Dear DMS Families,

As we enter the month of May, it is hard to believe that we are already in the final stretch of the school year. This year has gone by incredibly quickly, and I continue to be amazed by the hard work, growth, and perseverance our students have demonstrated throughout the year. From academics to extracurricular activities, our students continue to make us proud each and every day, and I look forward to seeing all they accomplish during these final weeks of school.

This week marked an important milestone for our fifth and eighth grade students as they completed their Science, Technology, and Engineering MCAS testing. We are extremely proud of the focus, determination, and effort students showed throughout the testing process. Thank you as well to our families and staff members for the support and encouragement you continue to provide our students during this busy time of year.

In addition to their academic accomplishments, several of our students represented DMS at the D5 State Track Meet and the Jr. SEMSBA Music Festival this week. These events provided wonderful opportunities for students to showcase their talents, dedication, and school spirit outside of the classroom. Whether competing on the track or performing musically, our students represented Dighton Middle School in such a positive and respectful manner. We congratulate all of the participants and are incredibly proud of their achievements.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support throughout the school year. I hope everyone enjoys a relaxing weekend and has a wonderful week ahead!

Warmly,

Dr. Cheryl Leandro, Principal cleandro@drregional.org

🚍🚍 BUS SAFETY REMINDERS FOR ALL FAMILIES 🚍🚍 🚍🚍 BUS SAFETY REMINDERS FOR ALL FAMILIES 🚍🚍

A reminder for all members of the Dighton-Rehoboth community of the critical importance of stopping for school buses.

This week, a family reported a serious safety concern in which a vehicle illegally passed a stopped school bus while a student was actively boarding. The bus’s red lights were flashing and the stop-arm was extended, and the student was in the stairwell at the time of the incident. Fortunately, no one was injured, but this situation highlights a very real and dangerous risk for our students.

Passing a stopped school bus is not only illegal, it puts children in immediate danger. Students boarding and exiting buses are among the most vulnerable pedestrians on our roadways, and they rely on all drivers to follow the law and exercise caution.

We ask all drivers, parents, guardians, students, and community members, to:

  • Stop completely when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop-arm extended, regardless of direction of travel (unless on a divided highway with a physical median).

  • Be alert in school zones and residential areas, especially during morning and afternoon bus routes.

  • Model safe and responsible driving behavior for our students.

Ensuring the safety of our children is a shared responsibility. We appreciate your partnership in helping keep every student safe on their way to and from school. Thank you for keeping our community safe.

As we plan for the upcoming school year, we want to share information about our Enhanced Math placement process for students entering Grade 7. Our goal is to place each student in a learning environment that supports their current skills while providing the right level of challenge, with Enhanced Math designed for students ready for a faster-paced, more rigorous experience. Placement decisions are based on multiple measures, including classroom performance, teacher recommendations, MCAS, and district benchmarks, and reflect a comprehensive view of each student’s readiness, not a single score. Students in Enhanced Math will engage with grade-level and above-grade-level content with a deeper understanding and accelerated pace, requiring strong study habits, organization, and perseverance. If you have questions or would like to discuss your child’s placement, please reach out, we value our partnership and are committed to shaping every student's success.

Your math teacher will provide you with more information.
