Administrators

Progress in the general curriculum for students with sensory disabilities and multiple, complex needs can be challenging because these students are forming foundational concepts such as object permanence, tool use, and cause-effect. The Active Learning approach for students with multiple disabilities may be the answer. Texas Sensory Support Network (TxSSN) members are here to help.

About the Active Learning Approach

  • Based in science and backed by Lilli Nielsen's research
  • Integrates easily with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) vertical alignment to support the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Alternate 2 and Texas’ Early Learning Pathways
  • Supports individualized education program (IEP) goals and objectives
  • Utilizes diagnostic teaching methods based on assessment, ongoing observation, and data collection
  • Compliments district-purchased curricula for students with multiple disabilities
  • Increases foundational concept knowledge, fine and gross motor skills, independent exploration, participation, and more for students who function within the birth to 48-month developmental range
  • Based on student preferences to encourage independent, active engagement

We Can Help

TxSSN members are committed to expanding and supporting the implementation of the Active Learning approach for students with multiple disabilities.

Training

Free, online training is available on Active Learning Space. Network members may provide additional training. Formats have included remote and face-to-face make-and-take workshops, introductory workshops, two-day conferences, and more based on identified regional needs.

Coaching

To help effectively implement training components in practice, educators may receive coaching support from TxSSN members. Coaches build strong alliances with educators while engaging in a proven coaching cycle that includes pre-observation, observation/modeling, and performance feedback. One principal wrote of his experience with Active Learning coaching, "What I've noticed from an administrator's perspective is a focused approach to active learning. The three teachers who are working with this program have made discoveries about their students' interest that I'm not sure they would have learned without (the coaching.)" Note that, given the current pandemic, the entire cycle, or parts of the cycle, can be completed remotely if necessary.

Assistive Technology

Teams who receive coaching may have the opportunity to receive financial support for the purchase of assistive technology specific to the Active Learning approach.

Summary

Training and coaching that supports the use of the Active Learning approach for students with multiple disabilities can equip teachers to help the most complex learners develop prerequisite concepts needed to make progress in the general curriculum.
