Superintendent's message
Celebrating National Principals Month
As October is National Principals Month, and I want to take a moment to recognize the leadership and dedication of our principals here in Newport Public Schools.
Since joining Newport, I have had the opportunity to visit our schools, spend time in classrooms, and see firsthand the important work happening every day. Strong school leadership is essential to creating an environment where teachers can teach, students can learn, and families feel connected to their schools. Our principals set the tone, build relationships, support our educators, and keep student success at the center of their work.
I want to personally thank Robert Young at Rogers High School, Michael Browner at Thompson Middle School, and Traci Westman at Pell Elementary School for their commitment to our students, staff, and families. Their work is critical to moving our schools forward and ensuring that every student has access to meaningful learning opportunities.
As we continue to strengthen Newport Public Schools, I believe that collaboration, strong relationships, high expectations, and a shared commitment to student achievement will be key to our success. Our principals play a central role in making that happen.
Please join me in thanking Robert, Michael, and Traci for their leadership and all they do for our school community.
Great schools depend on great leadership, and I am grateful for the work our principals do each day on behalf of Newport's students.
Dr. Peter Sanchioni
Superintendent
Newport Public Schools
REMINDER:
No School On Election Day, Tuesday, November 3rd
Please note that there will be no school next Tuesday, November 3rd as our buildings will be used as polling locations.
The Seaside Cafe Is Open!
The Seaside Cafe will be open this week for service Wednesday-Friday!
We open for coffee and pastries at 9:30am and have hot food available starting at 10:25am. We have had to move our closing time back to 12:15 so students can get to their classes on time.
This week we are featuring our base menu of sandwiches and salads as well as Minestrone soup and a pasta special. Please do not send email orders for daily lunches.
The Seaside phone number is 401-236-2655.
Thank you for your support and patience as we start a new year here at The Seaside Cafe!
Rogers Writing Students Learn About College Level Academic Research
A required component of Mrs. Rosa's concurrent enrollment course with the University of Rhode Island, Writing 104, is a library research session that is held on-campus. Students have a class with a URI librarian and she walks the students through the academic research process. While on campus, students get to pick up their URI Student ID's and enjoy lunch at one of the campus dining halls. (Thank you RHS PTO for supporting this trip!) The concurrent enrollment course is the same class that first-year students take on campus at URI. Students in Mrs. Rosa's class are earning 3 college credits with the University. The companion class that is offered at Rogers, Introduction to Literature (LIT 110) is taught by Mr. Largy. These students will earn an additional 4 credits next semester. Go Vikings!
Frightening Fun At Pell Trunk Or Treat
Pell students and families had a frighteningly good time at the Pell PTO’s annual Trunk Or Treat last Saturday. Thank you Pell PTO for putting on this spooky fun event every Halloween season!

🔴⚫ VIKING PRIDE ON FULL DISPLAY!
Rogers Girls Tennis & Girls Soccer Battle in the Playoffs!
Two Rogers High School teams remained in the hunt for a divisional playoff title this week, and both demonstrated the determination, heart, and competitive spirit that define Viking Athletics!
🎾GIRLS TENNIS — A HARD-FOUGHT FINISH!
Our Girls Tennis team gave everything they had in a thrilling playoff battle, narrowly falling 4–3 in a match that came down to a sudden-death tiebreaker. Despite competing without several teammates, these young ladies stepped up, battled for every point, and refused to back down. Their season may have ended, but their effort, sportsmanship, and commitment to one another made us incredibly proud. Congratulations on a terrific season!
⚽GIRLS SOCCER — THE HUNT CONTINUES!
Our Girls Soccer team is still on the prowl for a championship! After an exciting 1–0 playoff victory over Central Falls, the Vikings have advanced to the quarterfinals, where they will face No. 1 seed Cranston East on Wednesday, October 28.
The Vikings have not faced Cranston East this season, but they are ready for the challenge! This team has demonstrated resilience, determination, and a belief in one another throughout the season. They are ready to BRING IT!
ONE RISE! ALL RISE!
We are proud of every Rogers athletic team and the dedication our student-athletes bring to their sports. This week, however, we shine the spotlight on Girls Tennis and Girls Soccer for representing Rogers High School with tremendous heart, pride, and determination.
