American Heart Association Kick Off 9/30 at 5:30PM
Get ready for the American Heart Association’s American Heart Challenge (AHC), kicking off on September 30th, at 5:30PM in the auditorium of Douglas Middle School.
Please SIGN UP today, under our school, at http://www2.heart.org/goto/douglasmiddle.
By participating in the American Heart Challenge students can raise awareness and funds for congenital heart defects, nutrition security, CPR training, mental well-being, and more as we work to end heart disease and stroke.
Along the way, students will meet some of the kids they’re helping while learning about mind and body health. Once you've signed up, start Finn’s Mission and complete the challenges. As a family, you can help to create a community of lifesavers by learning the lifesaving steps of Hands-Only CPR. It’s quick, easy, and fun!
Thank you for keeping hearts everywhere beating strong!
Why Parent Involvement in Education Matters
Parent involvement in education supports a variety of student outcomes. Family involvement in education is proven to boost academic, attendance, behavioral, and social-emotional outcomes. In short, schools that engage parents for better attendance see clear benefits that carry across its K-12 community.
The research on K-12 attendance is clear: students who miss 10% of the school year or more (about two days per month) are more likely to experience academic setbacks. Further, students who are absent for multiple years between preschool and second grade are less likely to read at grade level by the third grade. In the long run, absenteeism can also make high school students four times less likely to graduate.
With parental engagement, students are more likely to attend class. On its own, better attendance helps students avoid challenges with academics, social-emotional skills, and success in their postsecondary lives. This is why a district’s early attendance efforts are all the more essential.
Here’s a simple fact: students are more likely to succeed when their families engage in their education. When parents and guardians are active in their child’s learning, this leads to greater student success when it comes to schoolwork, attendance, and learning. Having the right tools can make this task simpler and more streamlined for families. This article will discuss how family engagement aids in student success and offer some tips for engagement that can be bolstered by district resources.
"The evidence that parent involvement can make a significant difference in student achievement is beyond question."

Middle School Chromebooks
We are excited to announce an important change for the 2025–2026 school year: Douglas Middle School is moving to a 1:1 Chromebook program!
This means that every student will be assigned their own school-issued Chromebook to use for learning both in school and at home. Below are the key expectations and procedures for all students and families:
Student Responsibilities
Bring the Chromebook home every day and return with it the next school day.
Charge the Chromebook nightly so it is ready for a full day of school use.
Take care of the device as you would a textbook. The Chromebook is school property, and students may be held responsible for intentional damage or misuse.
Loaners & Repairs
If a Chromebook is forgotten at home, students must visit the Technology Office to borrow a loaner for the day.
If a Chromebook is damaged at home, students should bring it to the Technology Office the next day. A loaner will be issued until repairs are complete.
If a Chromebook needs charging during the day, students may borrow a charger from the Technology Office or leave the Chromebook there to charge and use a temporary loaner.
Important Reminder
Students may not borrow or use another student’s or staff member’s Chromebook. They should only use their assigned device or an official loaner.
Chromebook Care & Use Guide
To participate in the program, both parents/guardians and students must sign the Chromebook Care & Use Guide within the first week of school.
If we do not receive a signed copy, the Chromebook will be disabled until the form is submitted.
The guide is available on the public portal for both students and parents. Simply log into the portal and click on "Forms" on the left hand side and then click on "District Chromebook Use Agreement" to sign and submit it.
This new approach encourages responsibility and accountability while preparing students for high school, where the same expectations apply.
If you have any questions, please contact the Technology Office at parentportal@douglasps.net or reach out to the school office.
We look forward to a successful school year with this exciting new initiative!

New Website and Mobile App
We’re thrilled to announce that Douglas Public Schools will be launching a brand-new District website and mobile app this summer!
This new platform will become the central hub for all District communications, helping families stay up to date on school news, events, and announcements. It will feature a live news feed, directly connected to our new Facebook and Instagram accounts, ensuring timely and engaging updates.
To better serve our families and streamline communication, this new system will enable us to send out important messages using:
- SMS (text messaging)
- Phone calls
- Push notifications through the mobile app
No matter how you prefer to receive information—through social media, the website, mobile app, or traditional text and voice messages—you’ll now have a simple, all-in-one solution to stay connected with everything happening across our schools.
We are proud to be partnering with Apptegy and their Thrillshare platform, a trusted leader in school communication technology. Thrillshare is designed specifically for K–12 districts and empowers schools to seamlessly share content across multiple platforms at once, reducing communication gaps and increasing family engagement. With intuitive design and user-friendly navigation, our new system will also make it much easier to find the information that matters most to you.
We strongly encourage everyone to download and use the new mobile app so you stay connected over the summer and are ready for updates in the fall. It will be the easiest way to stay informed and involved in our school community. VIDEO HERE!
Thank you for your continued support as we work to enhance communication and engagement across the district. Further details and marketing materials, including download instructions for the app, will be shared in the coming weeks.
For the 25-26 school year, for a 2nd lunch or a 2nd breakfast will be $3.75.
