OUR MISSION STATEMENT
At Shortreed, we believe school is a place to build relationships, explore interests, take risks, celebrate successes, and grow together. We are committed to supporting the learning, growth, and well-being of every child while fostering curiosity, play, and discovery. We want every student to feel known, valued, and connected, with opportunities to discover their strengths and shine. Above all, we want every student to know: You Belong Here!
Families of Shortreed,
It’s been wonderful to see our students learning, connecting, and enjoying so many great experiences. Below are a few highlights, along with a look at what’s coming up!
A Spooktacular Halloween at Shortreed!
A Spooktacular Halloween at Shortreed! What a fun day at Shortreed! A huge thank you to our wonderful PAC for creating a spooky Halloween experience in the gym for our students. From the graveyard to the pumpkin patch and creepy-crawly corners, the kids had a great time! We finished the day with our much-loved Halloween Costume Parade.
Congratulations to our Pumpkin Carving Contest winners, who each won a free McDonald’s meal! Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make Halloween so much fun. We are so lucky to have such a great school community!
Kindergarten Field Trip to Eagle Acres Farm!
Our Kindergarten students had a wonderful time visiting Eagle Acres Farm! It was a fun-filled day of exploring, discovering and getting up close with farm animals. Experiences like these provide wonderful opportunities for our youngest learners to make connections, ask questions and learn about the world around them. A big thank you to our parent volunteers who joined us and helped make the day so special!
National Indigenous Veterans Day
Students will be learning about and recognizing National Indigenous Veterans Day, in addition to Remembrance Day. This is an important opportunity to acknowledge the contributions and sacrifices of Indigenous Veterans who have served our country.
For many years, Indigenous veterans were not recognized or honoured in the same way as their non-Indigenous peers. Many faced discrimination when they returned home and were denied access to benefits and supports provided to other veterans. Recognizing National Indigenous Veterans Day allows us to honour their service, acknowledge these injustices and ensure their stories are not forgotten.
We encourage families to take a moment on November 8 to recognize and honour the Indigenous veterans who have served and sacrificed for our country.
Communicating With The School
At Shortreed, we value strong, positive relationships between home and school. Open and respectful communication helps us work together to support every child's learning, well-being and success. If you have a question or concern, we encourage you to connect with your child's classroom teacher as a first step. If further support is needed, school administrators are always here to help. We recognize that sometimes conversations can be difficult, but approaching one another with kindness, curiosity and a willingness to listen makes a difference. We are all working toward the same goal: ensuring every child feels safe, supported and successful at school. Read More
A Little Note About Student Photos
We love sharing the many wonderful moments happening at Shortreed! You may notice that we don't always share as many student photos as we'd like. This is because we need to respect family media consent choices and ensure every student's privacy is protected. We want to share the joy, learning and sense of belonging that make Shortreed special, while balancing that with our responsibility to protect every student's privacy. If you'd like to see more photos from class events, please feel free to reach out to your child's classroom teacher.
A reminder to families: Please log in to the MyEdBC Family Portal, review your child's media release/consent information, and complete or update the form by selecting your consent preferences.
Outstanding Dues
A friendly reminder to families to please take a moment to check for any outstanding school fees, including student agendas, and field trip fees. If you have any questions about an outstanding balance, please contact the office. Thank you for taking care of these items and for your continued support!
School Drop Off and Pick Up
A friendly reminder to all families that student safety is our top priority, including during busy drop-off and pick-up times. Please take a moment to review safe driving and parking practices around Shortreed.
Use designated areas: Please use the designated drop-off and pick-up areas and follow all posted signs.
Avoid stopping in unsafe areas: Please do not stop in the middle of the road, block driveways, or park in bus zones, fire lanes or no-stopping areas.
Watch for pedestrians: Drive slowly, be alert and watch carefully for students crossing or walking near vehicles.
Follow staff directions: Please be patient and follow the directions of staff supporting student safety and traffic flow.
We know mornings and afternoons can be busy, and we appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation. A few extra moments of care can make a big difference in keeping our students and families safe.
What would your family's morning routine theme song be?

Information & Reminders
Parent-Teacher Conferences Resource
Not sure what questions to ask your child’s teacher at your parent-teacher conference? The District is sharing this resource to help families plan for their meeting. Families can review this 3-page resource attached for some ideas, questions, and things to consider. Teachers, staff and families work together to ensure student success in our schools.
Parent Consent Forms on MyEDBC Ready for Families
Parent consent forms can now be received on MyEDBC. Families are asked to please log in to the MyEDBC parent portal and complete the process. A set of consent forms will need to be completed for each child attending a Langley school. It is advised to access MyEDBC and complete the parent consent forms using a desktop or laptop as the process requires the full site version (which is not mobile-friendly). For step-by-step instructions, please read here. More information can be found on the District website here.
Absences
We know that illnesses occur and absences can happen. If your child is going to be absent, arriving late, away or leaving early due to an appointment, please notify the school of your child’s absence by doing either of the following:
- E-mail SCEAttendance@sd35.bc.ca or call 604-856-4167 and follow the prompts for the attendance line, and leave a message with information including:
- Student First Name and Last Name
- Grade
- Division
- Length of Absence
- Reason (illness, late, appointment, vacation.
Avoid long absences due to holidays, as this can seriously jeopardize your child’s academic achievement. Homework may not be provided as assignments based on lessons your child missed, as it can be more confusing than helpful. If you will be away for an extended period, please notify the school, as this may impact enrollment.
We STRIVE for FIVE absences or less at Shortreed. We know that children will get sick, but it's important to minimize absences.
