Wylie ISD Announces 2025 National Merit Commended Students
Wylie ISD is proud to announce and recognize the 20 high school seniors who have been named a National Merit Commended Student in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSP) competition.
Students are entered into the competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which typically occurs in the fall of their junior year. The preliminary test serves as an initial screen of program entrants, and the PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index scores determine the 50,000 high-scoring participants who qualify for program recognition. Of those 50,000 students, approximately 34,000 are named commended students. Learn more about the National Merit Scholarship and find a list of our Commended Students on our website.
Wylie ISD Students Awarded Academic Honors from College Board National Recognition Program
A combined 142 Wylie East High School and Wylie High School students earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs. These National Recognition Programs grant underrepresented students with academic honors that can be included on college and scholarship applications and connect students with universities across the country, helping them meaningfully connect to colleges and stand out during the admissions process. Colleges and scholarship programs identify students awarded National African American, Hispanic, Indigenous and/or Rural/Small Town Recognition through College Board’s Student Search Service. Thrills and Skills at Harrison Intermediate
It was an adrenaline-fueled lesson in sixth-grade science led by Tamesha Booker at Harrison Intermediate. Using toilet paper rolls, water bottles, and construction paper, the students crafted roller coasters inside pizza boxes to illustrate the concepts of potential and kinetic energy.
Each group’s coaster had to successfully guide a marble through the hills, curves and loops they constructed.
Sixth-graders Dyson Simpson and Jackson Stroud worked together to build their roller coaster.
“The hardest part was the water bottle tunnel,” Stroud said.
“The [second] water bottle was an added part,” Simpson said. “[The marble] kept getting stuck so we had to add another water bottle to make it higher.”
The roller coasters were the first big project of the year for this science class.
“The best part of this class is the teacher,” sixth-grader Shereen Lashing said. “She's nice and makes learning fun.”

If you’ve been to a Wylie ISD home football game, you may have seen the UIL’s PSA featuring Governor Greg Abbott and university head football coaches. They’ve teamed up to raise awareness about the serious dangers of fentanyl, a drug that has claimed thousands of lives. Let’s stay informed and protect our communities.
