Dear 6th Grade Families,

I hope you had a wonderful fall break, enjoying time with your loved ones and engaging in activities that brought joy and relaxation. I also hope it was an opportunity to recharge and refocus on the things that matter most to you and your family. Personally, I’ve cherished spending time with my three children during this holiday season—time truly flies! My youngest is now in 8th grade, and it’s hard to believe how quickly these years pass. Middle school, especially 6th grade, can be an unique and sometimes challenging time, but it’s also a fleeting and special season of growth. I encourage you to savor each moment with your child.

Important Updates for the Week:

1. Half-Day Schedule on Wednesday
This Wednesday will be a half day for students. Classes will follow an all-even-period schedule, which includes recess. Please plan accordingly for the adjusted school hours which will end at 11:00am.

2. Cold Weather Reminders
As we transition into Chicago’s winter season, it’s important to ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the cold weather. Students spend 40 minutes for lunch and recess—20 minutes eating in the cafeteria and 20 minutes outside on the playground. Please make sure your child has:

  • A warm coat
  • Hat
  • Gloves
  • Scarf
  • Weather-appropriate footwear to keep their feet warm and dry

Proper attire will help your child stay comfortable and healthy during outdoor activities.

3. NWEA Testing Begins Thursday and Friday
Our students will begin their NWEA testing this week, starting with their ELA assessment on Thursday and Friday. To set them up for success, please:

  • Ensure their iPad is fully charged and brought to school.
  • Make sure they get plenty of rest the night before.
  • Encourage them to eat a healthy breakfast. If they prefer to eat at school, they can arrive at the cafeteria by 7:40 AM to have breakfast before classes begin.

Your support in preparing your child for testing is greatly appreciated!

Thank you for all that you do to partner with us in supporting your child’s education. Sixth grade is a pivotal year, and we value your involvement in making it a positive and successful experience for your student.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Warm regards,

Ms. Brunson
