, more prayerful way.

A Franciscan friar and chaplain to the New York City Fire Department, Fr. Mychal Judge was known for his deep compassion, ministry to people living with HIV/AIDS, and pastoral care to the LGBTQ+ community, the homeless, and those battling addiction. Saint Francis Prayer For Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
