Hello NRMS Families,

We wrapped up the week with Arts Day! Thanks to our wonderful visual arts teacher, Auburn Hall, the students had an outstanding day. There was an improv group performance, a BMX stunt performer, and a jazz band. Additionally, students interacted with dozens of local artists. Throughout the day, each student participated in three artist workshops. What an outstanding community event.

Parent, guardians, and students in grade 6 and 7 should have received instructions on the course selection process. Please be sure to follow those instructions so that we can complete student schedules for the 2025-2026 school year this spring.

We have just two weeks remaining in the third quarter. Please help support your student by reviewing grades in Aspen and missing assignments so that students are up to date prior to the end of the quarter. Please also check the week-at-a-glance document to help keep students on track.

CELL PHONES AND SMART WATCHES

While most students are complaint with keeping cell phones in their locker, we have two concerning trends. One is that cell phones are still on during the day and students are using the phones at their lockers. Unfortunately, often the reason for the cell phone use is texting or responding to texts from home. Please refrain from texting your child while they are in school. The second trend is that many students are starting to use smart watches as a workaround the cell phone procedure/expectation of "off and away". Starting April 1, we will be adjusting our procedures to include smart watches. During the school day, students have access to all of the technology they need with the Chromebooks. We strongly encourage all parents/guardians to stop buying smart phones and smart watches for any child under 16. This includes all of our middle school students. Flip phones, "dumb" phones, or Light Phones are all possible alternatives to phones that have access to social media.

More and more longitudinal studies are coming out about the harmful impacts cell phone use and access to social media has on everyone, and on adolescents the potential damage is significant. Reading levels, communication skills, anxiety and depression are all impacted by social media and the use of cell phones. Let's get ahead of this as a community and work to educate ourselves and our students about the risks involved with social media use. Please consider restricting access to these devices to very limited hours after school or on weekends. And, please make sure that students do not have access to any technology after bedtime.

Please note that we will be confiscating these devices if they are used in school. If a student is a repeat offender of the cell phone/smart watch expectations, we will require a parent/guardian come to school to pick up these devices. Together we can help students be less distracted and less consumed with likes and social media posts and better able to communicate, study, and play directly with classmates.

Enjoy the weekend.
