College Bound

Mrs. Thurik’s Dual Credit English 4 class recently took a field trip to San Jacinto College North Campus, where students toured the campus and received their official San Jac IDs. During their visit, they learned about the wide range of academic and career opportunities available after graduation. While they were there, SJC was having a college and transfer fair. Our students were invited to attend and were able to speak to representatives from universities and other colleges around the nation. A special highlight of the day was meeting their tour guide, Minerva (pictured with Mrs. Thurik), an Endeavor graduate from the Class of 2024 who recently completed her cosmetology license—a great example of success beyond high school.

Students enrolled in this dual credit course earn their English 4 credit along with six college credit hours for English 1301 and 1302—all while taking the course right here at Endeavor. They are so grateful to CISD cabinet members for advocating on behalf of EHS students to have the opportunity to offer this course for the first time and are excited to build this program in the future so graduates fly from the Eagle's nest well on their way to having an exceptional college transcript.

Endeavor is committed to meeting the needs of our evolving student population. Many students from Channelview High School and surrounding schools seek alternative education opportunities without sacrificing academic rigor or post-graduation options. Through innovative programs like Dual Credit English 4, Endeavor and CISD continue to support at-risk students in achieving their high school diplomas while also empowering those eager to accelerate their academic journey. With a growing number of incoming freshmen, Endeavor remains dedicated to providing multiple pathways to student success.

Gema Rodriguez is an intern with the Student Conservation Association working with Endeavor High School this year as an Environmental Educator. She is a recent graduate of Texas A&M with a degree in Ecology and Conservation Biology and has a passion for wildlife and environmental work. She hopes to connect students to nature and create opportunities for outdoor, hands-on learning that gets everyone excited about conservation.

Some projects she hopes to work on with students this year include: restoring the pollinator gardens at Endeavor, planting vegetables and trees, coordinating field trips, and inviting guest speakers from different careers to connect with students.

The Student Conservation Association is a nationwide organization that connects youth with nature and serves communities. They have partnered with ForUsTree, a community forestry initiative improving green spaces in Houston.

Thanks to this initiative, free native fruit tree giveaways will be hosted throughout the area, with the first one at Channelview High School on Saturday, October 25th, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Make sure to check back here next week for her Conservation Corner where she will highlight a different topic each week. We are excited to work with Gema this year.

Make sure you pay attention to announcements this week and that you plan on being here Friday, October 31st!

National Principal's Month National Principal's Month

October is National Principals Month, and we are proud to recognize Mr. Mark Sims for the many hats he wears as the leader of Endeavor. Each morning, he sets the tone with a warm fist bump for every student, showing that relationships matter and everyone belongs here.

His commitment to creating a welcoming, nurturing environment ensures that all students are given the opportunity to succeed if they choose to embrace it. Mr. Sims models the core beliefs and practices of an effective principal—fostering trust, celebrating growth, supporting teachers, and encouraging a positive school culture where both students and staff thrive.

As Dr. Hill stated, "at Channelview ISD, our principals are more than school leaders, they are mentors, motivators, and role models who inspire both students and staff. Their dedication and commitment make a lasting difference in our classrooms, campuses, and community." Here at Endeavor, Mr. Sims embodies those traits.

What is the ACT/SAT test?

Both the SAT and the ACT are nationally administered, standardized tests that help schools evaluate your application and see how prepared you are for college courses. The SAT and ACT generally cover the same topics. Both ACT and SAT scores are used for college admissions decisions and awarding merit-based scholarships. Most colleges do not prefer one test over the other. Neither the SAT nor ACT is harder than the other. Different students tend to do better on one test than the other.

Ask Mrs. Jackson or Mrs. Salinas for more information.
