¡Repertorio Contigo! Presents "La Gringa"

MS 50 is excited to welcome ¡Repertorio Contigo! and their presentation of the play "La Gringa" on April 4! The New York Times writes that "La gringa is the story of a young woman from New York who goes to Puerto Rico in search of her extended family. When she finds them, the complicated misperceptions that develop on all sides unfold in comic dialogue that arouses constant shouts of laughter and bursts of applause." This Spanish language play is performed with English supertitles, making it fun for our whole community.

There will be a student performance for our theatre, dual language, and BSE classes at 1:00PM and a FREE performance for our families at 6:00PM. We want to thank our New York City Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez and the Cultural Immigrant Initiative for generously sponsoring this performance! We hope to see you there!

6th Grade - Cells and Body Systems

Through investigations in the Cells and Body Systems Unit, students consider why living things need energy. Students gather evidence to support the concept that all living organisms are made of cells. Students develop and use models to describe the function of a cell as a whole and the ways that parts of cells contribute to the function of the cell, with a focus on how food is broken down through chemical reactions to release energy. The unit focuses on selected parts of cells and how they facilitate collaboration as well as the communication of messages within and between cells. Finally, students explore the concept that all multicellular organisms are complex and organized, as they investigate how the body is a system of interacting subsystems composed of groups of cells.

7th Grade- Chemical Reactions

Through investigations, students learn to identify when a chemical reaction has occurred and model the change in molecular structure of materials showing that the number and type of atoms (mass) are conserved in a reaction. The Science and Engineering Practices of Developing and Using Models and Analyzing and Interpreting Data are used to show how scientists might model reactions and collect data to show changes. The Crosscutting Concepts of Scale, Proportion, and Quantity; Patterns; and Energy and Matter are important themes necessary for students to understand changes in atomic structure.

8th Grade- Body Systems

Humans are complex organisms that maintain a narrow set of internal conditions through a system of feedback and communication mechanisms between multiple organ systems. In this unit, students will explore how body systems interact to effectively monitor and respond to both internal and external environmental changes. Students complete both Making Connections (a New York State required lab) and a human thermoregulation laboratory, both of which focus on skills of experimental design.
